第1章 かぼちゃ
Chapter 1: The Pumpkin
こぶたの オリバーくんと とうさんは、はたけを つくっていました。
Little pig Oliver and his dad were working on their garden.
まず 土を ならして、それから まっすぐで とても ながい 五つの むねを つくりました。
First, they leveled the soil and then made five straight, very long rows.
たねをまいて、土をかけました。
They planted seeds and covered them with soil.
さいしょの うねに はつかだいこん。
In the first row, they planted radishes.
つぎは さやいんげん。
Next came snap beans.
それから きゅうり。
Then cucumbers.
それから おもしろい かたちを した ぺポかぼちゃ。
Then the fun, oddly shaped pepo pumpkins.
おしまいの うねは ふつうの かぼちゃです。
The last row was for regular pumpkins.
「さあ、これでよし。うまくいくよ」とうさんは いいました。
"Alright, that’s good. Everything will grow well," Dad said.
そのとき こぶたくんは、くさのあいだに なにかの たねを みつけました。
At that moment, little pig Oliver found a seed lying in the grass.
「ほら、とうさん、みてみて。たねが」
"Look, Dad, look! A seed!" Oliver exclaimed.
「ああ。きっと いちつぶ おっことしたんだ」
"Oh, it must have fallen out," Dad said.
とうさんは こぶたくんの たねを まくところを つくって やりました。
Dad prepared a spot for Oliver to plant the seed.
こぶたくんは そこへ、たねを まきました。
Oliver planted it there.
「これ、なんの たねだろ」こぶたくんは ききました。
"I wonder what kind of seed it is," Oliver asked.
「まってりゃ、そのうち わかる」とうさんは いいました。
"Just wait and see. You’ll find out soon enough," Dad replied.
「きっと おやおやって いうような ものだよ」
"I'm sure it will be something surprising."
つぎのあさ こぶたくんは、あの なんだか わからない たねの ところへ いきました。
「The next morning, Oliver went to check the mystery seed.
とうさん」と こぶたくん。
"Dad," Oliver called.
「なんにも でてないよ」
"Nothing's growing yet."
「いや まだまだ」と とうさん。
"Not yet," Dad replied.
「めが でるには もうちょっと かかる。おひさまが てって、あめが ふってからだ。そうすると やがて かわいい めが でてくる」
"It takes a bit more time for it to sprout. The sun needs to shine, and the rain needs to fall. Then, soon enough, a little sprout will come up."
それから おひさまが てって、あめが ふりました。
The sun shone, and the rain fell.
ある あさの ことです。こぶたくんは、あの たねを まいたところから、みどりいろの ものが はえてきたのを みつけました。
One morning, Oliver found something green growing where he had planted the seed.
「とうさん、たねが めをだした」と こぶたくん。
"Dad, the seed sprouted!" Oliver exclaimed.
「ほらね」と とうさん。
"See, I told you," Dad said.
「これ なんだろう」こぶたくんは たずねました。
"What do you think it is?" Oliver asked.
「ぺポかぼちゃ みたいだな」とうさんは いいました。
"It looks like a pepo pumpkin," Dad said.
「ぺポかぼちゃ、ぼく すき」と こぶたくん。
"I love pepo pumpkins," said Oliver.
「いつごろ たべられる」
"When can we eat it?"
「まだまだ」と とうさん。
"Not yet," Dad replied.
「もっと おおきく なるまで またなくちゃ」
"We have to wait until it gets bigger."
こぶたくんと とうさんは、まいにち はたけで はたらきました。
Every day, Oliver and Dad worked in the garden.
こぶたくんは じぶんの ぺポかぼちゃに、おひさまが あつく てりつけすぎるときには ひかげを つくってやりました。
Oliver cared for his pepo pumpkin, shading it when the sun got too hot
ひでりの ときには 水を やりました。
and watering it during dry spells.
まもなく、かぼちゃは 花を つけました。
Soon, the pumpkin blossomed.
そして ある日、かわいい みが なりました。
One day, a small pumpkin appeared.
「さあ、これで もう たべられるよね？」と こぶたくん。
"Alright, can we eat it now?" Oliver asked.
「まだまだ」と とうさん。
"Not yet," Dad replied.
「もっと もっと おおきく ならなけりゃあ」
"It still needs to grow much, much bigger."
「ずいぶん まつんだね」こぶたくんは いいました。
"Wow, that’s a long wait," Oliver said.
「これは まだまだ おおきくなる」とうさんは いいました。
"This pumpkin is going to get even bigger," Dad said.
こぶたくんの かわいい かぼちゃは どんどん おおきく なりました。
Oliver’s little pumpkin grew larger and larger.
そして ある日 とうさんは いいました。「こんやの ばんごはんは、いよいよ きみの かぼちゃだ」
Then, one day, Dad said, "Tonight, we’ll have your pumpkin for dinner."
こぶたくんは じぶんの かぼちゃを だいどころへ もっていきました。
Oliver proudly brought his pumpkin to the kitchen.
「おやまあ」と かあさん。
"My goodness," said Mom.
「これじゃ いちばん おおきな おなべを つかわなくちゃ だめだわ」
"We'll need the biggest pot we have for this one!"
ばんごはんの テーブルには、おにくりょうりを もった おおざらと、じゃがいも りょうりの ふかざら、それから かぼちゃ やまもりの もっと おおきな ふかざら。
At dinner, the table was full: a big platter of meat, a deep dish of potato dishes, and an even bigger dish piled high with pumpkin.
かぼちゃを ひとくちたべて、「おいしいわね。」と かあさん。
Mom took a bite and said, "It’s delicious."
ひとくちたべて、「こりゃあ いける」と とうさん。
Dad took a bite and said, "This is great."
ひとくちたべて、「うー、おいし」と いもうとの アマンダ。
Oliver’s sister, Amanda, took a bite and said, "Yum, so tasty!"
「ぼく じぶんで そだてたんだ」こぶたくんは いいました。
"I grew it all by myself," Oliver said.
「だからこそ こんなに おいしく なったんだ」とうさんは いいました。
"That’s why it tastes so good," Dad added.
「ねえ もっと」と アマンダ。
"More, please!" said Amanda.
というわけで、かぞく みんなは こぶたくんの つくった ぺポかぼちゃを、それは どっさり たべたのでした。
And so, the whole family enjoyed a generous feast of Oliver's pepo pumpkin.

第2章 ひとりでいたいの
Chapter 2: Wanting to Be Alone
「かあさん、なにしてるの？」こぶたの オリバーくんが いいました。
"What are you doing, Mom?" asked little pig Oliver.
「おせんたくものを ほすところ」と かあさん。
"I'm hanging up the laundry," said Mom.
「ぼく おてつだいする」と こぶたくん。
"I'll help," said Oliver.
かごに てを つっこんで、じぶんの セーラーふくや、いもうとの アマンダのふく、とうさんの パジャマの ズボンを ひっぱりだしました。
He reached into the basket and pulled out his sailor shirt, his little sister Amanda's clothes, and Dad's pajama pants.
「おや、これは ぼくの やきゅうぼうだよ」
"Oh, here's my baseball cap," he said.
そして アマンダの ふくや、とうさんの パジャマの ズボンを じめんに おとしてしまいました。
Then, he accidentally dropped Amanda's clothes and Dad's pajama pants onto the ground.
「まあ、こぶたくんたら！」と おかあさん。
"Oh, Oliver!" said Mom.
アマンダは せんたくかごに よじのぼって、なかに はいってしまいました。
Amanda climbed into the laundry basket and sat inside.
「うわあーん」
"Waahhh!" she cried.
かごは ひっくりかえって、せんたくものは ぜんぶ どろだらけ。
The basket tipped over, and all the laundry got covered in dirt.
「まあ、アマンダったら！」と かあさん。
"Oh, Amanda!" said Mom.
かあさんは せんたくものを みんな あつめて、せんたくきに もどしました。
Mom gathered all the dirty laundry and put it back in the washing machine.
「ねえ、かあさん。これから なにする？」こぶたくんは たずねました。
"Hey, Mom, what are you doing next?" Oliver asked.
「ベッドルームの おそうじ」かあさんは いいました。
"Cleaning the bedroom," Mom replied.
「ぼく おてつだいする」
"I'll help," said Oliver.
かあさんは モップを とりあげました。
Mom picked up the mop.
こぶたくんは ほうきを とりあげました。
Oliver grabbed the broom.
アマンダは ちりとりを とりあげました。
Amanda picked up the dustpan.
おそうじが はじまりました。
They began cleaning,
でも、モップも、ほうきも、ちりとりも みんな こんがらがって、アマンダは ころんでしまいました。
but the mop, broom, and dustpan all got tangled up, and Amanda fell down.
こぶたくんには、ほうきの えが コツン。
The broom handle bonked Oliver on the head.
かあさんは モップを どけました。
Mom put the mop aside.
「おてつだい ありがとう。でも」かあさんは いいました。
"Thanks for your help, but," Mom said,
「おそうじは ひとりのほうが よさそうだわ」
"I think cleaning is something I should do on my own."
かあさんは おおきな いすに すわりました。
Mom sat down in a big chair.
「ねえ、かあさん。これから なにする？」こぶたくんは たずねました。
"Hey, Mom, what are you doing now?" Oliver asked.
「ひとやすみ」と かあさん。
"Taking a break," Mom said.
アマンダは、おかあさんの ひざに あがりました。
Amanda climbed onto Mom's lap.
こぶたくんは サーカスの 本を もってきました。
Oliver brought over a circus book.
「よんで」と こぶたくん。
"Read it to me," Oliver said.
「あとでね」と かあさん。
"Later," Mom replied.
「かあさんは いま、しずかに していたいの。ひとりで いたいの」
"Right now, I want to be quiet. I want to be alone."
「ひとりで？」と こぶたくん。
"Alone?" asked Oliver.
「そういうの、すきじゃ なかったんじゃない？それじゃ かあさん、さびしくなるよ」
"But you don't like being alone, do you? Then you'll feel lonely."
「そんなこと ない」と かあさん。
"Not at all," said Mom.
「そとへ いきましょ」
"Let's go outside."
こぶたくんと かあさんと アマンダは、そとに でました。
Oliver, Mom, and Amanda went outside.
「あなたたち ばんごはんの パイを どろで つくる あそび、すき？」と かあさん。
"Do you two like to play making dinner pies with mud?" Mom asked.
「うん」と こぶたくん。
"Yeah!" said Oliver.
「じゃあ、やってごらん」と かあさん。
"Then go ahead," Mom said.
「ほしブドウも たくさん いれるのよ。そのあいだ、わたし ひとりになる」
"Make sure to add lots of raisins. While you're doing that, I'll be alone."
かあさんは、リンゴの 木のうえに あがりました。
Mom climbed up into the apple tree.
まえに とうさんが つくった いすに こしかけて、ひとりぼっちで なにも しません。
She sat on a chair Dad had made and did nothing, all by herself.
ふたりは、ほしブドウが たくさん はいった どろの パイを つくりました。
Oliver and Amanda made a pie with lots of raisins in the mud.
「パイ、できたよ」と こぶたくん。
"The pie is ready!" Oliver said.
「かあさん、さびしい？」
"Mom, are you lonely?"
「いいえ。さびしくないわよ」と かあさん。
"No, I'm not lonely," said Mom.
「あなたたち、こんどは プリンを つくったら？」
"Why don't you two make pudding next?"
ふたりは、おおきな チョコレートの プリンを つくりました。
Oliver and Amanda made a big chocolate pudding.
「かあさん、まだ さびしく ならない？」こぶたくんが たずねました。
"Mom, aren't you lonely yet?" Oliver asked.
「いいえ。さびしく ないわよ」と かあさん。
"No, I'm still not lonely," said Mom.
「おたんじょうびの ケーキは どう？」
"How about a birthday cake?"
ふたりは、四ほんの ろうそくが たっていて、いちごの シロップの かかっている おたんじょうびの ケーキを こしらえました。
Oliver and Amanda made a birthday cake with four candles and strawberry syrup on top.
「きれいな ケーキだこと」と かあさん。
"What a beautiful cake," said Mom.
「おりてきて、かあさん！」と こぶたくん。
"Come down, Mom!" Oliver called.
「いいわよ」と かあさん。
"Alright," Mom said.
「こぶたくんや アマンダと、わたしも いっしょに いたくなったわ」
"I want to be with you and Amanda now."
「そうだろって、ぼくも おもってた」
"See? I knew it," said Oliver.
「でも、あなたたち、どろだらけだわ」かあさんは いいました。
"But look at you two; you're covered in mud," Mom said.
「おふろに はいりに いきましょ」
"Let's go take a bath."
「いっしょに はいるの？」と こぶたくん。
"Will we go in together?" Oliver asked.
「いっしょに はいるのよ」と かあさん。
"Yes, all together," said Mom.
それで、みんな いっしょに はいりました。
And so, they all went into the bath together.

第3章 ききたいこと
Chapter 3: Things I Want to Ask
こぶたの オリバーくんと とうさんは、ゆきふりの 日に さんぽに でかけました。
Little pig Oliver and his dad went out for a walk on a snowy day.
「とうさん」と こぶたくん。
“Dad,” said Oliver.
「空に ゆきの ひらひらって どのくらい あるの？」
“How many snowflakes are there in the sky?”
「とても たくさん」と とうさん。
“A whole lot,” Dad said.
「かぞえきれない ぐらいだよ」
“So many you can’t count them all.”
「ぼく 百まで かぞえられる」こぶたくんは いいました。
“I can count up to a hundred,” Oliver said.
「もっと もっと あるんだ」とうさんは いいました。
“There are way, way more than that,” Dad replied.
「ものすごい かずだよ」
“An enormous number.”
ふたりは、じめんを みおろしました。
The two of them looked down at the ground.
「とうさん」と こぶたくん。
“Dad,” said Oliver.
「ゆきが ふって、あたりが まっしろに なったとき、はたけは どこへ いったの？」
“When the snow falls and everything turns white, where does the field go?”
「いや、やっぱり そこに あるよ。」と とうさん。
“Well, it’s still there,” Dad said.
「春に なるまで ゆきの したで ねむっているんだ」
“It’s just sleeping under the snow until spring.”
「はるに なると、花も また さくよね」こぶたくんは たずねました。
“When spring comes, the flowers bloom again, right?” Oliver asked.
「うん。おなじ 花では ないがね」と とうさん。
“Yes, but not the same flowers,” Dad said.
「でも、じめんの したでは あたらしい花が これから さこうとして まっている。おひさまが ちきゅうを あたためると、花たちは さくんだ」
“But under the ground, new flowers are waiting to bloom. When the sun warms the earth, the flowers will blossom.”
こぶたくんと とうさんは、あの木や この木を みあげました。
Oliver and Dad looked up at the trees, here and there.
「とうさん」と こぶたくん。
“Dad,” said Oliver.
「ゆきが ふってきたら、とりたちは どこへ いってしまうの？」
“When it snows, where do the birds go?”
「あたたかい くにへ いってしまうものも いる」とうさんは いいました。
“Some of them fly away to warmer countries,” Dad said.
「すに こっているのも いる。あたたかくて、すみごこちの よい すにね」
“Others stay, hiding in warm and cozy nests.”
「ぼくたちの いえって、すに にている」こぶたくんは たずねました。
“Is our house like a nest?” Oliver asked.
「そうだよ」と とうさん。
“Yes, it is,” Dad said.
「ところで そろそろ いえに はいって あたたまろうか」
“Speaking of which, let’s go inside and warm up.”
ふたりは ゆきよけの コートを ぬぎました。
The two of them took off their snow-covered coats.
「とうさん」と こぶたくん。
“Dad,” said Oliver.
「どうして ぼくの つまさき、まだ つめたいの？」
“Why are my toes still cold?”
「あたたまるまで ちょっと かかるんだよ」と とうさん。
“It takes a bit of time to warm up,” Dad said.
「でも いい てが ある」
“But I have an idea.”
とうさんは あつい ココアを 二はい いれました。
Dad made two cups of hot cocoa.
それから ふたりは だんろの そばの おおきな いすに すわりました。
Then, they both sat down in a big chair by the fireplace.
「とうさん」と こぶたくん。
“Dad,” said Oliver.
「とうさんの とうさんは、とうさんの あしの あたためかた、しってた？」
“Did your dad know how to warm up your feet?”
「しってたさ」と とうさん。
“Yes, he did,” Dad said.
「いつも やって くれたよ」と とうさんは たなから アルバムを とりだしました。
“He always did it for me.” Dad pulled an album from the shelf.
「これが、わたしの とうさんの しゃしんだよ。これが、こどもの ころの とうさん」
“This is a photo of my dad. And this is me when I was a child.”
「でも どうして このしゃしん、ぼくと とうさん みたいなの」と こぶたくん。
“But why does this picture look like me and you?” Oliver asked.
「それは、きみも、おじいちゃんも、わたしも、おなじ かぞく だからだよ」とうさんは いいました。
“That’s because you, Grandpa, and I are all part of the same family,” Dad said.
「とうさん」と こぶたくん。
“Dad,” said Oliver.
「とうさんが こども だったとき ぼくは どこにいたの？」
“When you were a child, where was I?”
とうさんは いいました。「そのころ きみは まだ うまれて なかったんだ」
Dad said, “Back then, you hadn’t been born yet.
「きみは、うちの にわで 春を まっている 花たちの ような ものだった。どんな いきものにも、いまが 春だ というときが あるんだよ。ところで、こぶたくん。きみに ききたいことが ひとつだけ あるんだが」
You were like the flowers in our garden, waiting for spring. Every living thing has its own moment that feels like spring.” “By the way, Oliver, there’s something I want to ask you,” Dad said.
「それ、なに？」と こぶたくん。
“What is it?” asked Oliver.
「どうして そんなに、いろいろ ききたがるんんだい」
“Why do you want to ask so many questions?”
「それは ぼくが、たくさんの ことを しりたいからだと おもう」こぶたくんは いいました。
“I think it’s because I want to know a lot of things,” Oliver said.
とうさんは、こぶたくんを だきしめました。
Dad hugged Oliver.
「きみは、いつか きっと、いろいろなことを しるようになる」
“One day, you’ll know so many things,” Dad said.
「とうさん」と こぶたくん。
“Dad,” said Oliver.
「ぼくの つまさき あったかくなった」
“My toes are warm now.”
「そりゃあ よかった」と とうさん。
“That’s great,” Dad said.

第4章 かあさんの休日
Chapter 4: Mom’s Day Off
「じゃあね」と かあさんが いいました。
“See you later,” said Mom.
「ばんごはんまでに かえってくるから」
“I’ll be back by dinner.”
こぶたの オリバーくんと いもうとの アマンダは、かあさんが みえなくなるまで てを ふりました。
Little pig Oliver and his younger sister Amanda waved until Mom was out of sight.
「かあさん、なにしにいったの」と こぶたくん。
“Where did Mom go?” asked Oliver.
「休日を とったの」おばあちゃんは いいました。
“She took a day off,” Grandma said.
「休日って？」と こぶたくん。
“What’s a day off?” asked Oliver.
「したいことは なんでも して いい日の こと」と おばあちゃん。
“It’s a day when you can do whatever you want,” Grandma replied.
「ぼくも 休日 ほしいな」こぶたくんは いいました。
“I want a day off too,” Oliver said.
「いつか とれるように なるわよ」おばあちゃんは いいました。
“You’ll get one someday,” Grandma said.
「さあ、じゃ、あさごはんに しましょ」
“Now, let’s have breakfast.”
おばあちゃんは、こぶたくんの たまごりょうりを おさらに のせました。
Grandma placed some eggs on Oliver’s plate.
「これ、へん」と こぶたくん。
“These are weird,” said Oliver.
「ぼくの たまご とろとろ している」
“My eggs are runny.”
「これは ちゃんとした めだまやきよ」おばあちゃんは いいました。
“These are proper sunny-side-up eggs,” Grandma said.
「ぼく めだまやき なんか いらない」こぶたくんは いいました。
“I don’t want sunny-side-up eggs,” said Oliver.
「かあさんは いつも チーズいりの いりたまごだ」
“Mom always makes scrambled eggs with cheese.”
おばあちゃんは、こぶたくんと いもうとの アマンダの ために チーズいりの いりたまごを つくりました。
Grandma made scrambled eggs with cheese for Oliver and Amanda,
でも じぶんは めだまやき をたべました。
but she ate the sunny-side-up eggs herself.
「きょうは、なにして あそびたい？」おばあちゃんは たずねました。
“What do you want to play today?” Grandma asked.
「ぼく くるまを はしらせる みちを つくる」と こぶたくん。
“I want to make roads for my cars,” said Oliver.
「いっしょに つくってあげる」おばあちゃんは いいました。
“I’ll help you make them,” Grandma offered.
「だめ」と こぶたくん。
“No,” said Oliver.
「かあさんは いつも いえの なかに いるんだ。おばあちゃんも いえにいて おそうじするの」
“Mom always stays inside the house. You should stay inside and clean too, Grandma.”
おひるに おばあちゃんは、ピーナッツバターの サンドイッチを つくってくれました。
At lunch, Grandma made peanut butter sandwiches.
「ピーナッツバターが おおすぎる」こぶたくんは いいました。
“There’s too much peanut butter,” said Oliver.
「かあさんなら そんなに たくさんは いれない」
“Mom doesn’t use that much.”
「ピーナッツバターは おおいほど いい。わたしは ずっと そう おもっているの」と おばあちゃん。
“The more peanut butter, the better. That’s what I’ve always thought,” Grandma said.
こぶたくんは ひとくち たべてみました。
Oliver took a bite.
「もう おなか いっぱいだ。」
“I’m full already.”
ごはんが おわると、こぶたくんは じどうしゃを だしてきて、レースの コースを つくりました。
After lunch, Oliver got out his toy cars and built a racetrack.
それから つみきを だしてきて、まちを つくりました。
Then he built a town with blocks.
それから アマンダと ふたりで みんな こわして しまいました。
Then he and Amanda knocked everything down together.
「こんどは、えでも かこうかな」と こぶたくん。
“Maybe I’ll draw now,” Oliver said.
「そのまえに、おかたづけよ」と おばあちゃん。
“Clean up first,” Grandma said.
「てつだってえ」と こぶたくん。
“Help me,” Oliver pleaded.
「それは できないわ」と おばあちゃん。
“I can’t do that,” Grandma said.
「年を とっているから、ひざが だめなの」
“I’m too old, and my knees hurt.”
「かあさんなら いつも てつだってくれる。かあさん、きてよう」と こぶたくん。
“Mom always helps me. Mom, come here!” Oliver called out.
「おかあちゃーん」アマンダが なきだしました。
“Mommy!” Amanda started to cry.
ゆりいすに すわった おばあちゃんは、アマンダを ひざの うえに のせて やりました。
Grandma sat in the rocking chair and lifted Amanda onto her lap.
そして やさしい こえで うたを うたいました。
Then she began to sing gently.
「もっと」と アマンダ。
“More,” said Amanda.
おばあちゃんは ふなたびの うたを うたいました。
Grandma sang a song about a boat trip,
ぶたの かつらの うたを うたいました。
a song about a pig’s wig,
わにの せなかで ニコニコ している うたを うたいました。
and a song about a crocodile’s back with a big smile.
「かあさんは、こんなこと してくれなかった」と こぶたくん。
“Mom never did that,” Oliver said.
「ぼく こういうこと すきだ」
“I like this.”
「こぶたくんの おかたづけが すんだら、もっと うたいましょ」おばあちゃんは いいました。
“When you finish cleaning up, we’ll sing some more,” Grandma said.
かあさんが かえってきたとき、三にんは まだ うたって いましたよ。
When Mom came home, the three of them were still singing.
「たのしかった？」かあさんは たずねました。
“Did you have fun?” Mom asked.
「うん」と こぶたくん。
“Yeah,” said Oliver.
「おばあちゃんは りっぱな めだまやきと ピーナッツバター たっぷりの サンドイッチを つくってくれた。ぼくは じぶんで おかたづけしたし、ぼくたち みんなで うたも うたったの」
“Grandma made wonderful sunny-side-up eggs and sandwiches with lots of peanut butter. I cleaned up all by myself, and we all sang songs together.”
「とっても たのしかった みたいね」かあさんは いいました。
“Sounds like you had a great time,” Mom said.

Chapter 5: Bedtime
「かあさん」と こぶたの オリバーくん。
"Mom," said Oliver the little pig.
「なあに」と かあさん。
"Yes?" replied Mom.
「ぼく ねむれない」と こぶたくん。
"I can't sleep," said the little pig.
「あら、どうしてかしら」と かあさん。
"Oh, why not?" asked Mom.
「なんだか、さむいみたい」と こぶたくん。
"I feel kind of cold," said the little pig.
かあさんは、ふとんを ひっぱりあげて くれました。
Mom pulled up the blanket for him.
「おやすみ、こぶたくん」かあさんは、ドアを しめて でていきました。
"Goodnight, little pig," Mom said as she closed the door and went out.
「かあさん」と こぶたくん。
"Mom," called the little pig.
「なあに」と かあさん。
"Yes?" replied Mom.
「ぼく ねむれない」と こぶたくん。
"I can't sleep," said the little pig.
「あら、どうしてかしら」と かあさん。
"Oh, why not?" asked Mom.
「なんだか、のどが かわいているみたい。お水を いっぱい もってきて」と こぶたくん。
"I feel kind of thirsty. Can you bring me a glass of water?" asked the little pig.
「おねがいします は」と かあさん。
"Say 'please,'" said Mom.
「おねがいします」と こぶたくん。
"Please," said the little pig.
かあさんは 水を もってきてくれました。
Mom brought him some water.
「おやすみ、こぶたくん」
"Goodnight, little pig."
かあさんは、ドアを しめて でていきました。
Mom closed the door and went out.
「かあさん」と こぶたくん。
"Mom," called the little pig.
「なあに」と かあさん。
"Yes?" replied Mom.
「ぼく ねむれない」と こぶたくん。
"I can't sleep," said the little pig.
「まあ、どうしてかしら」と かあさん。
"Well, why not?" asked Mom.
「なんだか、さびしいみたい」と こぶたくん。
"I feel kind of lonely," said the little pig.
「ぼく どうぶつさんたちと いっしょに ねたい」
"I want to sleep with my stuffed animals."
「ライオンさんが いるじゃない」と かあさん。
"You have the lion, don't you?" said Mom.
「もっと たくさんと だよ」こぶたくんは いいました。
"I need more," said the little pig.
かあさんは ぞうや あひるや おおきな くまや あかちゃんぐままで もって きてくれました。
Mom brought him the elephant, the duck, the big bear, and even the baby bear.
「おやすみ、こぶたくん」かあさんは、ドアを しめて でていきました。
"Goodnight, little pig," Mom said as she closed the door and went out.
「かあさん」と こぶたくん。
"Mom," called the little pig.
「なあに」と かあさん。
"Yes?" replied Mom.
「ぼく ねむれない」と こぶたくん。
"I can't sleep," said the little pig.
「まあ、どうしてかしら」と かあさん。
"Oh, why not?" asked Mom.
「なんだか あついみたい」と こぶたくん。
"I feel hot," said the little pig.
「みみが むずむずするのに、かくことも できない。おふとんが、ぎゅっと なって うごけないもん」
"My ears are itchy, and I can't even scratch them. The blanket is too tight, and I can't move!"
「ねむったら みみなんて」とかあさん。
"If you fall asleep, your ears won't feel itchy," said Mom.
「むずむず なんか しないわよ」
"They won't itch at all."
そして、かけぶとんを はずしてやりました。
She took off the blanket for him.
こぶたくんは みみを かきました。
The little pig scratched his ears.
「おやすみ、こぶたくん」かあさんは、ドアを しめて でていきました。
"Goodnight, little pig," Mom said as she closed the door and went out.
「かあさん」と こぶたくん。
"Mom," called the little pig.
「なあに」と かあさん。
"Yes?" replied Mom.
「ぼく ねむれない」と こぶたくん。
"I can't sleep," said the little pig.
「あら、どうしてかしら」と かあさん。
"Oh, why not?" asked Mom.
「まだ さびしいみたい」と こぶたくん。
"I still feel lonely," said the little pig.
「ぼく しっかり だいてほしい」
"I want a big hug."
かあさんは、こぶたくんを しっかり だいて やりました。
Mom gave the little pig a tight hug.
「かあさんも そうしたかったのよ」
"I wanted to do this too," said Mom.
こぶたくんも、かあさんを しっかり だきました。
The little pig hugged Mom tightly as well.
「ぐうーう」と こぶたくん。
"Groooan," went the little pig.
「それ なあに？」と かあさん。
"What was that?" asked Mom.
「これって くまだっこ」と こぶたくん。
"This is my bear hug," said the little pig.
かあさんは あくびを しました。
Mom yawned.
「だきあって いたら ねむく なって しまったわ」
"Holding you like this makes me sleepy."
こぶたくんも あくびを しました。
The little pig yawned, too.
「ぼくも」
"Me too."
かあさんは また こぶたくんを くみました。
Mom tacked the little pig in again.
「おやすみ、こぶたくん」と かあさん。
"Goodnight, little pig," said Mom.
「おやすみ、かあさん」と こぶたくん。
"Goodnight, Mom," said the little pig.
まだ かあさんが ドアを しめないうちに、もう こぶたくんは ねむっていました。
Before Mom could even close the door, the little pig had already fallen asleep.
