さばくに あくまが すんでいた。
あくまは とっても くいしんぼうで、にんげんを みつけると、たちまち ひとのみに して しまうのだった。
あるひの こと、さばくの むしを けんきゅう している はかせが あくまの めの まえに ごそごそ はってきた。
はかせは むちゅうで むしを かんさつしている。
あくまは はかせを つかみあげて、ごぶり、と ひといきに のみこんだ。
そして、おいしくない めがねや くつを、ぷっぷっと、はきだした。
あくまは まだ ちょっと なにか たべたい きぶん。
すると、たびの しょうねんが やってきた。
「よーし、この こを たべてやれ。そしたら、ちょうど まんぷくだ。」
あくまが、こどもを つかまえて、おおきく くちを あけたとき、こどもは、そらを ゆびさした。
「あっ、ひこうきだ！」
おもわず あくまも、そらを みあげた。
ぶーんと ひこうきが とんでいる。
その すきに こどもは、あくまの おなかの チャックを、いっきに ひきおろした。
あくまの おなかは、ぱらりと ひらいて、なかから、はかせが、ころん、と でてきた。
こどもと はかせは、すばやく あくまを うらがえしに して、おしこんで、チャックを ジャッと しめた。
あくまは ボールのように なってしまった。
そこへ、さばくの とうぞくが、らくだに のって やってきた。
「おい、おまえたち。」
おかしらが、かたなを ぬいた。
「おとなしく かねを だすんだ。」
「ぼくたち、おかねは ないけれど、たからものなら、この なかに ある。」
こどもは、ボールを ゆびさした。
「なに？ この なかに たからものだと。」
おかしらが、ボールの チャックを あけた。
その とたん、ぬうっと あくまが あらわれた。
たちまち あくまは、おかしらを、かぼり、と ひとのみに のみこんだ。
てしたどもは「ひぇー。」あわてて、にげていった。
だけど、あくまの おなかの チャックは、あいたままだった。
それで、おかしらは、あくまの なかから、ころん、と でてきた。
「こわかったよー。」
おかしらは、なきながら にげていった。
そのとき、さっと かぜが ふいた。
おなかが ひらいて、からっぽの あくまは、ひらひら、とんでいった。
はかせと たびの しょうねんは、おかしらの のこした らくだに のって さばくの たびを つづけたよ。

**SABAKU NO KUISHINBO (The Glutton of the Desert)**
In a desert, there lived a gluttonous demon. The demon was always hungry and would instantly swallow any human he found.
One day, a scientist who was researching desert insects came crawling into the demon's sight. The scientist was engrossed in observing the insects. The demon grabbed the scientist and gulped him down in one go, spitting out the unappetizing glasses and shoes.
Still feeling a bit peckish, the demon spotted a young traveler approaching. "Alright, I'll eat this boy. Then I'll be completely full," thought the demon. Just as he was about to catch the boy and open his mouth wide, the boy pointed to the sky. "Look, an airplane!" he exclaimed. The demon, curious, looked up at the sky, and at that moment, the boy quickly unzipped the demon's stomach. Out tumbled the scientist.
The boy and the scientist swiftly turned the demon inside out and zipped him up, turning him into a ball.
Just then, a desert bandit riding a camel arrived. "Hey, you two," the bandit leader said, drawing his sword. "Hand over your money quietly."
"We don't have any money, but there's a treasure inside here," the boy said, pointing to the ball. "What? A treasure inside this?" The bandit leader opened the zipper of the ball, and out popped the demon. The demon immediately swallowed the bandit leader whole. Terrified, the bandit's henchmen fled in a hurry.
However, the demon's stomach zipper was still open, so the bandit leader soon tumbled out. "That was scary!" he cried as he ran away in tears.
At that moment, a breeze blew through the desert. The empty demon, with his open stomach, fluttered and flew away.
The scientist and the young traveler continued their journey across the desert on the bandit leader's abandoned camel.
