ある日、かにが たべものを さがしに でかけました。
One day, a crab went out looking for food.
小川の そばで 大きな おにぎりを 見つけた かには にこ にこ。
By a small stream, the crab found a large rice ball, and was very happy.
かえる と中、さるに ばったり あいました。
On the way back, the crab met a monkey.
さるは かきの たねしか 見つけられなかったので、おにぎりが ほしくて たまりません。
The monkey had only found a persimmon seed and desperately wanted the crab's rice ball.
「かにくん。この かきの たねと おにぎりを とりかえないか？」
"Hey, Crab! How about trading your rice ball for this persimmon seed?" said the monkey.
「おにぎりの ほうが いいよ。」
"The rice ball is better," said the crab.
「かきの たねを そだてれば、おいしい みを いっぱい つけるよ。」
"But if you grow this persimmon seed, it will bear lots of delicious fruit!" the monkey insisted.
「そうか！いい ことを きいた。それなら、おにぎりと とりかえよう。」
The crab thought, "That sounds great! Okay, let's trade."
おにぎりを うけとった さるは すぐに たべて しまいました。
The monkey quickly took the rice ball and ate it right away.
「おとうさん、おかえりなさい。」
"Welcome back, Dad!"
いえに かえった かにを 子がにが 出むかえます。
When the crab returned home, his child welcomed him warmly.
はなしを きいて 子がにも 大よろこび。
Hearing the story, the little crab was thrilled.
「早く あまい みが たべたいな。」
"I can't wait to eat the sweet fruit!"
おや子で たねを まきました。
The crab and his child planted the persimmon seed together.
かには 水を かけながら うたいます。
As they watered the seed, the crab sang,
「早く めを 出せ、かきの たね。出さなきゃ はさみで チョキンと きるぞ。」
"Hurry up and sprout, little persimmon seed! If you don't, I'll cut you with my claws!"
かきの たねは あわてて 土の 中から かわいい めを 出しました。
The persimmon seed, startled, quickly sprouted from the ground.
つぎの日、かには かきの めに むかって うたいます。
The next day, the crab sang to the persimmon sprout,
「早く そだてよ、かきの めよ。おそいと はさみで きっちゃうぞ。」
"Grow quickly, persimmon sprout! If you don't, I'll cut you with my claws!"
かきの めは 大いそぎで ぐんぐん のびて、小さな 木に なりました。
The sprout grew rapidly and became a small tree.
まい日、かには うたいながら 水を やりました。
Every day, the crab watered it while singing.
かきの 木は はの しげる りっぱな 木に なりました。
The persimmon tree grew tall with lush leaves.
白い 花が さくと、かには うたいます。
When white flowers bloomed, the crab sang again,
「早く みに なれ、かきの 花。おそいと はさみで きっちゃうぞ。」
"Turn into fruit, persimmon flowers! If you don't, I'll cut you with my claws!"
すると、かきの 花は つぎつぎと 青い みに かわり、やがて 赤くなって いきました。
The flowers soon turned into green fruit, and eventually ripened into bright red persimmons.
そして かきの 木に、おいしそうな みが どっさり みのったのです。
The tree turned into a full of delicious-looking persimmons.
かにの おや子は 大よろこび。
The crab and his child were overjoyed.
ぼうで かきの みを とろうと しましたが、かきに とどきません。
They tried to knock the persimmons down with a stick, but couldn't reach them.
「こまったなあ.....。」
"What should we do now...?"
そこへ とおりかかった さるは、大きな かきの 木に びっくり。
Just then, the monkey happened to pass by and was surprised by the big persimmon tree.
おまけに、木には おいしそうな かきの みが どっさり みのって います。
On top of that, it was loaded with ripe fruit.
そこで さるは いいました。
The monkey said,
「どうだい？ これも、ぼくが あの かきの たねを おにぎりと とりかえて あげた おかげだぞ。」
"See? This happened because I gave you that persimmon seed in exchange for your rice ball."
「さるくんの いう とおりだよ。おれいに かきを どっさり あげるから、かきを とって くれないか？。」
The crab responded, "You're right! As a thank you, I'll give you some persimmons. Can you help us pick them?"
「木のぼりなら まかせとけ！」
"Leave it to me! I'm great at climbing trees!" said the monkey.
さるは するする 木に のぼると、おいしそうな みを むしょむしょ。
The monkey climbed the tree effortlessly and began munching on the delicious persimmons.
かには 木の 下で まって いましたが、いつまで たっても さるは 一人で たべる ばかり。
The crab waited beneath the tree, but no matter how long he waited, the monkey just kept eating by himself.
「さるくん。早く こっちにも かきを とっておくれよ。」
"Hey, Monkey! Hurry up and throw some persimmons down for us too!" the crab called out.
「わかったよ。」
"Alright, alright," the monkey said.
でも さるは、おいしい かきを 一人じめ したくなりました。
But he wanted to keep all the sweet persimmons for himself.
そこで、わざと たべられない 青い かきを とると、かに めがけて なげつけたのです。
So instead, he picked some unripe green persimmons and threw them at the crab.
「いたたたっ！ ひどいよ。」
"Ouch! That's terrible!" cried the crab.
青くて かたい かきが あたって、おとうさんがには 大けがを してしまいました。
The hard, green persimmons hit the crab, injuring him badly.
子がには なきながら かんびょうを しました。
The little crab cried as he cared for his injured father.
「おとうさん。ぼくが かならず さるを こらしめてやる。」
"Don't worry, Dad. I'll make sure to get back at the monkey," the little crab vowed.
そこへ、おとうさんがにの ともだちの はちが あそびに きました。
At that moment, a friend of the father crab, a bee, came by for a visit.
子がにから はなしを きいて はちは かんかんです。
After hearing the story from the little crab, the bee was furious.
「ひどい さるだ。よし、こらしめて あげるよ。」
"That monkey is awful! I'll help teach him a lesson."
はちに はなしを きいて、こんぶと うすも やってきました。
Hearing about the plan, a piece of kelp and a heavy mortar also came to help.
「気の やさしい かにくんを、こんな 目に あわせるなんて！」
"It's terrible that such a kind crab was treated this way!" they said.
「ひどい さるだ。みんなで こらしめて やろう。」
"That monkey is terrible. Let's all punish him together."
みんなは そろって さるの いえに むかいました。
Everyone headed to his house.
山みちを くりが ころころ ころがってきます。
As they were on their way, a chestnut rolled by
はなしを きいて くりも おこりました。
and, after hearing the story, said,
「よし！ぼくも 手つだうよ。」
"I'll help too!"
さるの いえに つきました。
They arrived at the monkey's house.
はちが とびながら なかの ようすを おしえます。
The bee flew around and reported,
「ちょうど いい。さるは るすだ。」
"Perfect timing. The monkey isn't home."
「みんな、かくれて まつんだ！」
"Everyone, hide and wait!"
くりは いろりの はいの 中に もぐりこみました。
The chestnut hid in the ashes of the hearth,
はちは 水がめの うしろに、うすは やねの 上に かくれました。
the bee hid behind the water jug, and the mortar climbed onto the roof.
「ぼくは ここが いいな。」
"I like to hide here".
こんぶが 入り口の しきいに ねそべります。
the kelp lay down at the entrance.
やがて、さるが かえってきました。
Eventually, the monkey came home.
さるが いろりの 火を おこすと、あつくなった くりが パチン！
As the monkey lit a fire in the hearth, the hot chestnut suddenly popped
さるの かおに あたりました。
and hit the monkey's face.
「あっちちっ！」
"Ouch! That's hot!"
あわてて 水を くもうと すると、はちが 目の 上を チクリ。
As the monkey rushed to fetch water, the bee stung him above his eye.
「いたいよう！」
"Ouch! That hurts!"
おもてに かけ出した さるは、しきいに ねていた こんぶに 足を すべらせて、すってん ころり！
The monkey ran outside, only to slip on the kelp lying across the entrance and fall down with a thud.
そこへ、やねの 上から うすが ドシーンと おちてきました。
Then, the heavy mortar fell from the roof and landed on the monkey with a crash.
「ぎゃあー！」
"Ahhh!" screamed the monkey.
「おまえは なにも していない かにくんを ひどい目に あわせたんだぞ。」
"You hurt the crab, who did nothing wrong. Now it's your turn to suffer!" everyone shouted.
「ぼくが わるかった。どうぞ ゆるして ください。」
"I was wrong! Please forgive me!" the monkey cried.
さるは かにの いえに お見まいに いって、ないて あやまりました。
The monkey went to the crab's house, crying and apologizing.
やがて、かには すっかり げん気に なりました。
Eventually, the crab fully recovered.
子がにも、はち、こんぶ、うす、くりも 大よろこび。
The little crab, the bee, the kelp, the mortar, and the chestnut were all overjoyed.
それからも みんなは 力を あわせ、たのしい まい日を すごしました。
From then on, they all worked together and spent happy days together.
