さんまいのおふだ SANMAI NO OFUDA （The Three Talismans）
あるひ、おてらの こぞうさんが おしょうさんに いいました。
One day, a little apprentice at a temple asked the head monk:
「おしょうさん おしょうさん、やまへ くりひろいに いっても いいですか」
"Master, Master, may I go to the mountains to gather chestnuts?"
「よし よし いっといで」
"Sure, go ahead,"
おしょうさんは うなずくと、
the head monk nodded and added,
「けがなど しないよう きをつけてな。こまった ときは この おふだを つかうと よいぞ」
"Be careful not to get hurt. If you find yourself in trouble, use these talismans."
そう いって、こぞうさんに おふだを さんまい くれました。
He gave the little apprentice three talismans.
やまへ きて みると、あちらにも こちらにも、くりの みが ころころ。
When the apprentice reached the mountains, he saw chestnuts scattered all around.
「すてき すてき」
"Wonderful, wonderful!"
こぞうさんは おおよろこびで、くりの みを ひろいはじめました。
Overjoyed, the apprentice began picking up the chestnuts.
ところが たいへん。きがつくと、みちが わからなく なって きたのです。
But soon, he realized he had lost his way.
「どう しよう。」
"Oh no, what should I do?"
なきそうに なった とき、とおくに いっけんの いえが みえました。
Just as he was about to cry, he spotted a house in the distance.
いえの なか から でて きたのは、きれいな おんなのひと。
A beautiful woman came out of the house and,
はなしを きいた おんなのひとは、
after hearing his story, said,
「まあ まあ、それは かわいそうに。もう おそいから、こんやは ここで とまって いらっしゃい」
"Oh my, that’s terrible. It's late now, so why don’t you stay here for the night?"
ところが、ふとんへ もぐりこんだ とき、どこからか こえが きこえて きました。
But as soon as the apprentice got into bed, he heard a strange voice:
だらずく だらずく、だらずく だった
"Darazuku darazuku, darazuku datta,
おきろや おきろや、だらずく だった
Wake up, wake up, darazuku datta,
おきて、おんなの かお みろや
Look at the woman’s face!"
すると、おんなの ひとの かおが、いつのまにか おそろしい おにばばの かおに かわって いるでは ありませんか。
When the apprentice looked, the woman’s face had changed into that of a terrifying demon hag!
こぞうさんは びっくり。
The apprentice was shocked.
「おしっこが したい おしっこが したい。おしっこに いかせてよう」
"I need to pee, I need to pee! Let me go to the bathroom!"
「なに なに、おしっこだと？ では、にげられないように こう して やろう」
"What? You need to pee? Well, I’ll make sure you can’t run away."
おにばばは、こぞうさんの こしに つなを むすびつけると、
The demon hag tied a rope around the apprentice’s waist and said,
「さあ さあ、はやく いって こい」
"Now, hurry up and go!"
こぞうさんは べんじょへ いくと、こしの なわを こっそり はしらに むすびつけました。
The apprentice went to the bathroom and secretly tied the rope around a pillar instead of his waist.
「べんじょの かみさま、おたすけください。おにばばが なわを ひいたら、かわりに へんじを してください。おねがいします おねがいします」
"God of the bathroom, please help me! When the demon hag pulls the rope, please answer in my place. I beg you, I beg you!"
そう いうと、おにばばの いえから にげだして、あとをも みずに どんどこ どんどこ。
Saying this, the apprentice ran out of the demon hag’s house without looking back, as fast as he could.
そう とは しらない おにばばは、まちきれなく なって つなを ひっぱりました。
The demon hag, unaware of what had happened, eventually grew impatient and pulled the rope.
「まだか まだか」
"Are you done yet? Are you done yet?"
すると、べんじょの はしらが
The pillar answered,
「まだ まだ、まだ まだ」
"Not yet, not yet, not yet, not yet."
「まだか まだか」
"Are you done yet? Are you done yet?"
「まだ まだ、まだ まだ」
"Not yet, not yet, not yet, not yet."
「ええい、いいかげんに せんかい」
"Enough already!"
のぞいて みると、なかは からっぽです。
the demon hag shouted and peeked into the bathroom, only to find it empty.
「やや、にげられたか。まて まて、こぞうめ。にがさんぞ」
"Oh no, he’s escaped! Wait, wait, little monk, I won’t let you get away!"
おにばばは、かんかんに なって こぞうさんの あとを おいかけ はじめました。
Furious, the demon hag started chasing after the apprentice
「たすけてえ たすけてえ」
"Help, help!"
こぞうさんも むちゅうで にげつづけましたが、もう すこしで おいつかれそう。
The apprentice ran for his life, but the demon hag was getting closer.
その とき おもいだしたのが、おしょうさんから もらった おふだです。
Just then, he remembered the talismans the head monk had given him.
こぞうさんは、おふだの いちまいを うしろへ なげると、
He threw one of the talismans behind him and shouted,
「かじ でろ、かじ でろ」
"Fire, appear! Fire, appear!"
その とたん、おにばばの めの まえに、ごおっと おおかじが おこりました。
At that moment, a huge fire erupted right in front of the demon hag.
ほのおと けむりが うずを まいて、その すごい ことと いったら ありません。
The flames and smoke swirled around, creating an intense inferno.
でも おにばばは、ひを はらい ぬけながら、
But the demon hag pushed through the flames, calling out,
「まて まてえ」
"Wait, wait!"
それを みた こぞうさんは、また いちまい おふだを なげると、
Seeing this, the apprentice threw another talisman and shouted,
「やま でろ、やま でろ」
"Mountain, appear! Mountain, appear!"
その とたん、おにばばの めの まえに にゅうっと すなの やまが そびえました。
Immediately, a massive sand mountain rose up before the demon hag.
すなですから、のぼろうと する たびに、ずるずる あしが すべります。
As it was made of sand, every time she tried to climb, her feet slipped.
でも おにばばは、すべったり ころんだり しながら、
But the demon hag kept slipping and tumbling while calling out,
「まて まてえ」
"Wait, wait!"
それを みた こぞうさんは、また いちまい おふだを なげると、
The apprentice then threw the last talisman and shouted,
「かわ でろ、かわ でろ」
"River, appear! River, appear!"
その とたん、おにばばの めの まえに どおっと かわが ながれ はじめました。
At that instant, a powerful river began flowing right in front of the demon hag.
いきおいの いい かわですから、あしを いれただけでも、ながされて しまいそう。
The current was so strong that just stepping into it would sweep her away.
でも おにばばは ばしゃ ばしゃ、ばしゃ ばしゃ、みずを きりながら、
But the demon hag splashed through the water, shouting,
「まて まてえ」
"Wait, wait!"
「わあい、たすけてえ」
"Help, help!"
むちゅうで にげて いく うち、やっとのこと おてらが みえて きました。
the apprentice cried as he ran, and finally, he saw the temple in the distance.
こぞうさんは、おてらへ とびこむと、
He dashed into the temple and shouted,
「おしょうさん おしょうさん、おにばばが おにばばが」
"Master, Master, the demon hag! The demon hag!"
「なに なに、おにばばだと。よし よし、つづらの なかに かくれて、じっと して いなさい」
"What? A demon hag? Alright, alright, hide in this chest and stay still," the head monk said.
おしょうさんは、こぞうさんを つづらに いれると、おにばばの てが とどかないよう、なわで しばって てんじょうから ぶらさげました。
He placed the apprentice in a chest, tied it with a rope, and hung it from the ceiling, out of the demon hag’s reach.
そこへ おにばばが とびこんで きて、あたりを きょろ きょろ。
Just then, the demon hag burst into the temple, looking around suspiciously.
「ふふん、あそこの つづらへ かくしたな。てが とどかないと おもったら、おおまちがい。それ、たかく なれ、たかく なれ」
"Humph, you hid him in that chest, didn’t you? If you think I can’t reach it, you’re sorely mistaken. Higher, higher!"
おまじないを となえると いっしょに、おにばばの からだが ぐんぐん おおきく なって、いまにも つづらに とどきそう。
The demon hag chanted a spell, and her body began to grow larger and larger, until she was almost tall enough to reach the chest.
それを みた おしょうさんが、おおきな こえで いいました。
Seeing this, the head monk shouted in a loud voice,
「それ、ひくく なれ ひくく なれ」
"Lower, lower!"
その とたん、おにばばの からだが ぐんぐん ちぢみ はじめて、とうとう まめつぶ ぐらいの おおきさに なって しまいました。
Instantly, the demon hag’s body began to shrink until she was as small as a grain of rice.
おしょうさんは、その おにばばを つまみあげると、ひとくちに ごくっ。
The head monk picked up the tiny demon hag and swallowed her in one gulp.
「さあて、これで よし。こぞうや、もう でて きても だいじょうぶだぞ」
"Well, that’s that. Little monk, it’s safe to come out now."
「わあい、おしょうさん ありがとう」
"Yay, thank you, Master!"
こうして、こぞうさんは ぶじに たすかる ことが できましたとさ。
And so, the little apprentice was saved, and all was well.
