ピノキオ Pinocchio
木ぼりの 名人の ゼペットじいさんが あやつり人ぎょうを つくって います。
A skilled woodcarver named Geppetto was making a puppet.
手と 足を つけ、かおに 口を かくと、なんと 人ぎょうが しゃべり出したのです。
After attaching the arms and legs, and drawing a mouth on its face, the puppet suddenly began to talk.
「あっかんべー！」
"Bleh!"
それでも 子どもの いない ゼペットじいさんは うれしくて たまりません。
Despite this, Geppetto, who had no children, was overjoyed.
『ピノキオ』と 名まえを つけました。
He named the puppet "Pinocchio."
「おまえは、きょうから わしの むすこだ。 いい 子に なるんだよ。」
"From today, you are my son. Be a good boy."
でも、いたずらっ子の ピノキオは すぐに おもてに とび出しました。
However, mischievous Pinocchio immediately ran outside.
「まちなさい、ピノキオ！」
"Wait, Pinocchio!"
ピノキオは 町かどで おまわりさんに ドシン！
Pinocchio bumped into a police officer at the street corner!
やっと ゼペットじいさんが おいつきます。
Geppetto finally caught up.
「さあ、いえに かえろう。」
"Let's go home."
「いやだい！」
"No way!"
ピノキオは 足を バタバタ させて うごきません。
Pinocchio kicked and refused to move.
おまわりさんは ピノキオを いじめて いると かんちがいして、ゼペットじいさんを ろうやへ つれていって しまいました。
The police officer, misunderstanding that Geppetto was bullying Pinocchio, took Geppetto to jail.
こっそり いえに かえった ピノキオに、コオロギが いいました。
Back home, Pinocchio was met by a cricket.
「いう ことを きかない 子は、立ぱな 人に なれないよ。」
"A child who doesn't listen can't become a respectable person."
ピノキオは おこって コオロギを けとばしました。
Pinocchio got angry and kicked the cricket.
まどの すきまから、つめたい かぜが ふきこんで きます。
Cold wind blew in through the window crack.
ピノキオは 火ばちに 足を のせ、ねむって しまいました。
Pinocchio put his feet on the brazier and fell asleep.
ジリジリ...。足が やけて います。
Sizzle... His feet were burning.
やがて、ゼペットじいさんが かえって きました。
Soon, Geppetto returned home.
立ち 上がった ピノキオは すってんころり。
When Pinocchio stood up, he stumbled.
「わあん！ 足を つくって！ おなかも ぺこぺこだよう！」
"Waah! Make me new feet! I'm starving too!"
「よしよし」

ピノキオは ゼペットじいさんの ぶんまで パンを たべて しまいました。

足を つくって もらった ピノキオは げん気いっぱいです。

「あしたから 学校へ いくんだよ。」
"From tomorrow, you're going to school."
やさしい ゼペットじいさんは、一ちゃくしか ない 上ぎを うって、ABCの 本を かって きました。
Kind Geppetto sold his only coat to buy an ABC book for Pinocchio.
つぎの日、学校の ちかくまで くると、ゆかいな 音がくが きこえて きました。
The next day, near the school, Pinocchio heard cheerful music.
あやつり人ぎょうの げきが はじまるのです。
A puppet show was about to start.
ピノキオは きっぷが ほしくて、ABCの 本を うって しまいました。
Pinocchio wanted a ticket so badly that he sold his ABC book.
ピノキオを 見て、ぶたいの 人ぎょうたちは 大よろこび。
Seeing Pinocchio, the stage puppets were thrilled.
ピノキオも おどり出します。
Pinocchio also started dancing.
げきは めちゃくちゃです。
The show became a mess.
おやかたは おこって、ピノキオを つかまえました。
The puppet master, angry, captured Pinocchio.
こわい かおを した おやかたは、本とうは やさしい 人でした。
The puppet master, with a scary face, was actually kind.
ピノキオから、ゼペットじいさんが 本を かう ために 上ぎを うったと きいて、かんしんして います。
When he heard that Geppetto had sold his coat to buy the book, he was impressed.
「なんて 立ぱな 人だろう。」
"What a great man."
「これを おとうさんに あげなさい。」
"Give this to your father."
おやかたは ピノキオに 金かを 五まい くれました。
The puppet master gave Pinocchio five gold coins.
いえに むかう みちばたに、あの コオロギが いました。
On his way home, Pinocchio encountered the cricket again.
「うそつきに 気を つけるんだよ。」
"Beware of liars."
「あっちへ いけ。 うるさいぞ。」
"Go away. You're annoying."
でも コオロギが いった とおり、きつねと ねこが ピノキオを だまそうと まちぶせして いたのです。
But as the cricket said, a fox and a cat were lying in wait to deceive Pinocchio
「金かを 土に うめて、ひるねを して いれば、金かの 木に なるよ。」
"Bury the gold coins in the ground, take a nap, and they'll grow into a money tree."
「わあ！ 金かを うめるよ！」
"Wow! I'll plant the coins!"
ピノキオが 目を さますと、金かは きつねと ねこに ぬすまれた あとでした。
When Pinocchio woke up, the fox and the cat had stolen the gold coins.
ないて いる ピノキオのまえに 天女さまが あらわれました。
While Pinocchio was crying, a fairy appeared.
「本を かう お金を とられたの。」
"I lost the money for buying the book."
ピノキオは うそを つきました。
Pinocchio lied.
すると、ピノキオの はなが どんどん どんどん のびて いきます。
Then, Pinocchio's nose grew longer and longer.
「うそを つくなんて わるい 子ね。」
"It's bad to lie."
「ごめんなさい。 もう つきません。」
"I'm sorry. I won't lie anymore."
天女さまが きつつきに けずらせて、やっと はなは もとどおり。
The fairy had woodpeckers trim Pinocchio's nose back to normal.
みちに まよった ピノキオは、はたらきものの くにへ つきました。
Lost on the road, Pinocchio arrived in the Land of Hard Work.
おなかは ぺこぺこ。
とおりかかった 女の人に たべものを ねだりました。
Hungry, he begged a passing woman for food.
「お花に 水を やって くれたら、ケーキを あげましょう。」
"I'll give you cake if you water the flowers."
「いやだよ。 水に ぬれるもの。」
"No way. I don't want to get wet."
「それなら、はらぺこの ままで いなさい。」
"Then stay hungry."
ピノキオは いやいや 水を やりました。
Reluctantly, Pinocchio watered the flowers.
でも、その あとの ケーキの おいしかった こと！
But the cake afterward was delicious!
水を もらって、花も うれしそうです。
The flowers seemed happy with the water.
「これからは いい 子に なろう！」
"From now on, I'll be a good boy!"
げん気に あるいて いくと、ひろばに あそびの くにへ いく ば車が とまって います。
As he walked energetically, he saw a carriage bound for the Land of Play.
ピノキオは 子どもたちと いっしょに、ば車に のって しまいました。
Pinocchio boarded the carriage with other children.
あそびの くにでは、だれも しかったり しません。
In the Land of Play, no one scolded anyone.
ピノキオは おかしを たべて、あそんで ばかり。
Pinocchio ate sweets and played all the time.
ある日、かがみを 見て びっくり。
One day, looking in the mirror, he was shocked.
ロバの 耳が はえて いたのです。
He had grown donkey ears.
ほかの 子も みんな ロバに なって いました。
All the children had turned into donkeys.
ロバに なった ピノキオは サーカスで はたらかされました。
As a donkey, Pinocchio was made to work at a circus.
でも、玉のりに しっぱいして、うみに すてられて しまったのです。
But after failing a balancing act, he was thrown into the sea.
ロバの かわが はがれた とき、大きな サメが ピノキオを ばくり！
When the donkey skin peeled off, a giant shark swallowed Pinocchio!
サメの おながの 中で ピノキオが めぐりあったのは、なつかしい ゼペットじいさんでした。
Inside the shark's belly, Pinocchio met the familiar Geppetto.
ゼペットじいさんは ピノキオを さがしに 出かけ、うみで サメに のまれて しまったのです。
Geppetto had gone to look for Pinocchio and was swallowed by the shark at sea.
「おとうさん！ ごめんなさい。」
"Father! I'm sorry."
二人は サメが あくびを した すきに にげ出しました。
They escaped when the shark yawned.
いえに かえった ピノキオは、まい日 はたらいて、ゼペットじいさんを たすけました。
Back home, Pinocchio worked every day to help Geppetto.
ふと 気がつくと、天女さまが ほほえんで います。
Suddenly, the fairy appeared, smiling.
「ピノキオ。いい 子に なった ごほうびを あげましょう。」
"Pinocchio, here's a reward for becoming a good boy."
ピノキオは 本ものの 人げんの 子どもに なったのです。
Pinocchio turned into a real human boy.
ピノキオと おとうさんの ゼペットじいさんは、しっかりと だきあいました。
Pinocchio and his father Geppetto hugged tightly.
