OTSUKISAMA TO KORO

(The Moon and Koro)

Koro the cricket gets angry or complains whenever things don’t go his way.

Because of that, he’s lost more and more friends — now only Giro still plays with him.

One day, Giro came by.

“Koro, let’s go down to the riverbank! There’s a warm pile of straw. It feels so good to lie on it!”

Koro actually thought, “Maybe I’ll go,” but he couldn’t say it honestly.

“Hmmph. A pile of straw? That sounds boring,” he said with an unhappy face, and turned Giro down.

The next day, Giro came again and taught him a fun song.

But Koro said, “What kind of song is that? It’s not fun at all,” and Giro got upset and went home.

Koro thought, “That was mean of me. I should apologize,” but he just couldn’t bring himself to do it.

Koro started to dislike himself more and more. His face grew gloomy.

At that moment, the moon rose from the eastern sky.

Gently, the moon spoke to Koro.

“Koro, look at your reflection in a drop of morning dew.”

Koro looked into the dew and was shocked.

“Is this really my face…?”

It was a dark, sunken, and sad-looking face.

“Come on, cheer up, and try singing,” said the moon gently.

Koro let out a tiny chirp, “Pipi…”

“Yes, that’s a lovely sound. Now, put a smile on your face and sing with joy.”

Koro felt shy, but he tried singing to the moon.

“Pipipi, lilili, korokorokoro, kororo…”

“Yes! That was a bright and honest voice. Always try to keep that feeling in your heart.”

Koro’s heart began to feel light and cheerful.

“Tomorrow, I’ll apologize to Giro. And then I’ll play nicely with everyone.”

Koro made up his mind.

The end
