むかし、ある 山おくに、きこりの ふうふが すんで いました。
Once upon a time, in a mountain village, there lived a woodcutter and his wife.
山おくの 一けんや なので、まいばんのように たぬきが やって きて、いたづらを しました。
Because their house was deep in the mountains, a raccoon dog would come by every night and play pranks.
そこで、きこりは わなを しかけました。
So the woodcutter set a trap.
ある 月の きれいな ばんの こと、おかみさんは、糸車を まわして、糸を つむいで いました。
One beautiful moonlit night, the wife was spinning thread on her spinning wheel.

キークルクル キークルクル

ふと 気が つくと、やぶれしょうじの あなから、二つの くりくりした 目玉が、こちらを のぞいて いました。
Suddenly, she noticed a pair of round eyes peering through a hole in the torn paper sliding door.
糸車が キークルクルと まわるに つれて、二つの 目玉も、くるりくるりと まわりました。
As the spinning wheel turned, the two round eyes also spun round and round.
そして、月の あかるい しょうじに、糸車を まわす まねを する たぬきの かげが うつりました。
And in the bright moonlight on the sliding door, the shadow of a raccoon dog imitating the spinning motion appeared.
おかみさんは、おもわず ふき出しそうに なりましたが、だまって 糸車を まわして いました。
The wife almost burst out laughing but kept spinning the wheel in silence.
それからと いう もの、たぬきは、まいばん まいばん やって きて、糸車を まわす まねを くりかえしました。
From that night on, the raccoon dog came every night and mimicked the spinning motion.
「いたずらもんだが、かわいいな。」
"What a mischievous but cute little thing," she thought.
ある ばん、こやの うらで、キャーッと いう さけびごえが しました。
One night, a scream came from behind the shed.
おかみさんが こわごわ いって みると、いつもの たぬきが、わなに かかって いました。
When the wife went to check, there was the usual raccoon dog caught in the trap.
「かわいそうに。わなになんか かかるんじゃ ないよ。たぬきじるに されて しまうで。」
"Poor thing. You shouldn’t get caught in such a trap, or you'll be made into raccoon dog soup."
おかみさんは、そう いって、たぬきを にがして やりました。
She said this and released the raccoon dog.
やがて、山の 木の はが おちて、ふゆが やって きました。
Eventually, as the leaves of the mountain trees fell, winter came.
ゆきが ふりはじめると、きこりの ふうふは、村へ 下りて いきました。
When the snow began to fall, the woodcutter and his wife went down to the village.
はるに なって、また、きこりの ふうふは、山おくの こやに もどって きました。
In spring, the couple returned to their mountain cottage.
とを あけた とき、おかみさんは、あっと おどろきました。
When the wife opened the door, she was astonished.
いたの間に、白い 糸の たばが、山のように つんで あったのです。
There was a mountain of white thread bundles piled up in the middle of the room.
そおうえ、ほこりだらけの はずの 糸車には、まきかけた 糸まで かかって います。
Moreover, the spinning wheel, which should have been covered in dust, had thread already wound around it.
「はあて、ふしぎな。どう した こっちゃ。」
"Well, this is strange. What on earth happened?"
おかみさんは、そう おもいながら、土間で ごはんを たきはじめました。
the wife wondered as she started to cook rice in the kitchen.

と、糸車の まわる 音が、きこえて きました。
The sound of the spinning wheel turning reached her ears.
びっくりして ふりむくと、いたどの かげから、ちゃいろの しっぽが ちらりと みえました。
Surprised, she turned around and saw a brown tail peeking from behind the sliding door.
そっと のぞくと、いつかの たぬきが、じょうずな 手つきで、糸を つむいで いるのでした。
Peeking quietly, she saw the same raccoon dog skillfully spinning thread.
たぬきは、つむぎおわると、こんどは、いつも おかみさんが して いた とおりに、たばねて わきに つみかさねました。
When the raccoon dog finished spinning, it bundled the thread and stacked it neatly, just as the wife used to do.
たぬきは、ふいに、おかみさんが のぞいて いるのに 気が つきました。
Suddenly, the raccoon dog noticed the wife watching it.
たぬきは、ぴょこんと そとに とび下りました。
The raccoon dog jumped down,
そして、うれしくて たまらないと いうように、ぴょんぴょこ おどりながら かえって いきましたとさ。
And as if overjoyed, hopped away, dancing happily.
