むかし、ある うみべの 村に、うらしまたろう と いう わかものが すんでいました。
Once upon a time, in a village by the sea, there lived a young man named Urashima Taro.
うらしまたろうは まい日、ふねに のって うみに でては さかなを とっていました。
Every day, Urashima Taro would go out to sea on his boat to catch fish.
そうして とった さかなや かいを 町で うり、おかあさんと ふたり、まずしいながらも くらしていたのです。
He would then sell the fish and shellfish he caught in town, and though he lived in poverty with his mother, they got by.
ある日の こと、うらしまたろうは、いつものように うみに でていました。
One day, as usual, Urashima Taro went out to sea.
どうしたことか、その日は、すこしも さかなが かかりません。
However, that day, he couldn’t catch a single fish.
ゆうがたまで りょうを して、ようやく なんびきかの さかなしか とれませんでした。
He fished until evening and managed to catch only a few fish.
がっかりして うらしまたろうが あるいていきますと はまべで こどもたちが さわいでいました。
Feeling disappointed, Urashima Taro walked along the shore and saw some children making a commotion.
みると、こどもたちは かめを つかまえ、いじめています。
When he looked closer, he saw that the children had caught a turtle and were teasing it.
「おお、おお、かわいそうな ことを.....」
"Oh no, how cruel…"
「これ、どうして かめを いじめるのじゃ。はなして おやり。」
"Hey, why are you bullying that turtle? Let it go."
うらしまたろうが こう いっても、こどもたちは わいわい するばかりで いうことを ききません。
Even though Urashima Taro spoke up, the children continued their noise and wouldn’t listen.
「それでは、この さかなを おまえたちに あげるから かめと とりかえてくれないか。」
"In that case, how about I give you these fish in exchange for the turtle?"
こどもたちは 大よろこびで さかなを わけあうと、かけさって いきました。
The children were overjoyed and quickly divided the fish among themselves before running off.
さて、うらしまたろうは、かめを うみへ にがして あげました。
Urashima Taro then released the turtle back into the sea.
「やれやれ、あぶない ところだった。さあ、はやく おかえり。二どと つかまるんじゃ ないぞ。」
"Phew, that was close. Go on now, and don’t get caught again."
かめは、うれしそうに およぎはじめました。
The turtle seemed happy as it swam away.
そして、うらしまたろうの ほうを ふりかえり ふりかえり して いましたが、やがて なみの なかへと みえなくなって いきました。
It turned back again and again to look at Urashima Taro before disappearing into the waves.
つぎの日。うらしまたろうが さかなを つっていると、うみのなかから かめが あらわれ、
The next day, while Urashima Taro was fishing, the turtle appeared from the sea and called out,
「うらしまさん、うらしまさん。」
と よびました。
"Urashima-san, Urashima-san."
うらしまたろうが おどろいていると、かめは こう いうのです。
As Urashima Taro stood there, surprised, the turtle said,
「わたしは、きのうの かめです。たすけて いただいた おれいに、りゅうぐうへ おつれします。どうぞ、せなかに おのりください。」
"I am the turtle you saved yesterday. To thank you, I will take you to Ryugu, the Dragon Palace. Please, climb onto my back."
うらしまたろうは、かめの せなかに のりました。
Urashima Taro climbed onto the turtle’s back.
かめは、ぐんぐん およいで うみの なかへと すすんでいきます。
The turtle swam steadily, heading deeper into the sea.
ふしぎな ことに うみの なかだと いうのに すこしも くるしく ありません。
Strangely, even though they were underwater, Urashima Taro didn’t feel uncomfortable at all.
いろとりどりの さかなの むれが、うらしまたろうの まわりを およいで いきます。
Schools of colorful fish swam around Urashima Taro.
そうして、さんごの 森を とおり ぬけていきますと.....
やがて、金色に ひかりかがやく ごてんが すがたを あらわしました。
They passed through a coral forest, and soon a golden, shining palace appeared.
これが、りゅうぐうでした。
This was Ryugu, the Dragon Palace.
ごてんの まえでは、おとひめさまが でむかえていて くれました。
At the front of the palace, Princess Otohime was waiting to greet him.
「ようこそ、おいで くださいました。かめを たすけて いただいて ありがとう。」
"Welcome, and thank you for saving the turtle."
（なんて、きれいな ひと なんだろう.....）
(What a beautiful person…)
おとひめさまの あまりの うつくしさに うらしまたろうは こえも だせません。
Urashima Taro was so overwhelmed by the beauty of Princess Otohime that he couldn’t even speak.
ごてんの なかに あんないされると、みたことも ないような ごちそうが よういされていました。
When he was guided inside the palace, he saw a feast like nothing he had ever seen before.
「さあ、めしあがれ。」
"Please, enjoy,"
おとひめさまが、おさけを すすめて くれました。
said Princess Otohime, offering him some sake.
やがて、おんがくが ながれだすと、うつくしい 女のひとたちが おどり はじめました。
Soon, music began to play, and beautiful women started dancing.
うらしまたろうは、ただ うっとりと ながめつづけます。
Urashima Taro could only watch, mesmerized.
また べつの日には、「春夏秋冬のへや」に あんない して もらいました。
On another day, he was shown to the "Room of Four Seasons."
そこでは、ひとつの へやで さくらが さきほこっていたかと おもうと、べつの へやでは、夏の 日ざしの なかで ふるように せみが ないているのです。
In one room, cherry blossoms were in full bloom, while in another, cicadas were chirping as if it were summer.
あかく いろづいた もみじに みとれて いると、となりの へやは いちめんの ゆきげしき。
As he admired the red leaves of autumn, the next room revealed a winter wonderland.
うらしまたろうは、すっかり 心を うばわれて しまいました。
Urashima Taro was completely captivated.
うらしまたろうは なにもかも わすれて、ゆめのように まい日を すごしました。
He forgot everything and spent his days like a dream.
ところが ある日、ふと おかあさんや 村の ことを おもいだし、その とたん、なつかしくて たまらなく なってきました。
However, one day, he suddenly remembered his mother and the village. At that moment, he felt a deep longing.
「すっかり おせわに なりましたが、もう いえに かえらなければ なりません。」
"I have received much hospitality, but I must return home now."
うらしまたろうが こう いうと、おとひめさまは、とても かなしそうな かおを しました。
When Urashima Taro said this, Princess Otohime looked very sad.
やがて おとひめさまは、うるしぬりの はこを もってきて いいました。
Eventually, Princess Otohime brought out a lacquered box and said,
「いつまでも いて いただきたかったのですが、しかたありません。どうか、 この たまてばこを おもちください。わたしだと おもって たいせつに して くださいね。でも この はこは けっして あけては いけませんよ。」
"I wished you could stay forever, but I understand. Please, take this ‘tamatebako’ (treasure box). Keep it with you and think of me, but whatever you do, do not open it."
うらしまたろうは、よろこんで たまてばこを うけとりました。
Urashima Taro gladly accepted the tamatebako.
うらしまたろうは たまてばこを かかえ、ふたたび かめの せなかに またがりました。
He carried the tamatebako and once again rode on the turtle’s back.
「さようなら！」
"Goodbye!"
うらしまたろうが 手を ふると、おとひめさまも いつまでも 手を ふりつづけて くれました。
As Urashima Taro waved, Princess Otohime continued to wave back until he was out of sight.
そうして 気がつくと、うらしまたろうは、なつかしい はまべに もどっていました。
When he realized it, Urashima Taro had returned to the familiar shore.
いそいで いえに かえってみるとー。
He hurried home, but—
どうしたことでしょう。
What had happened?
うらしまたろうの いえは なくなって いました。
Urashima Taro’s house was gone.
おかあさんも いなければ しっている ひとも だれも いません。
His mother wasn’t there, and he didn’t recognize anyone in the village.
村の ようすが すっかり かわって しまっていました。
The village had completely changed.
うらしまたろうは、村の ひとたちに はなしを きいて まわりました。
Urashima Taro asked the villagers about what had happened.
なんと、わずかの あいだ、りゅうぐうに いたと おもっていたのに、ほんとうは 三百年も たって いたのです。
To his shock, although he thought he had only been in Ryugu for a short time, three hundred years had passed.
うらしまたろうは とうほうに くれて はまべへ もどって きました。
Urashima Taro, feeling lost, returned to the shore.
（かえって こなければ よかった.....）

そして うらしまたろうは、さびしさの あまり、おとひめさまとの やくそくを やぶって、たまてばこを あけてしまったのです。
Overcome with loneliness, Urashima Taro broke his promise to Princess Otohime and opened the tamatebako.
そのとたん、はこの なかから しろい けむりが たちのぼり、うらしまたろうは、たちまち おじいさんの すがたに なってしまい ました。
In that instant, white smoke rose from the box, and Urashima Taro was transformed into an old man.
