(The Mystery of the Pyramid)
くうこうには、ダイコンけぶが むかえに きてくれる やくそくだった。
It was promised that Daikon officer would come to pick them up at the airport.
けれど、三十分 まっても、一時間 まっても、ダイコンけいぶは あらわれなかった。
However, even after waiting for 30 minutes, then an hour, Daikon office did not appear.
「しつれいしちゃうわ。やくそくを まもらない 男の人なんて、大きらい！」トマトちゃんが ぷんぷん おこった。
"This is so rude! I hate men who don't keep their promises!" said Tomato-chan, fuming with anger.
「やくそく、わすれちゃったのかなあ」じゃがバタくんは、こころぼそ そうだ。
"Maybe he forgot about the promise," said Jagabata-kun, looking a bit uneasy.
「なにか きゅうな ようじが できたのかも しれない。
"Something urgent might have come up.
とにかく ホテルまで いって、ダイコンくんから れんらくが くるのを まとう」キャベたまたんていが、いった。
Anyway, let's head to the hotel and wait for Daikon to contact us," suggested Detective Cabbage.
ここは エジプトの くうこう。
This was an airport in Egypt.
三人は ダイコンけいぶに あうために、ひこうきを のりついで、やってきたのだ。
The three of them had flown in, taking multiple flights, to meet Daikon officer.
三人は、タクシーに のって ホテルに むかった。
They got into a taxi and headed for the hotel.
ダイコンけいぶが やってきたのは、ホテルに ついて 一時間も たってからだった。
Daikon Inspector finally arrived an hour after they had reached the hotel.
エジプトの ふくを きた 男と いっしょ だった。
He was accompanied by a man dressed in traditional Egyptian clothing.
「すまん、すまん。きゅうに エジプト けいさつの かいぎに よびだされて しまってね」ダイコンけいぶは あせを ふきふき、あやまった。
“Sorry, sorry. I was suddenly called to an emergency meeting with the Egyptian police,” Daikon officer said, wiping the sweat from his forehead as he apologized.
「じつは、アルセーヌ・セロリが おうごんの マスクを ねらって いるのが わかったんだ」
“The truth is, we’ve learned that Arsène Celery is targeting the golden mask.”
その ひとことで、それまで そっぽを むいていた 三人が さっと ふりかえった。
With that single statement, the three who had been sulking turned around immediately.
「くわしく きかせて くれたまえ」キャベたまたんていの 顔が ひきしまった。
“Tell us more,” said Detective Cabbage, his expression becoming serious.
ちょうど 二週間まえ、ツタン・アカーメン王の ピラミッドで、王の ミイラが はっけんされた。
Just two weeks ago, the mummy of King Tutankhamun had been discovered in his pyramid.
ダイコンけいぶは、おなじころ ひらかれた 世界けいさつかいぎに しゅっせきすることに なったので、エジプトを おとずれて いたのだった。
Daikon officer had been in Egypt at the same time, attending an international police conference that was being held.
ところで、ツタン・アカーメン王の ミイラには、おうごんの マスクが かぶせられて いた。
By the way, the mummy of King Tutankhamun was covered with a golden mask.
ひとめ見て その すばらしさに おどろいた ダイコンけいぶは キャベたまたんてい たちにも 見せて やりたいと おもって、エジプトに くるように さそったのだ。
Upon seeing it for the first time, Daikon officer was so amazed by its beauty that he invited Detective Cabbage and the others to Egypt to see it for themselves.
その おうごんの マスクを、アルセーヌ・セロリが ねらっている という。
Now, it was revealed that Arsène Celery was targeting that very golden mask.
アルセーヌ・セロリは ほうせきや びじゅつひんを ねらう ゆうめいな どろぼうで、へんそうの 名人だ。
Arsène Celery was a famous thief known for stealing jewels and art, and he was a master of disguise.
ねらったものを ぬすむときには、いついつ いくからと、よこく する。
When he plans to steal something, he always sends a notice in advance, saying exactly when he will do it.
「けさ、セロリから よこくじょうが エジプト けいさつに とどいた。
“This morning, the Egyptian police received a notice from Celery,” Daikon officer said.
五月十五日に、ツタン・アカーメン王の おうごんの マスクを もらいに いく と、かいて あった。
“It said that on May 15th, he would come to take King Tutankhamun’s golden mask.
それで、ぼくも たいさく かいぎに よばれた わけさ」ダイコンけいぶが いった。
That’s why I was called to the emergency meeting,” he explained.
「エジプト けいさつでは、だれも はいれないように、十五日まで ピラミッドの 入口を しめることに した。ざんねんだが、それまで きみたちも おうごんの マスクを 見られないことに なった」
"The Egyptian police have decided to close off the entrance to the pyramid until the 15th to ensure no one can get in. Unfortunately, that means you won’t be able to see the golden mask until then," said Daikon officer.
「そんなあ」
“What? No way!”
「ひどいよ。せっかく きたのに」トマトちゃんと じゃがバタくんが、ほっぺたを ふくらませた。
“That’s terrible. We came all this way,” Tomato-chan and Jagabata-kun pouted, their cheeks puffing up with frustration.
「その かわりと いっちゃあ なんだが、いい人を しょうかい しよう。きみ」
"But instead, let me introduce you to someone special,"
ダイコンけいぶは、ドアの そばに ひかえていた エジプトふくの 男を 手まねきした。
Daikon officer continued, gesturing towards a man dressed in Egyptian clothing who had been waiting by the door.
「ガイドの アブドラ・ブロッコリーくんだ。かれが、十五日まで、きみたちを すてきな ところに あんないしてくれる」
“This is Abdullah Broccoli, your guide. He’ll show you some amazing places until the 15th.”
「エジプトの かんこうは、わたくしに おまかせください」
“Leave the sightseeing in Egypt to me,”
ブロッコリーは、にこやかに わらいながら、手を さしだした。
Broccoli said with a friendly smile, extending his hand.
「よろしく たのみます」キャベたまたんていが、その手を にぎった。
"Yes, please," said Cabbage Detective, shaking Broccoli’s hand.
ブロッコリーの 右の 手首の ところには、ほくろが 三つ、ぎょうぎよく ならんでいた。
On Broccoli's right wrist, three neatly aligned moles stood out.
それから、一週間、キャベたまたんていたちは、ブロッコリーの あんないで、いろいろなところを けんぶつして まわった。
For the next week, Cabbage Detective and the others explored various sights around Egypt under Broccoli's guidance.
そのあいだ、ダイコンけいぶは、エジプト けいさつと きょうりょくして、ツタン・アカーメン王の ピラミッドの けいかいに あたった。
Meanwhile, Daikon Inspector collaborated with the Egyptian police to guard the Pyramid of Tutankhamun.
そして、アルセーヌ・セロリが よこくした 五月十五日が やってきた。
Finally, the day Arsène Celery had foretold—May 15th—arrived.
その日は みんな 朝から きんちょうしていたが、どうしたことか、十六日の 朝に なっても セロリは やって こなかった。
Everyone was tense from the early morning, but as the morning of the 16th rolled around, Celery still hadn’t appeared.
どうやら、よこくじょうは、だれかの いたずら だったらしい。
It seemed the warning letter had been nothing more than a prank.
けれど エジプト けいさつは、ねんの ために、あと一週間 ピラミッドを 立ち入り きんしに すると いう。
However, the Egyptian police decided to close off the entrance to the pyramid for another week, just to be safe.
「しごとが まっている。そろそろ かえらないと。おうごんの マスクは あきらめよう」キャベたまたんていが いった。
"I have work waiting for me. We should head back soon. Let’s give up on seeing the golden mask," said Cabbage Detective.
「ちぇっ、つまんないの」
"Ugh, what a disappointment,"
「これじゃあ、なんのために エジプトに きたか、わからないわ」じゃがバタくんと トマトちゃんは、がっかり してしまった。
"We came all the way to Egypt for nothing!" sighed Tomato-chan and added Jaga-Butter, looking equally dejected.
「そんなに おうごんの マスクが 見たければ、見させて あげますよ」ブロッコリーが いった。
"If you’re so eager to see the golden mask, I can show it to you," Broccoli said.
みんな、おどろいて ブロッコリーを 見た。
Everyone turned to Broccoli in surprise.
「あの ピラミッドの なかに はいれる ひみつの つうろが あるんですよ」ブロッコリーは、にやりと わらって、ウインクを して みせた。
"There’s a secret passage inside that pyramid," Broccoli revealed with a sly smile and a wink.
「わたしだけが しってるんです。ただし、けいさつに しられると まずいので、だれにも しゃべらないと やくそく して ください」
"I’m the only one who knows. However, it would be bad if the police found out, so please promise not to tell anyone."
「する、する、やくそくするわ！」
"I promise, I promise!"
「ぼくも。ねえ、先生、いいでしょう？」
"Me too! Hey, Detective, is it okay?"
「そうだなあ」
"Hmm..."
キャベたまたんていは かんがえた。
Detective Cabbage thought for a moment.
けいさつに ないしょと いうのが 気になったが、おうごんの マスクを 見ないで かえるのも ざんねんだった。
He was concerned about keeping it a secret from the police, but he also felt it would be a shame to leave without seeing the golden mask.
「よし、きめた。ブロッコリーさん、ひみつの つうろに あんない してください！」
"Alright, I've decided. Mr. Broccoli, please show us the secret passage!"
というわけで、その夜の 八時すぎ、ブロッコリーが 車で ホテルに むかえにきた。
And so, a little after 8 PM that night, Broccoli came to the hotel in a car to pick them up.
三人は、いそいそと 車に のりこんだ。
The three of them eagerly got into the car.
車の まどには、そとが 見えない ように、しょうめんを のぞいて 黒い 紙が べったりと はって あった。
The windows, except for the front, were completely covered with black paper so they couldn’t see outside.
「これで 目かくしを してください」
"Please put on these blindfolds."
そういって、ブロッコリーは、三人に アイマスクを わたした。
With that, Broccoli handed blindfolds to the three of them.
「もし けいさつに きかれるような ことに なっても、どこを どういったか わからなければ、こたえようが ありません からね」
"If the police happen to question you, you won't be able to tell them where we went if you don't know the way."
ブロッコリーは、ひどく ようじん ぶかかった。
Broccoli was being extremely cautious.
三人が アイマスクを するのを たしかめて、車を はっしゃ させた。
After making sure that all three had put on their blindfolds, he started the car.
それから 一時間ばかり はしって、車が とまった。
They drove for about an hour before the car came to a stop.
「おまちどおさま。つきましたよ」ブロッコリーが いった。
"Thank you for waiting. We've arrived," said Broccoli.
三人は、アイマスクを はずして、車から おりた。
The three of them removed their blindfolds and got out of the car.
そこは、くずれた しんでんの あとだった。
They found themselves at the ruins of a collapsed temple.
百メートル ぐらい 先に、ピラミッドの 黒い かげが そびえている。
About 100 meters ahead, the dark silhouette of a pyramid loomed.
「ここから はいります」ブロッコリーが、レンガづくりの 門を ゆびさした。
"We'll enter from here," Broccoli said, pointing at a brick gate.
門の うちがわに、下に おりる 石だんが あった。
Inside the gate, there was a stone staircase that led downward.
ブロッコリーは、かいちゅうでんとうを つけると、せんとうに たって あるきだした。
Turning on his flashlight, Broccoli took the lead and began walking.
石だんを おりると、頭が つかえそうな ほそい つうろが あった。
As they descended the stone steps, a narrow passage that seemed just tall enough to bump their heads appeared.
「頭に 気を つけてください」ブロッコリーが ちゅうい した。
"Watch your heads," Broccoli warned.
三人は、かめのこ のように 首を ちぢめ、へっぴりごしに なって すすんだ。
The three of them tucked their heads like turtles and crouched awkwardly as they moved forward.
しばらく いくと、つうろは きゅうな くだりざかに なった。
After a while, the passage turned into a steep slope.
「あわわわわっ」じゃがバタくんが ころがりそうに なった。
"Whoa, whoa, whoa!" Jagabata-kun nearly lost his balance and stumbled.
「ちょっと、気を つけて」トマトちゃんが、とがった 声を だした。
"Be careful!" Tomato-chan snapped in a sharp voice.
くだりざかは、かなり ながく つづいた。
The steep slope seemed to go on for quite a while.
と、ふいに ブロッコリーが たちどまった。
Suddenly, Broccoli stopped.
「つきましたよ」声と いっしょに、かいちゅうでんとうの 光が、あたりを てらしだした。
"We’ve arrived," he said, and at the same time, the beam of his flashlight illuminated the surroundings.
そこは、四角い 大きな へやだった。
They were now in a large, square room.
かべや てんじょうには、びっしりと どうぶつの 絵や 文字の ようなものが かきこまれている。
The walls and ceiling were covered with drawings of animals and what appeared to be writing.
「ここは、ツタン・アカーメン王の ピラミッドの なかに ある ＜王のへや＞です」ブロッコリーが いった。
"This is the 'King's Chamber' inside Tutankhamun’s pyramid," Broccoli said.
かいちゅうでんとうの 光の なかに、へやの まんなかに おいてある 大きな 石の はこが うかびあがった。
In the beam of his flashlight, a large stone box in the center of the room emerged from the shadows.
「これは アカーメン王の ミイラを おさめた 石の ひつぎです」
"This is the stone coffin that holds the mummy of King Tutankhamun."
「じゃあ、おうごんの マスクは、この なかに あるのね！」トマトちゃんを せんとうに、三人は 石の ひつぎに かけよった。
"So, the golden mask is inside here!" Tomato-chan, leading the way, rushed towards the stone coffin, followed closely by the others.
そのとたん、
But then, suddenly—
「な、なんだ、これは？」ブロッコリーが さけんだ。
"W-what is this?" Broccoli shouted.
ゆれうごく かいちゅうでんとうの 光が、石の ひつぎの ふたに はりつけられた 紙きれを てらしだした。
The trembling light of the flashlight illuminated a piece of paper stuck to the lid of the stone coffin.
そこには、こんなことが かかれて あった。
Written on it were the following words:
おうごんの マスクは いただいた。けいさつの みなさん、ごくろうさん。アルセーヌ・セロリ
"I've taken the golden mask. Good job, police. —Arsène Celery"
「うーむ」キャベたまたんていは うなった。
"Hmm..." Detective Cabbage groaned.
どうやったのかは わからないが、アルセーヌ・セロリは、けいさつを だしぬいて よこくどおり、おうごんの マスクを ぬすみだして いたんだ。
No one knew exactly how he did it, but Arsène Celery had managed to outsmart the police and, just as he had warned, stolen the golden mask.
「とにかく、このことを エジプト けいさつに しらせなくては ならん。すぐに もどろう」
"Anyway, we need to inform the Egyptian police about this immediately. Let’s head back,"
キャベたまたんていは、紙きれを ひきはがすと、みんなを うながして ＜王のへや＞を でた。
Detective Cabbage said, peeling off the note and urging everyone to leave the King's Chamber.
ひみつの つうろを ぬけ、そとに でると、車に のって ブロッコリーに エジプト けいさつへ いそがせた。
They made their way through the secret passage and once outside, they got into the car and told Broccoli to hurry to the Egyptian police station.
ブロッコリーは、エジプト けいさつの まえで 三人を おろすと、
When they arrived at the police station, Broccoli dropped the three off and said,
「わたしは ここで しつれいします。ひみつの つうろの ことで、けいさつに いろいろ きかれると やっかいですからね。」
"I'll take my leave here. It would be troublesome if the police started asking questions about the secret passage."
そういって、そのまま 車で はしりさった。
With that, he sped off in the car.
三人は エジプト けいさつに かけこんだ。
The three of them rushed into the Egyptian police station.
「どうしたんだい、きみたち」
ダイコンけいぶが、エジプト けいさつの ハッサン・モロヘイヤしょちょうと いっしょに でてきた。
"What's going on with you all?" asked Daikon office as he emerged alongside Egyptian Police Chief Hassan Molokheiya.
ダイコンけいぶは、エジプト けいさつに とまりこんでいたのだ。
Daikon officer had been staying at the Egyptian police station.
「これを 見てみたまえ」キャベたまたんていが、アルセーヌ・セロリの はり紙を 見せると、ふたりは さっと 顔色を かえた。
"Take a look at this," Detective Cabbage said, showing them Arsène Celery's note. Both men's faces turned pale in an instant.
「とにかく、ピラミッドに いって、たしかめよう。あなたがたも きてください」モロヘイヤしょちょうが、キャベたまたんていたちを ふりかえって、いった。
"In any case, let's head to the pyramid and confirm what happened. You all should come with us," said Chief Molokheiya, turning to Detective Cabbage and the others.
いちどうは、二台の パトカーで ツタン・カーメン王の ピラミッドに むかった。
The group, now joined by Daikon and Molokheiya, headed toward King Tutankhamun's pyramid in two police cars.
ピラミッドには、三十分ごに ついた。
They arrived at the pyramid in about 30 minutes.
みんなが パトカーから おりたところへ、一台の ジープが すなけむりを あげながら やってきた。
As everyone was getting out of the police cars, a jeep appeared, kicking up a cloud of sand as it sped toward them.
うんてんしていたのは、白い ヘルメットを かぶった 男だった。
The man driving the jeep was wearing a white helmet.
「あれは、ツタン・アカーメン王の ミイラを はっけんした エジプト大学の モハメッド・カリフラワーきょうじゅだ！」モロヘイヤしょちょうが、ジープに かけよった。
"That's Professor Mohammed Cauliflower from Egypt University, the one who discovered King Tutankhamun's mummy!" exclaimed Chief Molokheiya as he rushed toward the jeep.
「きょうじゅ、どうして ここへ？」
"Professor, what brings you here?"
「なんだか いやな よかんが してねえ。それで、おうごんの マスクを たしかめに きたんだよ」
"I had a bad feeling, so I came to check on the golden mask," replied the professor.
「そうでしたか。いや、じつはー」
"I see. Well, actually..."
モロヘイヤしょちょうが、セロリの はり紙の ことを はなすと、きょうじゅは、「やっぱり」と、まゆを くもらせた。
Chief Molokheiya explained the situation about the note left by Arsène Celery. Upon hearing it, the professor furrowed his brows and said, "I thought so."
カリフラワーきょうじゅを くわえた いっこうは、ピラミッドの すそに ひらいた あなから、なかに はいっていった。
Now joined by Professor Cauliflower, the group entered the pyramid through an opening at the base.
頭が つかえそうな ほそい つうろを しばらく くだって いったところで、キャベたまたんていが ずるっと 足を すべらせ、りょう手を まえに ついた。
As they descended the narrow passage, low enough that their heads nearly touched the ceiling, Detective Cabbage suddenly slipped, catching himself by planting his hands forward.
つうろが きゅうに のぼりざかに なったためだ。
The passage suddenly became a steep incline.
「ん？」
"Hmm?"
キャベたまたんていは、ちょっと 首を かしげたが、すぐに たちあがって、また あるきだした。
Detective Cabbage tilted his head in slight confusion but quickly stood up and continued walking.
のぼりざかは しばらく つづき、やがて まわりが ひらけて、＜王のへや＞に でた。
The uphill path went on for a while before it opened up into the King's Chamber.
みんなは、石の ひつぎの まわりに あつまった。
Everyone gathered around the stone sarcophagus.
「ふたを あけて、しらべてみましょう」モロヘイヤしょちょうが いった。
"Let’s open the lid and investigate," said Chief Molokheiya.
石の ひつぎの ふたは かなり おもたかったが、みんなで もちあげて、なんとか あけることが できた。
The lid of the stone sarcophagus was quite heavy, but with everyone's combined efforts, they managed to lift it off.
なかには、きれいな もようが かきこまれた 人の かたちをした ひつぎが はいっていた。
Inside, there was a human-shaped coffin adorned with intricate patterns.
カリフラワーきょうじゅが、モロヘイヤしょちょうに てつだわせて、ふたを あけた。
Professor Cauliflower, with Chief Molokheiya’s help, began opening the lid of the inner coffin.
そのとたん、金色の 光が ひつぎから ほとばしりでた。
At that moment, a golden light burst forth from the sarcophagus.
ツタン・アカーメン王の ミイラに かせてある おうごんの マスクが、かいちゅうでんとうの あかりに はんしゃしたのだ。
The golden mask placed over the mummy of King Tutankhamun reflected the beam of their flashlights.
キャベたまたんていも トマトちゃんも じゃがバタくんも、その あまりの うつくしさに、ことばも なく、うっとりと みつめる ばかり。
Detective Cabbage, Tomato-chan, and Butter Potato-kun were left speechless, utterly captivated by the beauty of the mask.
「どうやら、あの はり紙は、いたずら だった ようですな」モロヘイヤしょちょうが、ほっとしたように、いった。
"It seems that the note was just a prank after all," said Chief Molokheiya, sounding relieved.
「いや、あんしんは できない」カリフラワーきょうじゅが、首を ふった。
"No, we cannot be sure just yet," Professor Cauliflower said, shaking his head.
「アルセーヌ・セロリは、ねあての ものを ぬすんだと、けいさつの そうさを おくらせるために、ほんもの そっくりの にせものを おいていくことが ある。この マスクも、にせもの かもしれない。もちかえって、大学の けんきゅうしつで よく しらべなくては」
"Arsène Celery has been known to leave behind perfect replicas to make the police think he failed, causing delays in the investigation. This mask could be a fake as well. We must take it back to the university lab for a thorough examination."
きょうじゅは、ひょいっと うでを のばすと、おうごんの マスクを とりあげ、りょう手で かかえるようにして、＜王のへや＞を でていった。
The professor swiftly reached out, lifted the golden mask, cradled it carefully in his arms, and exited the King's Chamber.
みんなは あわてて その あとを おった。
Everyone hurried after him in a rush.
そとに でると、キャベたまたんていが、きゅうに 足を とめた。
Once outside, Detective Cabbage suddenly stopped in his tracks.
「おかしいなあ。なんだか おかしい。でも、なにが おかしいんだか、わからない.....」と、いま でてきたばかりの ピラミッドを ふりかえりながら、しきりに 首を ひねっている。
"Something feels odd. Really odd. But I can't put my finger on what exactly it is..." he muttered, constantly turning his head to look back at the pyramid they had just emerged from, furrowing his brow.
「おかしいって いえば、わたしも おかしいなって おもってる ことが あるんですけど」トマトちゃんが いった。
"Now that you mention it, there's something I thought was strange too," Tomato-chan said.
「ほら、わたしたちが さいしょに ひみつの つうろから ピラミッドに はいったとき、つうろは とちゅうから くだりざかに なったじゃないですか」
"Remember when we first entered the pyramid through the secret passage? The passage started sloping downward after a certain point, didn’t it?"
「うん。ぼくが ころがりそうに なったんだ」じゃがバタくんが うなずいた。
"Yeah, and I nearly rolled down it," Butter Potato-kun nodded in agreement.
「でも、さっきは、先生が すべって ころびそうに なったところから、のぼりざかに なったわ。そして そのまま ＜王のへや＞に でた。
"But just now, from the spot where the detective slipped, the passage started going *uphill* instead. And right after that, we entered the King's Chamber," Tomato-chan pointed out.
ということは、＜王のへや＞は 地下じゃなくて、ピラミッドの なかに あるって ことだわ。これって、おかしく ありませんか、先生」
“That means the ‘King’s Chamber’ isn’t underground, but inside the pyramid. Doesn’t that seem strange, Detective?”
「それだ！ わかった、わかった！」
“That’s it! I’ve got it, I’ve got it!”
キャベたまたんていが、大声で さけんだ。
Detective Cabbage shouted loudly.
「なにが わかったんだい？」ダイコンけいぶが きいた。
“What did you figure out?” Officer Daikon asked.
「いま、せつめいするよ。でも、その まえに、きょうじゅと あくしゅ しなくっちゃ」
“I’ll explain now. But first, I have to shake hands with the professor.”
キャベたまたんていは そういって、カリフラワーきょうじゅに 右手を さしだした。
Saying that, Detective Cabbage extended his right hand toward Professor Cauliflower.
「あ、いや、どうも」
“Ah, um, thank you.”
きょうじゅは、へんな 顔を しながら、右手で キャベたまたんていの 手を にぎった。
The professor, with a puzzled expression, shook Detective Cabbage's hand with his right hand.
キャベたまたんていの 目が、きらりと ひかった。
Detective Cabbage’s eyes gleamed.
「ところで、モロヘイヤしょちょう。このちかくに、もうひとつ ピラミッドが ありませんか」
“By the way, Director Moroheiya, is there another pyramid nearby?”
「ええ。四キロほど はなれたところに、アカーメン王の 弟の ツタン・アラーメン王の ピラミッドが あります」

“Did you figure it out? There wasn’t any secret passage. Broccoli wanted us to believe that the pyramid of King Aramen was actually King Akamen’s pyramid,” Detective Cabbage said, turning to Tomato-chan and Buttered-Potato-kun.
「なぜ そんなことを したかと いえば、アルセーヌ・セロリが おうごんの マスクを ぬすんでしまったと おもわせ、あわてて しらべに かけつける 人たちに まじって、ツタン・アカーメン王の ピラミッドに はいりこみ、おうごんの マスクを もちだそうと おもったからさ。しょちょう、おうごんの マスクは ぬすまれては いません。きょうじゅが もっているのは、ほんものの おうごんの マスクです」
“And why did he do that? Because he wanted to make us believe that Arsène Celery had stolen the golden mask, and while everyone rushed in to investigate, he planned to sneak into King Tut-An-Aramen’s pyramid and take the golden mask. カリフラワーきょうじゅは、右の 手首に 目をやって、にがわらいした。
Professor Cauliflower glanced at his right wrist and gave a bitter smile.
「さすがは キャベたまたんてい、よく みやぶった。ガイドに へんそうして ダイコンけいぶと したしくなり、アカーメン王の ピラミッドに いれてもらおうと したが、けいかいが きびしくて、うまくいかなかった。
“As expected of Detective Cabbage, you saw right through it. I disguised myself as a guide and tried to befriend Inspector Daikon to gain access to King Akamen’s pyramid, but the security was too tight, and it didn’t go as planned.
すると、けいぶが、おまえたちを しょうかいしてくれた。
Then, the officer introduced me to all of you.
おまえたちは、おうごんの マスクを 見たがっていた。そこで、おまえたちを アラーメン王の ピラミッドに あんないして、わざと あの はり紙を 見せたのさ。目かくしを したのは、道じゅんが わかってしまっては、ちがう ピラミッドに つれていったのが わかってしまうと おもったからだ。けいかくは うまくいったが、ふたつの ピラミッドの ＜王のへや＞に つうじる つうろが、のぼりと くだりに なっているのを 見やぶるとは、さすがだったな。だが、しょうぶは まだ ついてないぞ。おうごんの マスクは わがはいが もらっていく！」

Professor Cauliflower—no, Arsène Celery—swiftly turned and dashed toward the pyramid, clutching the golden mask as he began climbing it.
「にがすものか！」
“You're not getting away!”
頭の はっぱを ひきはがそうとした キャベたまたんていの 手を、ダイコンけいぶが とめた。
Detective Cabbage reached out to pull at Celery’s leafy head, but Officer Daikon stopped him.
「ここは、ぼくに まかせてくれたまえ」
“Leave this to me.”
そういうと、ダイコンけいぶは、こしに さしていた へんな かたちの ピストルを ぬきとり、セロリを ねらって ひきがねを ひいた。
Saying this, Inspector Daikon drew a strange-looking pistol from his waist, aimed it at Celery, and pulled the trigger.
花火のような 音と ともに、ピストルの 先から ほそながい ヘビの ような したが とびだしてきた。
With a sound like fireworks, a long, snake-like tongue shot out from the barrel of the pistol.
ヘビのような したは、ピラミッドの しゃめんを のぼっている セロリめがけて ひゅうっと のびていき、かかえていた おうごんの マスクに くるくるっと まきついた。
The tongue slithered through the air, stretching toward Celery, who was climbing the slope of the pyramid, and coiled itself around the golden mask he was holding.
「わっ、な、なにを する！」
“W-What are you doing?!”
おどろいた セロリは おもわず 手を はなした。
Startled, Celery let go of the mask without thinking.
すると ほそながい したは、おうごんの マスクを まきつけたまま、しゅーっと ちぢんでいき、モロヘイヤしょちょうの 手もとに マスクを おろした。
The long tongue, still wrapped around the golden mask, quickly retracted and lowered the mask safely into Director Moroheiya’s hands.
「これは、カボチャはかせが はつめいした、カメレオンピストルだよ」ダイコンけいぶが いった。
“That’s the Chameleon Pistol, invented by Dr. Pumpkin,” said Officer Daikon.
「エジプトけいさつに うりこんでくれと、はかせから たのまれていたんだ。ちょうど いい きかいだから、ためしてみたのさ」
“The doctor asked me to pitch it to the Egyptian police. This was a perfect opportunity, so I decided to give it a try.”
「くそっ」
“Damn it.”
セロリは、くやしそうに くちびるを かむと、こんどは サルのように すばやく ピラミッドを のぼりだし、あっというまに てっぺんに たどりつくと、むこうがわに きえてしまった。
Celery, biting his lip in frustration, quickly climbed the pyramid like a monkey. In no time, he reached the top and disappeared over the other side.
「にがすな！」
“Don’t let him get away!”
「おえ！」
“Chase him!”
モロヘイヤしょちょうと ダイコンけいぶが、あわてて ピラミッドの むこうがわに まわろうと した ときだ。
Just as Director Moroheiya and Inspector Daikon rushed to go around the pyramid, trying to catch him,
「あっ、あれ、あれ 見て！」じゃがバタくんが さけんだ。
Buttered-Potato-kun shouted out. “Ah! Look, look at that!”
赤い 気球が、星空を せにして、ピラミッドの てっぺんから ゆらりと すがたを あらわしたのだ。
A red hot air balloon slowly appeared, silhouetted against the starry sky, rising from the top of the pyramid.
気球には、黒い ぼうしに 黒い マント、黒い マスクを した アルセーヌ・セロリが のっていた。
In the hot air balloon was Arsène Celery, dressed in a black hat, black cape, and black mask.
「キャベたまたんてい、また、あおう」
“Until we meet again, Detective Cabbage.”
アルセーヌ・セロリは、キャベたまたんていに むかって、ひらっと 手を ふった。
Arsène Celery waved lightly toward Detective Cabbage.
気球は ぐんぐん たかく のぼっていき、やがて 小さな 点のように なって 夜空に きえた。
The balloon steadily rose higher and higher, eventually becoming a small dot before disappearing into the night sky.
キャベたまたんていたちは、エジプトけいさつから かんしゃじょうを もらって、かえってきた。
Detective Cabbage and his team received a letter of appreciation from the Egyptian police and returned home.
かんしゃじょうは、がくに いれられて、じむしょの かべに かけられた。
The letter was framed and hung on the wall of the office.
でも、キャベたまたんていは、ちっとも うれしそうじゃ なかった。
However, Detective Cabbage didn’t seem happy at all.
エジプトの たべものが あわなかったのか、かえってきてから まいにちのように、げり ばっかり していたんだ。
Maybe the food in Egypt didn’t agree with him, because ever since he came back, he had been dealing with diarrhea almost every day.
