(Snow White)
むかし、しらゆきひめと いう うつくしい おひめさまが いました。
Once upon a time, there was a beautiful princess named Snow White.
ところが、おかあさんの おきさきは、まま母でした。しらゆきひめが うつくしいのを ねたんで いました。
However, her mother had passed away, and her stepmother, the queen, was envious of Snow White’s beauty.
おきさきは、ふしぎな かがみを もっていて、自分の すがたを うつしながら、「かがみよ かがみ、だれが いちばん きれい。」と、聞くのです。
The queen had a magical mirror, and every day she would gaze into it and ask, "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the most beautiful?"
すると、かがみは 答えるのでした。「あなたも きれいだが、しらゆきひめは、もっと きれい。」
The mirror would reply, "You are beautiful, my queen, but Snow White is more beautiful."
まま母は、おこって、家来に 言いつけました。「しらゆきひめを 森に つれていって、ころして しまいなさい。」
The stepmother, filled with rage, ordered a servant to take Snow White into the forest and kill her.
家来は、しらゆきひめを、森に つれて いきましたが。が、ころすのは かわいそうだと 思って、にがして やりました。
The servant took Snow White to the forest, but the servant, pitying the princess, spared her life and let her escape.
しらゆきひめは、森の 中を にげて いきました。
Snow White fled deep into the forest and
すると、一けんの 小さな 家が ありました。
eventually came across a small cottage.
家の 中には、小さな テーブルが ありました。テーブルの 上には、七まいの おさらと、七つの ナイフ、フォーク、スプーンが おいて ありました。
Inside, she found a tiny table set with seven plates, knives, forks, and spoons.
しらゆきひめは、どの おさらからも、少しずつ ごちそうを 食べました。
She took a little from each plate.
かべぎわに、七つの ベッドが ありました。じゅんばんに ねて みましたが、七ばんめのが いちばん 気に 入りました。ひめは、よこに なって、朝まで 目を さましませんでした。
Snow White tried out the seven small beds lined up against the wall. The seventh bed was the most comfortable, and she fell asleep.
くらく なってから、七にんの こびとが もどって きました。
That evening, seven dwarfs who lived in the cottage returned home.
さあ、たいへんです。
They noticed immediately that something was wrong.
「だれだ、ぼくの いすに こしかけたのは。」
"Who sat in my chair?"
「さらが うごかして ある。」
"Who moved my plate?"
「パンが かじられた。」
"Who nibbled my bread?"
「野さいが 食べられた。」
"Who ate my vegetables?"
「ナイフが ころがって いる。」
"Who overturned my knife?"
「フォークが さかさまだ。」
"Who reversed my fork?"
「コップの 水が からっぽだ。」
"Who drank my water?"
そして、ベッドで ねて いる しらゆきひめを、見つけました。
Finally, they discovered Snow White asleep in one of their beds.
朝に なって、こびとたちは、しらゆきひめを おこしました。
The next morning, the dwarfs woke Snow White and asked,
「どうして、ここに 来たの？」
"Why are you here?"
しらゆきひめは、わけを 話しました。
Snow White explained everything,
すると、こびとたちは、「かわいそうに。それなら、いつまでも ここに いるが いい。その かわり、そうじ、せんたく、おりょうり作りを して くれないか。」
and the dwarfs took pity on her. "You can stay with us, but you must do the cleaning, washing, and cooking."
しらゆきひめは、よろこんで、こびとたちの 家に いる ことに なりました。
Snow White happily agreed to live with the dwarfs.
さて、おしろの おきさきです。
Meanwhile, the queen in the castle,
しらゆきひめを ころしたので、あんしんして、かがみに 聞きました。
believing Snow White to be dead, asked her mirror once more,
「かがみよ かがみ、だれが いちばん きれい。」
"Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the most beautiful?"
すると かがみは、「あなたも きれいだが、山の むこうに いる しらゆきひめは もっと きれい。」
The mirror replied, "You are beautiful, my queen, but Snow White beyond the mountains is more beautiful."
おきさきは、びっくりしました。「まだ、生きて いたのか。」
The queen was shocked and furious to learn Snow White was alive.
おきさきは、きたない かっこうを して、出かけました。森を ぬけ、山を こえて、こびとの 家に つくと、「きれいな ひもを かっとくれ。」と 言うと、出てきた しらゆきひめを、かたく しばって、いきが できないように してしまいました。
Disguised as an old peddler, she ventured to the dwarfs' cottage and tied a beautiful ribbon tightly around Snow White, cutting off her breath.
「これで よし。」
"Now you'll stay dead," she sneered.
七にんの こびとは、帰ってきて びっくり。すぐに ひもを 切って、ひめを たすけました。
But when the dwarfs returned, they cut the ribbon and saved Snow White.
「知らない 人が 来ても、けっして ドアを あけちゃ いけないよ。」
"Don't open the door to a stranger."
おしろに 帰った おきさきは、また かがみに 聞きました。
Again, the queen asked the mirror
「かがみよ かがみ、だれが いちばん きれい。」
"Mirror, mirror, who is the most beautiful?"
ところが、こんども、しらゆきひめが きれいと 答えたのです。
once more, it named Snow White.
おきさきは、どくの くしを 作って、しらゆきひめの ところに 行きました。そして、ひめの かみに、くしを つき立てたので、ひめは たおれて しまいました。
Enraged, the queen crafted a poisoned comb, placed it in Snow White's hair, and left her for dead.
夕方 帰った 七にんの こびとは、「だから、ドアを あけては いけないって 言ったじゃないか。」
But the dwarfs returned, said "we told you not to open the door to a stanger."
しらゆきひめの 頭から、くしを ぬくと、ひめは 生きかえりました。
They removed the comb, saving her life again.
おしろの おきさきは、また かがみに ききました。
The queen at the castle asked the mirror once again.
こんども、しらゆきひめが いちばん きれいと 答えます。
This time, too, the mirror answered that Snow White was the most beautiful of all.
「ようし、もう、がまんが できない。」
"All right, I can’t stand this anymore!" she said.
おきさきは、どくの りんごを こしらえました。
The queen made a poisoned apple.
こんどは、しらゆきひめも 用心して、まどから 顔を 出しただけでした。
This time, Snow White was cautious and only stuck her head out of the window.
おきさきは、どくりんごを 半分に わって、「こっちの 赤いほうを お食べ。わたしは、白い ほうを 食べる。いっしょに 食べるんだから、しんぱい いらないよ。」
The queen split the poisoned apple in half and said, "Eat this red half. I’ll eat the white half. We’re eating it together, so you have nothing to worry about."
ところが、赤い ほうにだけ、どくが 入って いました。
However, only the red half was poisoned.
ひめは、すぐに しんで しまいました。
Snow White immediately fell dead.
七人の こびとにも、たすける ことが できませんでした。
Even the seven dwarfs couldn’t save her.
七人の こびとは、かなしみました。
The seven dwarfs were heartbroken.
なきながら、しらゆきひめを ガラスの ひつぎに おさめました。
Crying, they placed Snow White in a glass coffin.
それから、うらの 山の 上において、「かわりばんこで、ひめを まもろう。」と、言いました。
Then, they placed it on the hill behind the house and said, "We will take turns watching over her."
こうして、しらゆきひめは、まるで ねむって いるように よこに なって いました。
And so, Snow White lay there as if she were only sleeping.
生きている ときと、少しも かわらず、きれいでした。
She was just as beautiful as when she was alive.
あるとき、王子さまが、山の 中に まいこんで きました。
One day, a prince wandered into the mountains.
七人の こびとの 家に 来て、とめて もらいました。
He came to the house of the seven dwarfs and asked to stay with them.
王子さまは、ガラスの ひつぎを 見ました。
The prince saw the glass coffin.
「なんと うつくしい ひめだろう。わたしに ゆずって くれないか。」
"What a beautiful princess. Please let me take her with me," he said.
こびとは もちろん ことわりました。
The dwarfs initially refused, of course.
が、あまり ねっしんなので、「たいせつに して くださいよ。」と 言って、ゆずることに しました。
But he was so earnest that they finally agreed, saying, "Please take good care of her."
王子さまは、さっそく 家来を よんで、ひつぎを はこばせました。
The prince immediately called his servants to carry the coffin.
すると、家来が つまずいた とたん、しらゆきひめの のどから どくりんごの かすが とび出しました。
As one of the servants stumbled, a piece of the poisoned apple dislodged from Snow White’s throat.
ひめは、生きかえりました。
Snow White came back to life.
「あ、わたし、どこに いるの？」
"Oh, where am I?" she asked.
「あなたの ことが、だれよりも すきな、ぼくの そばです。」
"You are with me, the one who loves you more than anyone," the prince said.
こうして、二人は、めでたく けっこんしきを あげることに なりました。
And so, the two happily prepared for their wedding.
おいわいには、おきさきも 出なくては なりません。
Even the queen had to attend the celebration.
「かがみよ かがみ。だれが いちばん きれい。」
"Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the most beautiful"
かがみは、もちろん 答えました。
The mirror, of course, replied,
「わかい おきさきが いちばん きれい。」
"The young bride is the most beautiful."
おきさきは、こんどこそと 思って、しきに 出かけました。
The queen, determined this time, went to the wedding.
が、きゅうに、くつが 火のように やけて きて、あついので、ぴょんぴょん はねまわり、しぬまで おどって いなければ なりませんでした。
But suddenly, her shoes burned like fire, so hot that she had to hop around, and she was forced to dance until she died.
