(Wakattasan's Ice Cream)
わかったさんは、クリーニングやさんです。
Wakattasan runs a dry cleaning shop.
小さなワゴンで、せんたくものの はいたつにでかけます。
She heads out with a small wagon to deliver freshly laundered clothes.
おとうさんが、「より道しないで、はやくかえってこいよ。」というと、
Her father says, “Don’t take any detours. Come straight home.”
「わかった、わかった。」
“I know, I know,” she replies.
おかあさんが、くしゃみをしながら、「かえりに、かぜぐすりを、かってきてちょうだい。」というと、
Her mother, sneezing, says, “Please pick up some cold medicine on your way back.”
「わかった、わかった。」
“I know, I know,” she says again.
それで、わかったさんと よばれるようになったのでした。
And that’s how she came to be called Wakattasan (“Ms. I-Know”).
きょうは、一丁目のカナリア・マンションから、まわりはじめることにしました。
Today, she decided to start her deliveries at Canary Mansion in Block 1.
ところが、エレベーターがこしょうしていたのです。
But—the elevator was broken!
ブルゾンをとどけるサトウさんは、三がいです。
Mrs. Satou, who ordered a blue jacket, lives on the third floor.
わかったさんは、かいだんをのぼっていきました。
So Wakattasan began climbing the stairs.
「やんなっちゃうな。」
“This is the worst,” she muttered.
やっと三がいにつこうとしたとき、かいだんの上で、黒ネコが、「ミュー、ワ。」なきました。
Just as she reached the third floor, a black cat meowed from the top of the stairs—“Mew, wa!”
なんだか、わかったさんを、からかってるみたいでした。
It felt like the cat was mocking her.
「なによ。ばかにしないで。」
“What?! Don’t make fun of me!”
わかったさんは、さげていたブルゾンを、さっとふりまわしました。
Wakattasan swung the blue jacket she was carrying.
すると、黒ネコは、おどろいて、わきのまどに、はねあがり、そのまま、そとにとびだしました。
The cat, startled, leapt onto a nearby window and jumped outside.
「あっ！」
“Ah!”
わかったさんは、まどから、下を見ました。
Wakattasan rushed to the window and looked down.
ネコのすがたが、きえていました。
The cat was gone.
「へんね。.....気もちわるい。」
“That’s strange... creepy.”
へんなことは、これでおわったわけではありませんでした。
But the weirdness didn’t end there.
サトウさんのへやのドアに、こんなはりがみが してあったのです。
On Mrs. Satou’s door, there was a note:
『しばらくるすにします。アイス市クリーム町3879にいます。サトウ』
“Out for a while. At 3879 Ice City, Cream Town. —Satou”
「えっ！」
“What?!”
わかったさんは、もう一ど、はりがみを見なおしました。
Wakattasan stared at the note again.
「しらないわ。こんなへんな町.....。」
“I’ve never heard of such a strange town…”
わからない町まで、ブルゾンを、とどけなければならないのでしょうか。
Does she really have to deliver the jacket all the way there?
でも、わからないところへは、いけません。
But she couldn’t go somewhere she didn’t know.
「もってかえろう。」かえりかけたときです。
“I’ll just take it back,” she said, turning to leave—
サトウさんのへやのドアのむこうで、イヌのなき声がしたのです。
—when she heard barking from behind the door.
ワン ワウウ ワン ルロロロロ
Woof! Ruff ruff! Rururururuff!
イヌをおいたまま、でかけてしまったのでしょうか。
Did Mrs. Satou leave her dog behind?
“「かわいそうに。」わかったさんはドアをあけました。
Poor thing…” Wakattasan opened the door.
「きゃあっ！」ふきとばされたかと思いました。
“Eek!” A powerful, icy wind blew her back.
もうれつな風。つめたいのです。へやの中はもやのようで、よく見えません。
The room was filled with a mist so thick, she couldn’t see.
はい色のもやの中から、声がしました。
From within the gray fog, a voice called out:
「わかったさん。まってたのよ。はやく、ブルゾン、ちょうだい。」
“Wakattasan, we’ve been waiting! Hurry, give me the jacket!”
「.....。」
“…?”
とつぜん、風むきがかわりました。風が、わかったさんをすいこんだのです。
Suddenly, the wind changed direction—and pulled Wakattasan inside!
思わずころんでしまいました。
She tumbled and fell—onto snow.
そこは、雪の上でした。やっと立ちあがると、サトウさんがいました。
As she stood up, she saw Mrs. Satou waiting.
イヌが、はげしくほえながら、ふたりをかこみました。ぜんぶで五とう。
Five dogs circled them, barking wildly.
サトウさんが、いいました。「ありがとう、わかったさん。あなたも、これをきて。」
Mrs. Satou said, “Thank you, Wakattasan. Now, here—wear this.”
けがわのふくをわたすのです。
She handed Wakattasan a fur coat.
じぶんは、わかったさんが とどけたブルゾンをきて、「さあ、しゅっぱつよ。」
Mrs. Satou put on the jacket Wakattasan brought. “Alright, let’s go!”
わかったさんは、なんのことやら、さっぱりわかりません。
Wakattasan had no idea what was going on.
「ここは、どこ？」
“Where… are we?”
「アイス市、クリーム町.....。」
“This is Ice City, Cream Town.”
「ええっ？」
“What?!”
「わたし、アイスクリームを作るために、ここにきたの。それで、考えたの。おさとうのかわりに、はちみつを入れたいの。けれど、ここには、はちみつがないわ。だから、これから.....。」
“I came here to make ice cream. And I thought, instead of sugar, I want to use honey. But there’s no honey here. So now…”
「わたし、えきまえにいって、かってきてあげましょうか。」
“I can go to the station and buy some if you want…”
「いいの。わたし、もっといい考えがあるの。きて、いっしょに。」
“No need! I’ve got a better idea. Come with me!”
「でも.....。より道しちゃいけないの。それに、おかあさんが.....。」
“But… I promised not to take any detours. And my mom…”
「さあ、コッコ、ケッケ、トット、ケッコ、トッコ。いくわよ。」
“Let’s go, Kokko, Kekke, Totto, Kekko, Tokko!”
ワン キャン ワォーン
Woof! Woof woof! Waaaaooo!
わかったさんにおかまえなしに、イヌが、とびちりました。
Without asking, the dogs leapt forward.
くびに、ロープがついていました。
Ropes were tied around their necks.
「はやく、はやく。」
“Hurry, hurry!” Mrs. Satou called.
サトウさんが のりこんだのは、モーターボートでした。ボートを、イヌが、そのようにひっぱるのです。
She got into a motorboat—pulled by dogs!
わかったさんは、なんだかたのしそうなので、ボートにのりました。
Wakattasan, swept up in the excitement, jumped in too.
モーターボートは、すべりだしました。まわりは、まるで雪の海。水しぶきみたいに 雪をけちらして、すすみました。
The boat slid forward, scattering snow like ocean spray.
「わあ、さむい。」
“Brrr! It’s freezing!” Wakattasan cried.
わかったさんがいうと、サトウさんは、「がまん、がまん。もうすこしで、あたたかい島につくわ。」
“Hang in there! We’ll reach a warm island soon,” Mrs. Satou replied.
いったとおりでした。
She was right.
まわりの雪がときはじめて、水になってきました。
The snow around them started to melt, turning into water.
「ごくろうさん、コッコ、ケッケ、トット、ケッコ、トッコ。ボートにあがって。」
“Good job, Kokko, Kekke, Totto, Kekko, Tokko. Come aboard!”
サトウさんは、五とうのイヌをボートによびよせました。
Mrs. Satou called the five dogs back to the boat.
それにしても、へんな名まえのイヌです。イヌじゃないみたい。
(They sure had strange names. They didn’t even sound like dogs.)
サトウさんは、こんどは、モーターボートのエンジンを いれました。
This time, she started the motor:
タッ ラ ラ ブルッ ブ ブィーン
Ta-ra-ra-blup-brrrr-vrooom!
こんどは、ほんものの水にうかんで、なみをまきあげました。
The boat glided across real water, making waves.
空が、はれてきました。まっさおな空に、くも一つなくなりました。
The sky cleared—bright blue with not a single cloud.
「あついわ。」サトウさんがブルゾンをぬぎました。
“It’s hot now,” said Mrs. Satou, taking off her jacket.
わかったさんも、けがわのふくをぬぎすてて、「いったい、どこにいくんですか。」
Wakattasan also peeled off her fur coat. “Where are we going anyway?”
「島よ。ほら、むこうの。」
“To that island, over there!”
ボートのさきに、ぽつんと、てんのように 島が見えてきました。その島が、見るまに大きくなって、こっちにせまってきます。
A tiny speck appeared ahead—then quickly grew bigger.
なんというスピードでしょう。
The boat sped toward it at an incredible pace.
それにー。なんという いいにおいでしょう。
And—what a wonderful smell!
目のまえの島から、香水のように、いいかおりがただよってくるのでした。
Like perfume, the scent drifted from the island.
島は、もうすぐそこでした。
Soon, they arrived.
わかったさんは、さけびました。「わあー、きれいな島！」
Wakattasan gasped, “Wow! What a beautiful island!”
島いちめんが、いろいろな色にかがやいているのです。
The entire island shimmered in countless colors.
見たこともきいたこともない、ふしぎな色でした。
Colors she’d never seen or even imagined before.
それは、花の色なのでした。あらゆるしゅるいの、うつくしい花が、島を、びっしりおおっているのです。
They came from flowers. Every kind of flower blanketed the island.
サトウさんは、モーターボートを、いわのそばにとめました。
Mrs. Satou docked by a rocky shore.
五とうのイヌが、ワン キャン いいながら、島にのぼっていきました。
The five dogs scrambled up the island, barking.
そして、サトウさん、わかったさんも つづきました。
Then Mrs. Satou and Wakattasan followed.
「すてきっ！」
“This is amazing!”
わかったさんは、もうむちゅうでした。
Wakattasan was in awe.
まぶしいくらいの花、花、花.....。
Flowers, flowers, and more flowers—so dazzling, it was like a dream.
そして、からだがとろけるような、いいかおり。
The scent made her feel like she was melting.
が、うっとりしたのは、そこまで。
But her wonder didn’t last long.
思わぬおでむかえが、やってきました。「きゃっ。ハチ。」
Suddenly—“Ahhh! Bees!”
ミツバチの大ぐんが、とんできたのです。
A swarm of honeybees flew toward them.
わかったさんは、ハチが大きらいでした。
Wakattasan hated bees.
小さいころ、きんじょの公園で、さされたことがあるのです。それからというもの、ハチを見ただけで、ふるえてしまうのでした。
She was stung in the park as a child—and ever since, just seeing a bee made her tremble.
ところが、サトウさんは、へいきです。
But Mrs. Satou was unfazed.
からだじゅうに、ミツバチがとまっても、にこにこわらって、こんなことをいうのです。
Even as bees landed all over her, she smiled and said:
「ね、ね、きいて、ミツバチさん。アイスクリームに、はちみつ入れるって、いい考えでしょ。」
“Listen, honeybees! Isn’t adding honey to ice cream a great idea?”
すると、ハチは、いいとも！とでもいうように、ブイーン ブンブン とびまわるのでした。
The bees buzzed and swirled around her, as if to say, “Yes!”
「わかったさん。ついてらっしゃい。ミツバチのおしろに、いきましょ。」
“Come on, Wakattasan. Let’s go to the bees’ castle.”
わかったさんは、まっさおです。
Wakattasan turned pale.
「いやです。ここでまってます。」というと、五とうのイヌが、わかったさんをとりかこみました。
“No way! I’ll wait here.” But the five dogs surrounded her—and began walking. She had no choice but to go with them.
かこんだまま、あるきだすのです。わかったさんも、あるかないわけにはいきません。
Scared, she shut her eyes and plugged her ears.
こわいので、目をつぶりました。ゆびで耳をふさぎました。
“Please don’t sting me…”
「ささないで。」
しばらくすると、サトウさんが、「わかったさん。目をあけてごらん。ちっともこわくないのよ。」
After a while, Mrs. Satou said, “Wakattasan, open your eyes. It’s not scary at all.”
おそるおそるあけてみると、てつもなく大きな、ハチのすにかこまれていました。
Nervously, Wakattasan peeked— They were surrounded by a giant beehive!
まん中に、かわいらしい おしろがあります。さとうがしのように、白いおしろでした。
At the center stood a lovely white castle, like sugar candy.
とびらがあいて、「サトウさん、よくいらっしゃいました。」女王バチが、すがたをあらわしました。
The doors opened. Welcome, Mrs. Satou,” said the Queen Bee.
サトウさんは、「はちみつを、120グラム、ください。」
Mrs. Satou said, “I’d like 120 grams of honey, please.”
「いいですとも。サトウさんとは、しんせきですものね。ごえんりょなく。」
“Of course! We’re relatives, after all. Don’t be shy.”
「たすかります。アイスクリームを作るんで、いま、ざいりょうを あつめているんです。」
“Thank you so much. I’m collecting ingredients for ice cream.”
「そう、どんなざいりょう？」
“Oh? What kind of ingredients?”
「ミルク500CC、たまごのきみ五こ、生クリーム100CC、それに、はちみつ120グラムです。」
“500cc of milk, 5 egg yolks, 100cc of cream, and 120 grams of honey.”
「みんな、あつまったの？」
“Have you got everything?”
「いいえ、これから.....。」
“Not yet…”
「じゃあたいへんだ。ゆっくりしてはいけないね。」
“Well, no time to waste, then!”
「アイスクリームができたら、女王さまにもプレゼントします。」
“When the ice cream’s done, I’ll bring some for you too.”
「ありがとう。」
“Thank you.”
女王バチは、とびらの中にはいって、それから、大きなびんをころがしてきました。
The Queen Bee went inside and rolled out a large jar.
ハチにとっては 大きいけれど、わかったさんには、小さく見えました。
It was big for a bee—but small to Wakattasan.
女王バチとわかれて、すのそとに出てびっくり。
They left the hive and were shocked.
ブイーン ワオ グイーンンンンン
Buzz! Whoosh! Zoom!
ミツバチが、ハチのすにむらがっているのです。島じゅうの花から あつめたハチが、あとから あとからもどってきて、そして、またとびたっていきます。
Bees were swarming the hive—returning from all over the island, then flying out again.
わかったさんは、イヌをけしかけました。
Wakattasan yelled to the dogs:
「もう、わたし、いや。気もちわるくなったわ。はやくあるいて！」
“That’s it! I can’t take this anymore! Let’s go, quick!”
かけ足で、モーターボートにもどりました。
She ran back to the boat.
ボートにエンジンがかかりました。見おくりにきた、ミツバチたちの、やかましいはねの音が、かきけされました。
The engine started, drowning out the buzz of the bees.
すぐに、島が小さくなっていきました。
The island faded into the distance.
「やれやれ、こわかった。」
“Whew! That was terrifying.”
わかったさんは、大きくためいきをつきました。
Wakattasan let out a huge sigh.
サトウさんがいいます。「あとはミルクと、生クリームと、たまごをあつめる.....。」
Mrs. Satou said, “Now we just need to get the milk, cream, and eggs…”
「え？ なにもそろってないんですか？」
“What? You don’t have them yet?!”
「そうよ。これから、さがしにいくの。」
"Nope! Time to find them.”
「どこへ？」
“Where?”
「さあ。.....ウシがすんでいる島でもあればいいわね。」
“Hmm… maybe there’s an island with cows on it.”
のんきなことをいってます。
So carefree!
こんなことで、アイスクリームができるのでしょうか。
But can ice cream really be made like this…?
そのうちに、空に、あやしげなにゅうどうぐもが あらわれました。
Before long, strange-looking thunderclouds appeared in the sky.
たいようをかくしてしまうほどのくもに、ひろがりました。
The clouds grew so big that they completely hid the sun.
なんだか風が出てきたようです。
A breeze began to blow.
「雨がふったら、どうしよう。」わかったさんは、しんぱいになりました。
“What if it rains?” Wakatta-san began to worry.
が、サトウさんは、へいきです。
But Satou-san was unfazed.
「はちみつは、ぬれないわ。」
“Honey doesn’t get wet.”
にゅうどうぐものほうに、ハンドルをまわして、つきすすんでいくのです。
She turned the steering wheel toward the thunderclouds and pushed forward.
そのときです。きゅうに、五とうのイヌが、ほえはじめました。
Then suddenly, the five dogs began barking loudly.
ウー グルルル ウワン！
“Woo... Grrrr... Woof!”
みんな、目をひからせて、おなじほうを にらんでいます。
All of them were glaring in the same direction, their eyes sharp.
サトウさんが、「どうしたの？ コッコ、ケッケ、トット、ケッコ、トッコ.....。」と、ききました。
Satou-san asked, “What’s wrong? Kokko, Kekke, Totto, Kekko, Tokko...?”
イヌは、ただほえるだけ。
The dogs only barked in response.
わかったさんは、イヌたちがむいているほうを見ました。
Wakatta-san looked in the direction the dogs were facing.
「ふねよ。大きなふねが見える。」
“It’s a boat. I see a big boat.”
にゅうどうぐもと、海のあいだに、ふねが見えました。
Between the thunderclouds and the sea, a ship came into view.
そして、それが、かいぞくせんだと気づくのに、時間はかかりませんでした。
It didn’t take long to realize—it was a pirate ship.
どろくのマークのついているはたが、ひらめいています。
A flag with a skull symbol fluttered in the wind.
わかったさんは、「かいぞくせんよ！」さけびました。
Wakatta-san shouted, “It’s a pirate ship!”
とたんに、イヌたちがなきやみました。
At that moment, the dogs stopped barking.
しっぽをまるめて、おしりの下に入れました。
They tucked their tails underneath themselves.
クフン ヒュウ フン
Whimper... Whine... Sniff.
だらしのないイヌ。サトウさんも、ハンドルをまわして、「わたし、こわい。だめ、にげよう。」ふるえだしたのです。
“Useless dogs,” muttered. Satou-san began to tremble, turning the wheel. “I’m scared. No good, we have to escape.”
あまりふるえるので、うまくハンドルがにぎれません。
She was shaking so much that she couldn’t hold the steering wheel properly.
ジグザクしながら、かえって、かいぞくせんにちかづいていくのです。
The boat zigzagged, and instead of escaping, they got closer to the pirate ship.
ズ ダーン！
Boom!
かいぞくが、大ほうをうってきました。
The pirates fired a cannon.
たまが、モーターボートのちかくにおちて、水しぶきがあがりました。
The cannonball landed near the motorboat, splashing water high into the air.
しぶきが、雨のようにふりかかってきます。
Water sprayed over them like rain.
つづいてもう一ぱつ。こんどは、うしろに。また、一ぱつ、こんどは、まえにおちました。
Another shot followed—this time behind them. Then another—this time in front.
「きゃあっ！」
“Kyah!”
サトウさんは、ハンドルから手をはなして、しゃがみこんでしまいました。
Satou-san let go of the wheel and crouched down in fear.
わかったさんも、こわいのです。
Wakatta-san was scared too.
が、そんなこと、いってはいられません。
But there was no time to panic.
大ほうのたまが、まっすぐボートにむかって、とんでくるのです。
A cannonball was flying straight toward the boat.
わかったさんは、むちゅうで、うでをのばして、「ブロック！」
Without thinking, Wakatta-san reached out her arms and yelled, “Block!”
バレーボールのように、たまをはねかえしました。
Just like in volleyball, she bounced the ball away.
なんと、そのたまが、むこうにとんでいって、かいぞくせんのそばに、バシャーン！
The cannonball flew off and landed with a splash next to the pirate ship.
つづいてとんできたを、「アタック！」おもいきってはねとばすと、それが、マストの下にめいちゅう！火をふきました。
Another one came flying—“Attack!” she shouted, hitting it back with all her might. It landed right under the mast and exploded into flames.
かいぞくは、びっくりして、大ほうをうつのをやめました。
The pirates were shocked and stopped firing.
そして、家事をけしはじめたのです。
They began trying to put out the fire.
わかったさんは、さけんでいいました。
Wakatta-san shouted,
「やい、やい、やむしかいぞく。おとなしく、こうさんしなさいよ！」
“Hey, hey! You cowardly pirates! Surrender quietly!”
かいぞくのおかしが、それをきいて、「まいった。なんでもすきなものをあげるから、たすけてくれ。」
The pirate captain shouted back, “We give up! We’ll give you anything you want—just help us!”
「わかったわ。」
“Alright,” Wakatta-san replied.
考えるひまもありませんでした。
There was no time to think.
わかったさんは、いったのです。「ミルクを500CCと、生クリーム100CC、よこしなさい。」
She said, “Give me 500cc of milk and 100cc of heavy cream.”
「へい、へい。」
“Yes, ma’am!”
かいぞくのおかしらは、手下にいいつけて、ミルクと生クリームをもってこさせました。
The pirate captain ordered his crew to bring milk and cream.
それを、うきわにくくりつけて、なげてよごしたのです。
They tied it to a life ring and tossed it over.
「どうか、これで、かんべんしてください。」
“Please accept this and forgive us.”
「わかった。」
“Alright,” said Wakatta-san.
そのとき、うずくまっていたサトウさんが、「たまごも、もらってちょうだい。」といいました。
Then, Satou-san, still crouched, added, “Get some eggs too.”
「わかった。」
“Got it.”
わかったさんが、たまご.....と、いおうとしたときです。ながれてきたうきわの上で、白ネコが、「ポケット、ケポット、トッポケト。」と、みょうなじゅもんを となえたのです。
Just as Wakatta-san was about to say “eggs...”, a white cat on the life ring chanted a strange spell: “Pocket, Kepot, Topoket.”
ーあれ、あのネコは.....。でも、白ネコだわー。と、そのとき、ほのおにつつまれた かいぞくせんが、音もたてずに、きえていました。
—Huh? That cat... But it’s a white cat— At that moment, the pirate ship engulfed in flames suddenly disappeared without a sound.
そして、白ネコもー。
And so did the white cat.
「.....。」
“.....”
サトウさんが、きゅうにげんきになって、ハンドルをにぎりました。
Satou-san suddenly perked up and grabbed the wheel.
「まあ、いいわ。たまごは、アイス市にかえれば、手にはいる。」
“Oh well. We can get eggs once we return to Ice Cream City.”
ふしぎなことは、これでおわりではありませんでした。
The strange events didn’t end there.
にゅうぐもが、やがて空いっぱいにひろがって、あたりがくらくなって、なんと雪がふってきたのです。
The thunderclouds spread across the whole sky, everything turned dark, and then—snow began to fall.
「さむい！」わかったさんが ふるえたとき、
“It’s freezing!” shivered Wakatta-san.
「ついたわ、アイス市にかえってきたの。」サトウさんがいいました。
“We’ve arrived—back in Ice Cream City,” Satou-san said.
イヌもげんきをとりもどして、モーターボートを、そりのようにひっぱりました。
The dogs perked up and pulled the motorboat like a sled.
ボートは、町につきました。
The boat reached the town.
わかったさんは、おどろきました。この町、たてものが、みんなれいぞうこなのです。
Wakatta-san was amazed. All the buildings in the town were refrigerators.
さっきは、気がつかなかったのですが、まどのない家ばかりです。
She hadn’t noticed it before, but every house had no windows.
かべに、3879と、ばんごうがかいてありました。
The wall of one building had the number “3879” written on it.
サトウさんが、いいました。「ここが、わたしの家なの。ともかく、はいりましょう。わかったさん。」
“This is my house. Come on in, Wakatta-san,” said Satou-san.
大きなドアをあけて 中にはいろうと.....。
As she opened the big door to go inside—
とつぜん中から、「ミャーオ！」黒ネコが、とびだしてきたのです。
Suddenly, a black cat leapt out with a loud “Meow!”
わかったさんは、「また出たっ。」にげていくほうを見ました。
Wakatta-san shouted, “It’s back!” and looked at it run away.
とー。ボートのそばにいたイヌたちが、みんなメンドリになっていました。
Then she noticed—all the dogs by the boat had turned into hens.
黒ネコは、見つかりませんでした。
The black cat couldn’t be found.
サトウさんは、手をたたいてよろこびました。
Satou-san clapped her hands with joy.
「そうなのよ。コッコ、ケッケ、トット、ケッコ、トッコ、みんな、たまごを一つずつうんで。」
“That’s right! Kokko, Kekke, Totto, Kekko, Tokko—all of you, lay one egg each.”
わかったさんは、「わかんない。」といって、すわりこんでしまいました。
Wakatta-san sat down and muttered, “I don’t get it.”
メンドリが、コッコ、ケッケ、トット、ケッコ、トッコとないて、たまごをうみました。

家の中は、まるでれいぞうこの中のようでした。

サトウさんは、むこうのかべについているキッチンにいきました。
Satou-san went to the kitchen built into the far wall.
「たまごは、きみだけつかうのよ。」
“For the eggs, we’ll only use the yolks.”
たまごをポンと二つにわり、白みをそとにながして、きみだけをすくいとりました。
She cracked the eggs, poured out the whites, and scooped up the yolks.
それを、ガラスのボールに入れて、「さあ、わかったさんも、てつだって。」
Putting them in a glass bowl, she said, “Come on, Wakatta-san, help out.”
「わかった。」が、手がかじかんで、うまくいきません。
“Alright,” Wakatta-san replied, but her hands were so cold she couldn’t move them properly.
「サトウさん。さむいわ。ストーブないの。」わかったさんがきくと、
“Satou-san, I’m cold. Don’t you have a stove?”
「じゃあ、ミルクをあたためてよ。はちみつも入れて、ようくとかしてね。」
“Then warm up the milk. Add the honey too and melt it well.”
「わかった。」
“Got it.”
おなべに、ミルクとはちみつを入れて、火にかけました。
Wakatta-san put milk and honey in a pot and placed it over the flame.
小さな火でも、けっこうあたたかでした。

そのあいだに、サトウさんは、ボールのきみを、あわだてきで、かきまぜはじめました。

いきなりおなべをとりあげて、「ミルクと、きみをまぜあわせるのよ。」
She quickly took the pot and said, “Now, mix the milk with the yolks.”
おなべのミルクを、きみのボールに、すこしずつそそぎこみました。
She poured the milk little by little into the bowl with yolks.
「ここでまた、ようく、まぜるの。」

ボールの中みが、うすいクリーム色になりました。

「きれいっ。」わかったさんがさけぶと、サトウさんは、

Singing, Satou-san lifted the spatula.
「ほうら、どろりとしてきたでしょう。」
“Look—it’s gotten thick.”
木しゃもじについたクリームに、ゆびで、せんをかいてみました。
She drew a line on the cream on the spatula with her finger.
はっきりと、せんがかけました。
A clear line appeared.
「よろしい。火をけして。」
“Perfect. Turn off the heat.”
こんどは、こしきをとって、クリームを、ボールにこしとりました。
Then she strained the cream into a bowl.
「さます。さます。てばやく、さます。」
“Cool it. Quickly!”
ボールのまわりに、こおりをあてて、クリームをさましました。
She placed ice around the bowl to chill it.
「このまま、あたたかくしておいたら、スクランブル・エッグになっちゃうのよ。」
“If we keep it warm, it’ll turn into scrambled eggs.”
わかったさんは、ためいきをつきました。
Wakatta-san sighed.
「めんどうなのね。」
“So much trouble.”
サトウさんは、「これから、これから。」さめたクリームを、バットにながしこんで、ラップをかけました。
“We’re just getting started,” said Satou-san. She poured the cooled cream into a tray and covered it with plastic wrap.
「わかったさん。こんどは、二かいにいくの。」
“Now, Wakatta-san, we’re going upstairs.”
そばのかいだんを、バットをもって、あがっていきました。
She carried the tray up the nearby stairs.
二かいは、れいとうしつでした。
The second floor was a freezer room.
わかったさんは、とちゅうまであがって、「もう、わたし、がまんできない。いやだ。さむいの。」
Halfway up, Wakatta-san stopped. “I can’t take it anymore. I hate this. It’s too cold.”
すると、サトウさんは、「じゃあ、二時間ばかり、そとに出ていらっしゃい。」
Satou-san replied, “Then go outside for about two hours.”
そとだって、さむいのです。
But it was cold outside too.
わかったさんは、コッコ、ケッケ、トット、ケッコ、トッコと、おいかけっこをして、あそびました。
Wakatta-san played tag with Kokko, Kekke, Totto, Kekko, and Tokko.
そのうちに、思いだしたのです。
Then she remembered—
「かいぞくからぶんとった、生クリームをわすれているわ。」
“We forgot the whipped cream we took from the pirates!”
家の中にはいって、サトウさんにいうと、「そうそう。」
She went inside and told Satou-san. “Oh right,” Satou-san said.
またボールをとりだして、生クリームを入れ、ホイップをはじめました。
She pulled out another bowl and began whipping the cream.

わかったさんは、なんだか、ねむくなってきました。

“Wakatta-san, please stop by on your way home after work. I’m going to make ice cream with honey. It’s delicious.”
わかったさんは、もう、なにがなんだか、わからなくなりました。

「できあがるまで、たっぷり四時間かかるのよ。まぜて、れいとうこ。出して、まぜる。まぜて、れいとうこ.....。」

「はあい、四時間あと、おひるすぎに、またきまあす。」
“Okay, I’ll come back in the afternoon, four hours from now!”
わかったさんは、かいだんを、かけりました。
Wakatta-san hurried down the stairs.
「わすれないうちに、かぜぐすり、かっておこう。」
“Before I forget, I should buy some cold medicine.”
くすりやさんに、いくことにしました。
