そらうで The Boastful Strength
ある ゆうがたのことです。
じゅじんが、けらいの たろうを よびつけ、いいました。
「あした、きゃくが くることに なった。これから さかなを かいに いってくれ。」
「はい。あのー、でも、もう じき ひが しずむので、あしたに した ほうが.....。」
「おまえは いつも つよいのを じまんしているから、くらくても へいきだろう。わしの かたなを かすから、いってまいれ。」
「いつも つよがっている せいで、めんどうなことに なった。」
たろうは、しぶしぶ でかけました。
しばらく いくと、ひが くれてきました。
「くらくて こわいなあ。」
たろうは びくびくしながら やまみちに はいっていきました。
すると.....。
「ぎゃ！ おおおとこだ！ おおおとこさま！ わたしは なにも もっていません。どうか いのちだけは おたすけください！」
たろうは じめんに はいつくばり、ふるえる こえで たのみました。
ところが おおおとこは なにも いいません。
たろうが おそるおそる かおを あげると.......。
おおおとこだと おもったのは、きの しげみでした。
「やれやれ、わたしは とんだ おくびょうものだ。」
ところが しばらく いくと......、
「わわ！ ひとが おおぜい こっちに くる！」
「この かたなを あげます！ ですから、どうか いのちだけは おたすけを！」
たろうは、おそわれると おもって、ぺこぺこ あたまを さげました。
この ようすを、たろうの しゅじんが じーっと みていました。
たろうが たよりないので、こっそり ついてきたのです。
（あいつは まつの きに むかって、なにを いっておるのだ！ あれは わしの かたなでは ないか！）
しゅじんは いつまでも あたまを さげている たろうから、かたなを さっ！ と、とりあげました。
そして はらだちまぎれに たろうの せなかを、おうぎで ぴしゃりと たたき、おこって かえっていきました。
（ああ、せなかを ぱっさり きられて、しんでしまった。）
と、たろうは おもいました。
（よく きれる かたなは いたく ないと いうが、ほんとうに いたく なかった。......ここが、あのよと いうところか。おや、すこし あかるく なってきたぞ。）
たろうは、やまの むこうに のぼった つきを、しばらく ぼんやりと ながめていました。
「は！ もしかすると.....。」
たろうは おきあがって せなかを さわってみました。
「なんだ、きられてないぞ！それに、どうやら わたしは しんでないようだ。」
そして つきあかりを たよりに、しゅじんの かたなを さがしました。
「みつからないなあ。でも うまいこと いいわけを すれば いいか。」
そう いって、たろうは そのまま ひきかえしました。
たろうが うちに かえると、しゅじんが、
「ごくろうで あった。かってきた さかなは どう した？」
と たずねました。
「さかなどころでは ありません！ たいへんな めに あったのですから。」
たろうは、えらく こうふんした ようすで はなしはじめました。
「まず 四、五にんの わるものに とりかこまれたのです。」
「ほう、それで どう した？」
「わたしは すこしも あわてず、『そこを どきたまえ！』と どなりましたので、わるものは おびえて にげていきました。」
「すると、こんどは おおおとこが あらわれました。わたしは かたなを すらりと ぬき、すぱーっと くびを きりおとしてやりました。」
たろうは おくびょうなくせに、うその うでじまん、「そらうで」を いうのです。
しゅじんは、それを しっていたので、
「ほほう。そりゃあ たいしたものだ。」
と かんしんする ふりを して きいていました。
「ほっと していると、あくとうが 七、八にん あらわれました。」
「そんなに たくさん！」
「いや 百にんは いたでしょうか。『やいやい、わたしは つよくて ゆうめいな たろうであるぞ！』と いって、かたなを ぶんまわしました。すると、てきは くもの こを ちらすように にげていきました。」
「ところが こんどは、やが つぎから つぎへと とんできます。わたしは さっと かわしたり、ひょいと とびこえたり、かたなで たたきおとしたり、いや もう たいへん。はっはっは。」
「やが なくなったと みえ、こんどは とんでもなく ながい やりを えい、えい、と ついてきました。」
「こんどは やりか。」
「みぎに くるのを ちょちょいと はらい、ひだりに くるのを しょしょいと はらい している うちに、もっていた かたなが まっぷたつに おれました。おれた かたなは、なげつけて かえってまいりましたが、かんがえると おしいことを しました。」
しゅじんは、「いや、きに することは ない。おまえが でていった あと、ちょうど かたなを かったのだ。みせてやろう。」
と さっき とりあげた かたなを たろうの めの まえに さしだしました。
ぎょっとする たろうに、しゅじんは どなりました。
「おまえが、いのちだけは おたすけを、と さしだした かたなを、わしが とりあげたのだ。よく みろ！ これは おまえが、おれたと いう かたなだろうが！」
たろうは、（しまった！）と おもいましたが、すぐに きを とりなおして いいました。
「まさに、これは おれた かたな！ さては さっさと なおって、わたしより はやく とんで かえったのですなあ。さすが すばらし かたなは ちがいます。おそれいりました。」
これには しゅじんも あきれるのを とおりこして かんしんしてしまい、
「おまえの そらうでにも おそれいった。」
と おもわず あたまを さげたと いうことです。

One evening, the lord called his servant Taro and said:
"Tomorrow, we will have guests. Go buy some fish."
"Yes, but since it's already getting dark, it might be better to go tomorrow..."
"You always boast about your strength, so you should be fine even in the dark. I'll lend you my sword. Go now."
"Because of my constant bragging, I've ended up with a troublesome task."
Reluctantly, Taro set out.
After a while, the sun set.
"It's dark and scary."
Taro nervously entered the mountain path.
Then...
"Yikes! A giant! Please, Mr. Giant, I have nothing on me. Please spare my life!"
Taro crawled on the ground and pleaded in a trembling voice.
However, the giant said nothing.
When Taro fearfully looked up...
What he thought was a giant was just the thicket of a tree.
"Phew, I'm such a coward."
But after walking a bit further...
"Oh no! A group of people is coming this way!"
"I'll give you this sword! Just please spare my life!"
Thinking he was about to be attacked, Taro bowed his head repeatedly.
His lord, who had secretly followed him, watched this scene.
Finding Taro unreliable, the lord had decided to follow him quietly.
(What is he doing talking to a pine tree? Isn't that my sword!)
The lord swiftly took back his sword from the constantly bowing Taro.
Then, in a fit of rage, he smacked Taro's back with a fan and angrily returned home.
(Oh, I've been slashed in the back and died.)
Taro thought.
(They say a well-sharpened sword doesn't hurt, and it's true; it didn't hurt at all. Is this the afterlife? Oh, it's getting a bit brighter.)
For a while, Taro gazed blankly at the moon rising over the mountain.
"Wait! Maybe..."
Taro got up and touched his back.
"I'm not cut! And it seems I'm not dead either."
Then, using the moonlight, he searched for his lord's sword.
"I can't find it... Well, I'll come up with a good excuse."
Saying this, Taro headed back.
When Taro returned home, the lord asked:
"Good job. What happened to the fish you bought?"
"It wasn't about the fish! I had a terrible experience!"
Taro, looking very excited, started to tell his story.
"First, I was surrounded by four or five villains."
"Oh, so what did you do?"
"I didn't panic at all and shouted, 'Get out of my way!' The villains got scared and ran away."
"Then, a giant appeared. I drew my sword and swiftly cut off his head."
Despite his cowardice, Taro boasted with his "empty boast," or "sorau-de."
The lord, knowing this, pretended to be impressed.
"Wow, that's impressive."
"As I was relieved, seven or eight bandits appeared."
"That many!"
"No, it must have been a hundred. I shouted, 'I am the famous strong Taro!' and swung my sword around. The enemies scattered like spiders."
"Then, arrows started flying at me one after another. I dodged them quickly, jumped over some, and struck others down with my sword. It was quite the ordeal. Ha ha ha."
"When the arrows stopped, they came at me with incredibly long spears."
"Spears this time."
"I deflected the ones coming from the right and left with ease, but then my sword broke in half. I threw the broken sword and returned, but in hindsight, it was a shame."
The lord said, "No need to worry. Right after you left, I bought a new sword. Let me show you."
He presented the sword he had taken from Taro earlier.
Taro was shocked.
The lord yelled at Taro.
"I took the sword you offered when you begged for your life. Look closely! This is the sword you claimed had broken!"
Taro thought, (Oops!) but quickly regained his composure and said:
"Indeed, this is the broken sword! It must have repaired itself and flown back faster than me. A truly marvelous sword indeed. I'm impressed."
The lord, more than astonished, was actually impressed and said:
"I am impressed by your boastful strength."
And that's the story.
