うつぼざる
あるひ、とのさまが けらいを よんで、いいました。
「きょうは すばらしく いい てんきじゃ。のはらへ いって、かりを しようと おもうが、どうであろう？」
「けっこうな おもいつきだと おもいます。」
「では すぐに まいろう！」
とのさまと けらいは、ゆみやを もって でかけました。
「そとは じつに きもちが いいのう。」
とのさまが きげんよく あるいていると、ひとだかりが みえました。
「あれは なんじゃ？」
「さるが げいを みせる さるわわしで ございます。」
「おお、こちらへ きたぞ！ さるだ、さるだ！」
とのさまは おおよろこびで さるに かけよりました。
すると、さるは とつぜん とのさまに とびかかろうと しました。
さるまわしは、あわてて さるの ひもを ひきよせ、とのさまに おわびを しました。
「ふだんは おとなしい さるなのですが おとのさまの ごりっぱな ようすに おどろいたのでしょう。どうか おゆるしください。」
とのさまは、「よい、よい。ゆるしてやるぞ。」と にこやかに こたえました。
そして さるを まじまじと ながめてから、「さるまわしに たのみが あるが いいてくれるか？」と たずねました。
「わしは、やを いれる うつぼを、さるの けがわで つくりたいと おもっておった。この さるは、けなみも よい。きに いったから、わしに けがわを くれ。」
「さるまわし、わしは じょうだんを いっておるのでは ないぞ。はやく さるの けがわを わたせ。」
「おとのさま、この さるは いきております。けがわを はげば しんでしまいます。いくら おとのさまでも、そんな むちゃな たのみは きけません。」
「なんと！ わしの たのみを ことわるのと いうのか！」
とのさまは かおを まっかにして おこりました。
「いうことを きかないのなら、さるも さるまわしも いころしてやる！」
そう いうなり、ゆみやを かまえ、さるまわしに むけました。
「お、おまちください！ さるの けがわを おわたしします！」
「そう こなくては いけない。」
とのさＭは まんぞくそうに うなずきました。
「ですが、おとのさま。ゆみやで さるの けがわに きずが ついては、うつぼに つかえなくなります。わたしが つえで ひとうちして ころしましょう。」
さるまわしは、せめて くるしまない ほうほうで、さるを しなせて やりたいと おもったのです。
さるまわしあＨ さるを よんで、あたまを なぜました。
「さるきち。わたしは おまえを こざるの ときから そだて、いろいろと げいを おしえた。いまでは おまえの おかげで くらせるように なったのだから、ありがたく おもっているよ。
だが、あそこに いる おとのさまが、おまえの けがを よこさないと、おまえと わたしを いころすと おっしゃる。
かわいそうだが、おまえを ころすけれど、どうか わたしを うらまないで おくれよ。」
さるまわしは「ふうー.....。」と いきを はき、しばらく うつむいていましたが、とつぜん かおを あげ、つえを ふりあげました。
ところが さるは、 まえあしで その つえを すっと とりあげました。
そうして、つえを にぎり、ふねを こぐ しぐさを はじめました。
いっしょうけんめい ふねを こぐ げいを している さるを みて、さるまわしは たまらなくなり、こえを あげて なきだしました。
「じぶんを ころそうとする つえとも しらず、けいこだと おもったのだな。ああ、わたしは この さるを ころすなんて ことは、できません。さると いっしょに わたしも ころして ください！」
そう いって、さるを だきしめました。
さるまわしの はなしを きいて、とのさまも おもわず なきだしました。
「それは なんとも いじらしく、かわいそうな ことじゃ。ころしては ならん。いのちは たすける。」
「おとのさま、ほうんとうで ございますか？ ありがとうございます。」
さるまわしは よろこんで、さるにも いいました。
「さるきち、よかったな。いのちを たすけてもらったぞ。おまえも おとのさまに おれいを もうしあげなさい。」
さるは とのさまの まえに でると、きゃあきゃあ なきながら、おじぎを しました。
「わしに おれいを いったぞ。なるほど、りこうな さるじゃ。」
さるまわしは、こんどは さるに おいわいの おどりを おどらせました。
「ほう、うまいものじゃ。ほうびに、わしの おうぎと かたなと、この きものも やろう。」
とのさまは きものを ぬぐと、「まことに ゆかいじゃ。」と わらって、さると いっしょに おどりだしたと いうことです。

## The Monkey's Coat
One day, the lord called his retainers and said,
“Today is such a wonderful day. I’m thinking of going hunting in the fields. What do you think?”
“That sounds like a splendid idea.”
“Then let’s go right away!”
The lord and his retainers set off with their bows and arrows.
“The weather is truly delightful.”
As the lord was walking happily, he saw a crowd of people.
“What is that?”
“It’s a monkey show, my lord.”
“Oh, they’re coming this way! It’s a monkey, a monkey!”
The lord was delighted and ran towards the monkey.
Suddenly, the monkey tried to leap at the lord.
The monkey trainer hurriedly pulled the monkey back and apologized to the lord.
“This monkey is usually very tame, but it was probably startled by your magnificent appearance. Please forgive us.”
The lord smiled and replied, “It’s fine, I forgive you.”
Then he stared intently at the monkey and asked the trainer,
“I have a favor to ask. Will you listen?”
“I’ve always wanted to make an arrow case from monkey fur. This monkey has a fine coat. I like it, so give me its fur.”
“Monkey trainer, I’m not joking. Hand over the monkey’s fur quickly.”
“My lord, this monkey is alive. If we take its fur, it will die. No matter how much I respect you, I can’t grant such an unreasonable request.”
“What! Are you refusing my request?”
The lord’s face turned red with anger.
“If you don’t obey, I’ll kill both you and the monkey!”
With that, he prepared his bow and aimed at the monkey trainer.
“Please wait! I will give you the monkey’s fur!”
“That’s more like it.”
The lord nodded in satisfaction.
“But my lord, if you use the bow, the fur will be damaged and unusable for the arrow case. I will kill it with a stick.”
The monkey trainer thought at least this way the monkey wouldn’t suffer much.
The monkey trainer called the monkey and stroked its head.
“Sarukichi, I’ve raised you since you were a baby and taught you many tricks. Thanks to you, I can make a living now, and I’m grateful.
But that lord over there says he will kill both you and me if we don’t give him your fur.
It’s sad, but I have to kill you. Please don’t hold it against me.”
The monkey trainer took a deep breath and looked down for a moment, then suddenly raised his head and lifted the stick.
However, the monkey quickly took the stick with its front legs.
Then, holding the stick, it began to make rowing motions.
Seeing the monkey earnestly pretending to row a boat, the monkey trainer couldn’t hold back and started crying loudly.
“You don’t even know that this stick is meant to kill you. You think it’s just practice. Oh, I can’t kill this monkey. Please, kill me along with the monkey!”
He hugged the monkey tightly.
Hearing the monkey trainer’s story, the lord also started crying.
“That’s so touching and sad. We must not kill it. I will spare its life.”
“My lord, is that true? Thank you so much.”
The monkey trainer, overjoyed, told the monkey,
“Sarukichi, we’ve been saved. Thank the lord.”
The monkey stepped forward, screeching and bowing to the lord.
“It thanked me. What a clever monkey.”
The monkey trainer then made the monkey perform a celebratory dance.
“Impressive. As a reward, I’ll give you my fan, my sword, and this robe.”
The lord took off his robe, laughed heartily, and started dancing with the monkey.
