あるひ、いばりんぼうの とのさまが、けらいの たろうかじゃを よびつけて いいました。
「きょう、わしは おちゃの かいに いく。みんなは うまに のって、かたなも さしてくるだろうから、わしだけ ないのは みっともない。 すぐに おじさんの ところへ いって、おちゃと かたなと うまを かりてまいれ。」
「なにもかも かりるのだったら、おちゃの かいなんて でることは ないのになあ。」
たろうかじゃは ぶつぶつ もんくを いいながら、おじさんの いえに むかいました。
おじさんは たろうかじゃに、おちゃと かたなと うまを かしてやると、こう いいました。
「この うまは、うしろで せきを すると、あばれだすから きを つけなさい。」
「はい、きを つけます。でも、ほかの ひとが せきを して うまが あばれたら、どう いたしましょう？」
たろうかじゃが きくと、
「だいじょうぶ。うまを しずかに させる まじないが ある。『しずまりたまえ、しどうほうがく。』と となえるのだ。」
たかろうじゃが かえりみちを いそいでいると、とのさまが、とちゅうまで むかえに きていました。
「こら！ たかろうじゃ、おそいぞ！ おちゃの かいに おくれるでは ないか！」
とのさまは ぷりぷり おこって、たかろうじゃを つきとばし、さっさと うまに のってしまいました。
（まったく なんと かってな とのさまだろう.....。）
たかろうじゃは あきれて ためいきを つきましたが、ふと、いいことを おもいつきました。
「コホン、コホン、コホン。コホン、コホン、コホン。」
うしろで せきが きこえたので、うまはきゅうに あばれだし、とのさまは うまから どすーんと おちてしまいました。
さっそく たかろうじゃは 「しずまりたまえ、しどうほうがく。」と となえてみました。
すると どうでしょう。うまは なにごとも なかったように おとなしく なりました。
たかろうじゃは ひらりと うまに またがり、とのさまを みおろして いいました。
「とのさまを おたすけしたい ところですが、うまを しずめておりますので しつれい。」
とのさまは、いつまでも おしりを さすっていては かっこうが わるいと おもい、むりを して、すぐ うまに またがりました。
そして たかろうじゃに、「まったく。おまえが わるいから うまが あばれるのだ！」と、ねちねち もんくを いいはじめました。
そこで たかろうじゃは もう いちど、「コホン、コホン、コホン。」
うまは ひひーんと いななき、おしりを ふりあげました。
とのさまは またもや ずでん！
たかろうじゃは、「しずまりたまえ、しどうほうがく。」と うまを しずめ、ひょいと またがり、「との、だいじょうぶですか？」と、こえを かけました。
「うう、こしを つよく うった。わしは もう その うまには のらない。おまえが のれ。」
とのさまに にもつを もたせ、たかろうじゃが うまに のっていくことに しました。
「との、これでは まるで わたしが とので、とのが けらいに みえますな。」
とのさまは こしを さすりながら しぶしぶ、「そうだな。」
「とのが ますます ごりっぱに なれば、わたしも ひとを つかうように なるかも しれません。ちょっと れんしゅうを してみても よいでしょうか？」
「ふむ、よかろう。」
とのさまが うなずくと、さっそく たかろうじゃは.......。
「こら！ たかろうじゃ、おそいぞ！ おちゃの かいに おくれるでは ないか！ まったく。おまえが わるいから うまが あばれるのだ！」
と とのさま そっくりに いいました。
「むむむ。それは さっき わしが いったことでは ないか！」
とのさまは ぷんぷん おこり、たかろうじゃを うまから ひきずりおろして、じぶんが のりました。
すると またまた たかろうじゃが、「コホン、コホン、コホン。」
ずでーん！
「しずまりたまえ、しどうほうがく。」
たかろうじゃは そう となえると、うまにでは なく とのさまに またがりました。
みていた ひとたちは おおわらい。
はずかしい おもいを した とのさまは、この ひから いばるのは やめたと いうことです。

## The Spell of Calming
One day, a boastful lord called his servant, Taro Kaja, and said:
"Today, I am going to a tea ceremony. Everyone else will be on horseback, wearing swords, so it would look bad if I were the only one without. Go to my uncle's place immediately and borrow tea, a sword, and a horse."
"If he’s going to borrow everything, there's no point in going to the tea ceremony."
Grumbling, Taro Kaja headed to the uncle's house.
The uncle lent Taro Kaja tea, a sword, and a horse, and said:
"This horse becomes unruly if it hears someone coughing behind it, so be careful."
"Yes, I'll be careful. But what if someone else coughs and the horse goes wild?"
When Taro Kaja asked, the uncle replied:
"Don't worry. There's a spell to calm the horse. You recite, 'Shizumari Tamae, Shido Hougaku.'"
Hurrying back, Taro Kaja was met halfway by the lord.
"Hey! Taro Kaja, you're late! We'll be late for the tea ceremony!"
The lord angrily shoved Taro Kaja aside and quickly mounted the horse.
(What a selfish lord...)
Taro Kaja sighed in exasperation, but then he had an idea.
"Ahem, ahem, ahem. Ahem, ahem, ahem."
Hearing the coughing behind it, the horse suddenly went wild, and the lord was thrown off with a thud.
Quickly, Taro Kaja recited, "Shizumari Tamae, Shido Hougaku."
And lo and behold, the horse calmed down as if nothing had happened.
Taro Kaja deftly mounted the horse, looked down at the lord, and said:
"I'd like to help you, my lord, but I’m busy calming the horse."
The lord, not wanting to look foolish while rubbing his sore bottom, forced himself to get back on the horse.
Then he started nagging at Taro Kaja again, "Really, it’s your fault the horse went wild!"
So, Taro Kaja coughed again, "Ahem, ahem, ahem."
The horse neighed and kicked up its rear. The lord was thrown off once more with a thud!
Taro Kaja recited, "Shizumari Tamae, Shido Hougaku," calming the horse and effortlessly mounting it again.
"Are you alright, my lord?" he asked.
"I hit my back hard. I won't ride that horse anymore. You ride it."
The lord carried the luggage while Taro Kaja rode the horse.
"My lord, it looks like I’m the lord and you’re the servant."
The lord grudgingly replied, "Indeed."
"If you become more distinguished, I might become a person of authority too. Can I practice giving orders?"
"Alright."
With the lord's nod, Taro Kaja immediately mimicked him:
"Hey! Taro Kaja, you're late! We'll be late for the tea ceremony! Really, it’s your fault the horse went wild!"
"Hmm, that’s exactly what I said earlier!"
The lord, fuming, pulled Taro Kaja off the horse and mounted it himself.
Then, once again, Taro Kaja coughed, "Ahem, ahem, ahem."
Thud!
"Shizumari Tamae, Shido Hougaku."
As Taro Kaja recited the spell, he didn't calm the horse but instead mounted the lord.
The onlookers burst into laughter.
Embarrassed, the lord stopped boasting from that day on.
