Wakatta-san's Cream Puffs
わかったさんは、クリーニングやさんです。
Wakatta-san runs a dry cleaning shop.
小さな ワゴンで、せんたくものの はいたつに でかけます。
She sets off in her little wagon to deliver laundry.
おとうさんが、「雪で 道が すべるぞ。きをつけろ。」というと、「わかった、わかった。」
Her father says, “Be careful, the roads are slippery because of the snow.” Wakatta-san replies, “I got it, I got it.”
おかあさんが、「せんたくものを、おとしちゃ だめよ。というと、「わかった、わかった。」
Her mother says, “Don’t drop the laundry.” Wakatta-san replies again, “I got it, I got it.”
それで、わかったさんと よばれるように なったのでした。
And that’s how she came to be called Wakatta-san ("I got it" lady).
きょうは、二丁目を まわる日です。
Today, she is making her rounds in the Second District.
二丁目は、公園や 学校が あって、しずかな 町でした。
The Second District is a quiet neighborhood with a park and a school.
はじめは、白タイルばりの レイおくさんの いえ。セーターを おとどけ。
Her first stop is at Mrs. Lei’s white-tiled house. She’s delivering a sweater.
「こんにちは！クリーニングやです。」
“Hello! This is the laundry service,” Wakatta-san calls out.
ドアが あいて、出てきた レイおくさん、
When the door opens, Mrs. Lei says,
「わかったさん、いいもの プレゼントするわ。これね.....。」といって、とりだしたのは、ペンダントです。
“Wakatta-san, I have a little present for you. Here, take this. ”She hands her a pendant.
「わたしが 作ったのよ。気に いったら、してみて。」
“I made it myself. If you like it, please wear it.”
わかったさんは、うれしくなりました。
Wakatta-san feels delighted.
木ぼりの ゾウが ついている、かわいらしい ペンダントです。
The pendant features a cute, wooden-carved elephant.
「あら、かわいい。」
“Oh, how lovely!”
「そのゾウ、アフリカで 買ったものよ。」
“I bought that elephant in Africa,” Mrs. Lei explains.
「へえ。ありがとう。」
"Wow, thank you."
「だいじに してね。」
“Take good care of it,” Mrs. Lei says.
「もちろん、わかったわ。」
“Of course, I will. I got it!”
わかったさんは、さっそく、ペンダントを むねに かけました。
She immediately puts the pendant around her neck.
「さようなら。」あまり うれしかったので、セーターだけ おいて、かえって きて しまいました。
“Goodbye!” she calls, feeling so happy that she heads back only after leaving the swater.
なんげんめかに、アイさんの 家に よりました。
A few deliveries later, she stops by Mrs. Ai’s house.
おとどけものは ありません。たまにしか たのまないのに、おくさんは、「わかったさん。うちには、ちっとも よってくれないのね。」なんて、ひにくをいうのです。
Though there’s no laundry to deliver, Mrs. Ai says, “Wakatta-san, you never seem to stop by my house.”
あまり よリたくは ないのですが、しょうばい、しょうばい。
Though Wakatta-san doesn’t enjoy these visits, she remains professional.
「こんにちは！クリーニングやです。」
“Hello! This is the laundry service.”
すると、アイさんは、「ちょうど いいところに きたわ。こんど くるとき、おたくの きんじょの ケーキやさんで シュークリーム 二こ 買ってきて。あそこ、おいしいって、ひょうばんね。たのむわ。」
Mrs. Ai responds, “Oh, perfect timing! The next time you come, can you pick up two cream puffs from the cake shop in your neighborhood? I hear they’re really delicious.”
「は、はい。」
“Um, sure…”
「お金は、そのとき はらうわ。」
“I’ll pay you when you deliver them,” Mrs. Ai adds.
「.....で、せんたくものは？」
“And the laundry?” Wakatta-san asks.
「きょうは ないの。シュークリーム 買ってきたら、なにか 出すわ。」
“None today. But I’ll give you something when you bring the cream puffs.”
わかったさんは、気分が わるくなりました。
Wakatta-san starts to feel uneasy.
ーへんな人。わたし、おつかいやさん じゃないのよ。シュークリームなんて、じぶんで 作ればいいのに.....。
*“What a strange person… I’m not an errand runner. She should make her own cream puffs…”* she thinks.
さて、もうすぐ、おひるです。さいごの 家は、小学校の うらの、おスギおばさんです。
Finally, it's almost lunchtime, and the last house is Mrs. Osugi’s behind the elementary school.
「こんにちは！クリーニングやです。」
“Hello! This is the laundry service.”
というと、なんと いうことでしょう。
But what a surprise!
おスギおばさんは、目を赤くなきはらして、「うちの、うちの ピーコが、いなく なっちゃったのよォ」
Mrs. Osugi’s eyes are red from crying, and says “Our... our Piko is missing!”
「えっ。あの、インコの ピーコが？」
“Huh? Your parrot Piko?”
「そうなの。けさ、えさを あげようと したら、にげちゃったの。おそうじ している ところ だったんで、まどを あけて おいたのよ。そうしたら.....。ああ、どうしよう。まだ 雪が ふってきたら、しんじゃう.....。」
“Yes, this morning, as I was feeding him, he flew away! I was cleaning and left the window open… And now, with the snow, if it keeps falling, he’ll die…”
「わかったわ。」わかったさんは、いいました。
“I got it!” Wakatta-san says.
「わたし、町じゅう まわって いるから、見つけて あげる。」
“I’m going all around town, so I’ll find him for you.”
「たのみますよ。ああ、ピーコォ。」
“Oh, please! Piko!”
「わかった、わかった。」
“I got it, I got it,” Wakatta-san assures her.
へんなことを たのまれる日も あるものです。
There are days when you get asked to do strange things.
まったく、へんな日には、へんな ことが かさなる ものです。
It’s one of those strange days when unusual things keep happening.
わかったさんが、おみせに かえると、「でんわだよ。レイおくさんから。」と、いわれました。
When Wakatta-san gets back to her shop, someone says, “There’s a phone call for you, from Mrs. Lei.”
でんわに 出てみると、「わかったさん。わすれちゃ こまるわ。わたし、コートを クリーニングして もらおうと 思っていたのに、かえっちゃうんですもの。」
She picks up the phone. “Wakatta-san, you forgot something. I was going to give you my coat to clean, but you left so quickly!”
「はっ、はい。すいません。いまから すぐ、いただきに あがいります。」
“Oh, I’m terribly sorry! I’ll come to pick it up right away.”
「おねがいね。」
“Please do.”
しまった。ペンダントを いただいて、うれしくて、そのまま とびだして しまったのです。
Wakatta-san had been so happy with the pendant that she rushed out and left.
わかったさんは、あわてて、そとに 出ました。
In a hurry, she dashes outside.
とー。
Then,
雪に すべって、ひっくり かえって、ザバッ！頭を うって しまいました。
she slips on the snow and falls, hitting her head.
「いたーいっ。」
“Ouch!” she cries.
おきあがって、びっくりしました。
As she gets up, she realizes something strange.
一めんの 草原です。
She’s now in a wide grassy field.
「.....？」
“Huh?”
わかったさんは、じぶんの 頭を コンコン たたいて みました。
She taps her head to make sure she’s okay.
すると、「わかったさん、いそがなくちゃ。.....さあ、のった、のった。」
Suddenly, she hears a voice. “Wakatta-san, hurry up! Come on, get on!”
「えっ？」
“Huh?”
見ると、うしろに、ゾウが いるのです。
She looks behind her, and there’s an elephant!
どこかで 見たことの あるゾウでした。
It looks familiar, but she can’t quite place where she’s seen it before.
ーどこで 見たのかしら？ー
Where did I see it?
ぼんやり かんがえて いると、ズムッと、はなが のびてきて、わかったさんを かかえて、せなかに のせて しまいました。
As she’s trying to remember, the elephant extends its trunk and picks her up, placing her on its back.
「ひゃあーっ。」ゾウが はしりだしました。
“Yikes!” she exclaims as the elephant starts running.
わかったさんは、「ど、どこにいくの？」ききました。
“Where are we going?” Wakatta-san asks.
「レイおくさんの ところだよ。コートを うけとりに、ね。」
“We’re heading to Mrs. Lei’s place to pick up her coat.”
レイおくさんと いわれて、思い出しました。
Hearing this, Wakatta-san realizes
このゾウ、ペンダントのゾウなのです。
—this elephant is from the pendant!
そういえば、むねにあるはずの ペンダントは、ひもだけに なっています。
Sure enough, the pendant on her chest is just a string now.
ゾウは、道も ない 草原を、ただはしっています。
The elephant runs across the grassy field without a path.
わかったさんは、「レイおくさんの 家、どこだか 知ってるの？」
“Do you know where Mrs. Lei’s house is?” she asks.
ゾウに きくと、「まかせて おきな。」と いうだけです。
“Leave it to me,” the elephant replies.
そのうちに、ゾウが、ふと とまりました。
Eventually, the elephant stops.
大きな 水たまりの ような 池が ありました。
There was a pond like a big paddle.
「のどが、かわいたよ。」水を のむらしいのです。
“I’m thirsty,” it says, preparing to drink some water.
そのとき、ピッ キッチュイ キ チュチチチ 鳥が なきました。
Just then, a bird chirps.
池の ほとりの 草の葉に、インコが とまっている ではありませんか。
Looking up, Wakatta-san spots a parrot perched on the leaves of a nearby plant.
インコは、「まあ、たくましくて、いさましい ゾウさん。あなた、すきっ」と いうのです。
The parrot says, “Oh, what a strong, handsome elephant! I like you!”
そして、ゾウの はなの さきに、ちょっと とまると、「わたしの おうちに いらっしゃい。おいしい 紅茶を いれますわ。そして、ふたりで、たのしい おはなし、しましょうよ。」
The parrot hops onto the tip of the elephant’s trunk and says, “Why don’t you come to my house? I’ll make us some nice tea, and we can chat.”
いわれて ゾウは、「うん、そうしよう。」
The elephant happily replies, “Sounds great. Let’s go!”
「さあ、こっちよ、わたしの いうとおりに、はしって。」
“Follow my directions!” the parrot says.
「いいとも。」はなの さきに インコを のせたまま、はしりだした ではありませんか。
“Sure thing,” the elephant agrees, running again, with the parrot perched on its trunk.
わかったさんは、「だめよっ、レイおくさんの 家に いくのよ。」
Wakatta-san shouts, “No! We need to go to Mrs. Lei’s house!”
ゾウは いいます。「ぼくは、この インコに ひと目ぼれ。できたら、けっこんしたいな。」
But the elephant says, “I’ve fallen in love with this parrot. If possible, I want to marry her.”
わかったさんの いうことを、きいて くれません。
The elephant completely ignores Wakatta-san’s plea.
小さな 山を こえたら、むこうに、森が 見えてきました。
After crossing a small hill, they sight a forest.
「わたしの おうちは、森の中。」
“My house is in the forest,” the parrot says.
「ぼくも、森が すきだ。森で いっしょに くらそうか。」
“I love the forest too,” the elephant replies. “Shall we live together there?”
「わたしの いうこと、きけたらね。」
”If you listen to me, maybe,” the parrot teases.
「なんでも、きくとも。」
“I’ll listen to everything you say,” the elephant promises.
わかったさんは、心ぱいに なって きました。
Wakatta-san grows more and more anxious.
あんな 森の 中に つれこまれたら、どうしましょう。にげだした ところで、まい子に なるだけです。かといって、ゾウや インコと くらすことも できないし。
What if they take me into that forest? What will I do? If I try to escape, I’ll just get lost. But I can’t live with an elephant and a parrot either!
ゾウは、森の 中に はいって いきました。
The elephant enters the forest.
スキップを ふんでいる ように、うきうき しているのでした。
He was feeling excited, as if he were skipping along.
ゾウの せなかが ゆれるので、わかったさんは、こわくて、しがみついている だけでした。
The bumpy ride on the elephant’s back makes Wakatta-san cling on for dear life.
やがて、「さあ、ついたわ。」と、インコが いったので、見てみると、そこに 家が ありました。
Soon, the parrot says, “Here we are!” So, she looked at and noticed that there was a house.
わかったさんは、あっと、おどろきました。なんと、レイおくさんの 家なのです。
To Wakatta-san’s surprise, they’ve arrived at Mrs. Lei’s house.
白い タイルを はりめぐらした、ぴかぴか 光る 家でした。
It’s a beautiful, shiny white-tiled house.
「さあ、おはいりになって。」ゾウが はなで、ドアを あけました。
“Come on in,” the elephant says, using its trunk to open the door.
やっと はいれる くらいの ドアでした。
The door is just big enough for them to squeeze through.
はいってみて、また、びっくり。
As entering inside, Wakatta-san got shocked.
キッチンの わきの へやに、大きな 鳥かごが あって、その中に、なんと、あの アイさんが はいって いたのです。
There is a large birdcage in the corner of the kitchen, and inside the cage is… Mrs. Ai!
アイさんは、げんきの ない声で、「おくれよ、おくれよ。えさを、おくれ。あまい、あまい、シュークリーム.....。」
Mrs. Ai weakly mutters, “Feed me, feed me. I want sweet, sweet cream puffs…”
かごの はり金に しがみつき、ゆっさ ゆっさと ゆすりながら、いうのです。
She clings to the bars of the cage and sways as she speaks.
インコは、「あらまあ、ごめんなさい。いますぐ、あげますよ。よしよし。」
The parrot says, “Oh dear, my apologies. I’ll get you something right away.”
わかったさんは、頭が くらくら してきました。
Wakatta-san feels dizzy.
みんな まちがって いるのです。
Everything is wrong.
レイおくさん 家に アイさんが いて、人間が 鳥かごに はいって、鳥が そとにいて.....。
Mrs. Ai is in Mrs. Lei's house and there’s a human in the birdcage, and a parrot outside…
「もしかして、あんた。」わかったさんは、いいました。
“Could you be…” Wakatta-san begins.
「おスギおばさんの 家から にげた インコ じゃないの？」
“Are you the parrot that escaped from Mrs. Osugi’s house?”
すると インコは、キッチュイ チュ キキキキッ
The parrot chirps loudly,
キッチンを ひとまわり とんで、「わかったのね。いいわ。でも、ここに きたら、わたしの いうことを きくのよ。そうしないと、あんたも かごの 中に いれちゃうからね。」
then flies around the kitchen and says, “You’ve figured it out! But now that you’re here, you’ll listen to me. If you don’t, I’ll lock you in the cage too!”
きゅうに、こわい 声になって、いうのです。
The parrot’s voice suddenly turns menacing.
「シュークリームを、作りなさい！」
“Make me some cream puffs!”
わかったさんは、こまりました。
Wakatta-san is flustered.
シュークリームなんて、作ったことが ないのです。
She’s never made cream puffs before.
「わたし.....。」
“I... ”
どぎまぎしていると、インコは、チュッキィーと、けたたましく ないて、「水125CC、バター50グラム、さとう小さじ１/２.....。おなべに いれて、火に かける！」と いいました。
Seeing her panic, the parrot screeches, “125cc of water, 50 grams of butter, half a teaspoon of sugar... Put them in a pot and heat them!”
いわれても、わかったさんは、ぼんやり するだけです。
Even though the parrot gives instructions, Wakatta-san is still dazed.
それを 見た ゾウは、「はやくしな。やらないと、鳥かごだぜ！二度と 出られないんだぞ。」と、おどしました。
Seeing this, the elephant chimes in, “You better hurry. If you don’t, you’ll end up in the birdcage! And you’ll never get out.”
「わかった。」
“I got it!” Wakatta-san says.
わかったさんが、キッチンに いって、おなべを 出し、水を はかって、れいぞうこから バターを 出し、たなから さとうを 出していると、そのあいだに、インコは、ゾウの 頭に のって、うたいました。
She goes into the kitchen, takes out a pot, measures the water, and retrieves the butter from fridge and sugar from the shelves. Meanwhile, the parrot sits on the elephant’s head, singing:
水は強火 わたしの もえる ハート あわが 出て ぷっくり ぷふーっ
Water on high heat, my burning heart, bubbles rising, pffft!
にえろ わきたて あわが こまかく くだけるまで
Boil until the bubbles burst into tiny bits…
ゾウは、うっとりと、インコの うたを きいていましたが やがて、じぶんも、うたいだしました。
The elephant, captivated by the parrot’s song, starts singing along too:
ぼくの ハートも 強火 血が わきたち おどるよ
My heart is also on high heat, blood boiling, dancing…
きみの もえる ハートに ぴたり ハーモニー
in perfect harmony with your fiery heart…
ところが インコは、ゾウの ひたいを ケンケンと つついて、「なにを、ゆめ みたいな こと いってるの。いまに、あんたの ばんに なるんだよ。」と いいました。
But the parrot pecks at the elephant’s forehead and says, “What are you daydreaming about? Soon, it’ll be your turn to be eaten!”
そして、わかったさんに いうのです。「どう、黄色い あわが、こまかく なったかい？ あせっちゃ いけないよ。じっくり、じっくり.....。」
Turning back to Wakatta-san, the parrot says, “How are the bubbles? Have they become fine? Don’t rush it. Take your time.”
ばたばた とんできて なべを のぞくと、「はい、よろしい。火から おろして、テーブルに おく。そして、小麦粉75グラム、ようくふるって.....。」
The parrot flutters down and peers into the pot. “Okay, take it off the heat and place it on the table. Now sift in 75 grams of flour.”
わかったさんは、だんだん、おもしろく なってきました。
Wakatta-san, finding the process more fun now,
「わかったわ。シュークリームの シューを 作るんでしょ？」
says, “Got it! We’re making the puff part of the cream puffs, right?”
「きまってる、よけいなことを、いわない。」
“Of course. Now stop asking unnecessary questions.”
「わかった。」
“Got it.”
「小麦粉を、なべに 一度いれて、また、とろ火に かけながら、ようく まぜる。」
"Put the flour into the pot once, then simmer on low heat while stirring it well."
「はい。」
"Okay."
そこへ ゾウが やってきて、インコに いうのでした。
At that moment, the elephant came over and said to the parrot,
「ちょうど いいね。ぼくと インコちゃんが けっこんして、この わかったさんに ごちそうを 作らせたり、せんたくや そうじを させれば、ふたりの、あまー、 あまーい、スイートホーム。」
"Perfect! If I marry you, Parrot, we can make Wakatta-san cook delicious meals for us, and have her do the laundry and cleaning. It’ll be a sweet, sweet home."
すると、インコは、「ばかばかしい。あまいのは、シュークリームだけで いいのよ。」と いいながら、わかったさんに、「なべを、火から おろしなさい。」
But the parrot scoffed, "That’s ridiculous. The only sweet thing we need is cream puffs!" Then, turning to Wakatta-san, she said, "Take the pot off the heat."
「わかった。」
"Got it."
「それから、小さな ボールに、たまごを 二こ といて。」
"Next, crack two eggs into a small bowl and beat them."
「わかった。」
"Got it."
そして、ゾウに いいました。
Then, she turned to the elephant and said.
「さあ、ここで ゾウくんの 出ばんよ。力が いるのよ。力と いえば ゾウに かぎるわ。木べらを もって.....。」
"Now it's your turn, Elephant. We need strength for this. When it comes to strength, there’s no one better than an elephant. Hold the spatula..."
むりやり、はなの さきに、木べらを にぎらせて、
She forcibly placed the spatula at the tip of the elephant’s trunk.
「わかったさんは、たまごを、すこしずつ いれてちょうだい。それを ゾウくん、いきおい よく まぜる。力を いれないと、まざらないわよ。」
"Wakatta-san, pour the eggs in little by little. And Elephant, stir it vigorously. You need to stir hard, or it won't mix properly."
インコときたら、じぶんでは なにも やらないで、めいれい ばかりです。
The parrot, meanwhile, did nothing but give orders.
ゾウは、あまい ゆめから さめた ように、「ぼくに こんなことを させるために、つれてきたのかい。」と いいました。
The elephant, snapping out of his sweet daydream, muttered, "So, this is what you brought me here for?"
インコは、「つべこべ いわないで、はい、かきまぜる。」つめたい いいかた でした。
The parrot coldly replied, "Stop whining and stir!"
わかったさんは、気のどくに なりました。そして、「はやく やって、おいしい シュークリーム たべましょう。」と、はげまして あげました。
Feeling sorry for the elephant, Wakatta-san encouraged him, saying, "Let’s hurry up and make delicious cream puffs together."
たまご 二こぶんを まぜると、どろっと、やわらかく なりました。
After mixing the eggs, the batter became soft and sticky.
インコは、「さあ、それを、しぼり ぶくろに いれて、テンパンの 上に、２センチくらいの 山に、しぼりだすのよ。はい、やって。」
"Now, fill a piping bag with the dough and pipe it into small mounds about 2 cm high on the baking sheet," said the parrot.
「わかった。」
"Got it."
わかったさんは、すっかり、おもしろく なりました。
Wakatta-san found herself enjoying it.
ニュルッ ヌメリッ と、しぼりだしている うちに、だんだん じょうずに なってきます。
As he piped the dough, it became smoother and easier to handle.
ゾウは、がっくりして、ゆかに、すわりこんで しまいました。
The elephant, on the other hand, collapsed onto the floor in defeat.
それを 見た インコは、「なにを さぼっているの？あんたは、ホイップクリームを 作ってちょうだい。生クリーム、200CC、さとう、大さじ二はい。バニラエッセンス、二たらし。それを、きれいに あらった ボールに いれて、さっくり するまで、かき立てるの。やすんだら だめよ。さぼっちゃ だめ！
Seeing this, the parrot squawked, "What are you slacking off for? Make the whipped cream! You need 200cc of fresh cream, two tablespoons of sugar, and two drops of vanilla essence. Put it in a clean bowl and whip it up until it’s nice and fluffy. No breaks allowed! Don’t slack off!"
そういってから、「わたし、すっかり くびれたわ。ちょっと おやすみ するからね。わかったさん、オーブンを200度に あたためて、そのテンパンを いれて ちょうだい。」
After giving these instructions, the parrot said, "I’m exhausted. I need a break. Wakatta-san, preheat the oven to 200 degrees and put the baking sheet inside."
「わかった。」
"Got it."
わかったさんが こたえたとたん、かべに かけて あった はと時計の 中に、はいって しまいました。
As soon as Wakatta-san answered, the parrot flew into the cuckoo clock on the wall.
「なん分 やくのよ？」
"How long do I bake it for?"
きいても こたえません。
But there was no reply.
ちょうど 十分たったとき、キッチュイ キッチュイ
Exactly ten minutes later, a sound came from the clock—chirp chirp.
時計から、ハトではなく、インコが かおを 出して、「オーブンを 180度に 下げて ちょうだい。ドアを あけたら だめよ。しっぱい するわよ。」
The parrot, not the cuckoo, popped out and said, "Lower the oven to 180 degrees. Don’t open the door, or it will fail."
それだけ いって、また ひっこみました。
And with that, the parrot disappeared back into the clock.
そして また十分たつと、ピッキイ キッピイ
Another ten minutes passed, a sound came from the clock—chirp chirp
時計から インコが とびだして、「はあい、やけました。ふっくら ふくらんだ でしょう？みごと、みごと。」
and the parrot popped out again with a cheerful, "It’s done! The puffs are beautifully risen, aren’t they? Perfect, perfect."
こんがりと、やき色が ついた シューが テンパンの 上に ならんで いました。
Golden-brown cream puffs lined the baking sheet.
わかったさんは、「おいしそう。」と いって、一こ もって みました。
"They look delicious," Wakatta-san said as he picked one up.
まるで、もって いないように かるいのです。
It was so light it felt like he wasn’t holding anything at all.
「わかった。よこに 二つに 切って、中に ホイップクリームを いれるのね。」
"I see. I need to slice them in half and fill them with whipped cream, right?"
「そう。ふたに、いろいろ かざりをすると、もっと おいしそうね。」
"That’s right. And if you decorate the top, they’ll look even more delicious."
「おしえて、かざり。」
"Teach me how to decorate them."
「いちばん かんたん なのね。アイシング っていうのよ。とろけた さとうが 白く かたまった、あまーいの.....。」
"The easiest way is icing," said the parrot. "It’s a sweet, white glaze made by melting sugar."
インコは、時計から のぞいたまま、「さとう 50グラムに、水、小さじ二はいを、すこしずつ いれて、ねっていくの。とろりと してきたら、シューを さかさに もって、つけてごらん。」
The parrot, still peeking from the clock, continued, "Take 50 grams of sugar, add two teaspoons of water, and mix it slowly. Once it becomes thick and glossy, dip the top of the cream puff in it."
「わかった。」
"Got it."

Just as Wakatta-san was about to get the sugar,
ゾウが、きゅうに 立ちあがって、「ようし、ぼくが やってやるよ。その アイシングってやつ。」
the elephant suddenly stood up and said, "I’ll do it! I’ll make that icing!"
のっし、のっのっ と あるいて いって、さとうの ふくろを、五ふくろ もってきました。
The elephant lumbered over and grabbed five bags of sugar.
「みんな やっちゃえ、思いきり あまくしてやる。」
"Let’s use it all up and make everything extra sweet!"
インコは、それを 見て、「あんた、気が くるったの？そんなに 作ったって、むだでしょ。」
Seeing this, the parrot cried, "You’ve gone crazy! That’s way too much sugar!"
「いいだろう。やったって。」
"Doesn’t matter! I’ll do it anyway."
「たくましくったって、いさましくたって、あんたなんか、きらいっ。」
"You may be strong, but I still don’t like you!" snapped the parrot.
「ぼく だって.....。」
"Well, I don’t like you either!"
ゾウは、はなを 思いきり のばして、ぶいーっ ふぅっ 時計を ふきました。
The elephant stretched out his trunk and blew with all his might—*whoooosh*—right at the clock.
とたんに、インコは 時計の 中に ふきこまれ、はりが、ぐるぐる まわりだしました。
The parrot was blown back into the clock, and the hands of the clock started spinning uncontrollably.
とまりません。
It does not stop.
とー。
Then,
はりが まわるのと いっしょに、さとうの ふくろが はじけて、中から さとうが あふれだしました。
At the same time, the bags of sugar burst open, and sugar began spilling everywhere.

ゆかに さとうの 山ができ、山が くずれて、へやじゅうが さとうだらけ。

ゾウは、「こいつに 水を まぜて、かきまぜれば いいんだろ。」

水道の 水を 出し、はなに すいこんで、ぶふーっ さとうの 上にかけ、はなで かきまぜ はじめました。
He sucked water from the tap into his trunk and sprayed it over the sugar, then started mixing it with his trunk.
わかったさんは、「やめて。」
"Stop it!" cried Wakatta-san.
もう、ひざの あたりまで、さとうだらけ なのです。
By now, the sugar was knee-deep.
「やめないよ。」
"I won’t stop!" shouted the elephant.
わかったさんは、にげだしました。
Wakatta-san fled from the room.
げんかんに 出るところで、大きな 鳥かごから、アイさんを 出して あげました。
On his way out, he opened the door to the large birdcage and set Mrs. Ai free.
「にげなさい。ここにいたら、さとうづけに なっちゃう。」
"Run! If you stay here, you’ll be buried in sugar!"
「ありがとよ。」
"Thanks!"
アイさんは、はねも ないのに、窓から、とびだして いって しまいました。
Mrs. Ai, even without wings, somehow managed to fly out of the window.
もう、足もとまで、どろどろに とけた さとうが おいかけて きています。
By now, the melted sugar had reached Wakatta-san's feet and was chasing her.
げんかんの ドアを あけたとき、ついに、おいつかれました。
When he opened the door, the sugar caught up with her.
おいつかれた とたん、アイシングに すべって、ひっくりかえって、ザバッ 頭を うってしまいました。
As soon as it did, Wakatta-san slipped on the icing, fell, and hit his head with a thud.

おきあがって、びっくりしました。

そこは、雪の つもった、わかったさんの おみせの 前でした。

わかったさんは、そばに あった 雪を すくって なめて みました。

すぐに 思い出しました。これから、レイおくさんの 家に いかなくてはー。

Wakatta-san climbed onto her little wagon and set off.

レイおくさんは、おこっては いませんでした。
But Mrs. Lei wasn’t angry.
わかったさんを 見ると、「ああら、さっそく、ペンダント してくれてるのね。気に いってくれて、ありがとう。」
When she saw Wakatta-san, she said, "Oh, you’re already wearing the pendant I gave you. I’m so glad you like it."
わかったさんは、うれしくなって、「たくましくって、いさましくって、わたし、すきです。」
Wakatta-san smiled and said, "It’s strong, brave, and I love it."

「でも、ときどき、ひねくれて、いたずら するみたい。」

それで、「じゃあ、ときどき、あわてて、わすれもの しないようにね。」

コートを あずかって、おみせに かえります。
After picking up the coat, Wakatta-san started heading back to his shop.
とちゅうで、アイさんの 家の 前を とおります。「.....よし。わたしが じぶんで シュークリームを 作って、もって いって あげよう。お金なんて いらないわ っていったら、アイさん、よろこぶかもね。」
As he passed by Mrs. Ai's house, she thought to herself, "I’ll bake some cream puffs myself and bring them to her. No charge. Maybe that will make her happy."
学校の うらの、おスギおばさんの 家も とおります。
She also passed by Mrs. Osugi’s house.
「ピーコは、森にー？」
"Peeko must be in the forest..."
よりみちして、公園に いって みました。
She decided to take a detour and went into the park.

「ピーコ、ありがとう。シュークリームの 作りかた、しっかり おぼえた からね。」と いいました。
"Thank you, Peeko. I’ve learned how to make cream puffs now," she said aloud.
わかったさんは、たしかに そのとき、鳥の はばたく 音を きいたのです。
Wakatta-san was certain that, at that moment, she heard the sound of wings flapping.
日よう日は、わかったさんの おみせも、やすみです。
On Sundays, Wakatta-san’s shop is closed.
わかったさんは、シュークリームを 作りました。インコが いった 分量で、三十こ できました。
Wakatta-san spent her day off making cream puffs. Following the parrot’s recipe, she made 30 of them.
レイおくさんに 五こ、とどけました。
She delivered five cream puffs to Mrs. Lei.
アイさんにも、五こ、とどけました。
She delivered five cream puffs to Ai-san.
そして おスギおばさんにも、五こ。とどけに いって びっくりしました。
And when she brought five cream puffs to Mrs. Osugi, she was shocked.
「あれからすぐ、ピーコが かえって きたんですよ。」
"Right after you left, Peeko came home!" she exclaimed.
わかったさんは、いいました。「わたし、わかってたの。」
"I knew she would," Wakatta-san said.
