わかったさんは、クリーニングやさんです。
Wakatta-san is a cleaner.
小さなな ワゴンで せんたくものの はいたつに でかけます。
She goes out in her small van to deliver laundry.
おとうさんが、「でんしゃの ふみきりでは、いったん とまってから、わたるんだぞ。」と いうと、「わかった、わかった。」
When her father says, "You need to stop and check before crossing the railway," she replies, "Got it, got it."
おかあさんが、「きょうは、集金だから、お金を おとすんじゃないよ。」と いうと、」わかった、わかった。」
When her mother says, "You're collecting payments today, so don't lose the money," she again says, "Got it, got it."
それで、わかったさんと よばれるように なったのでした。
That's how she came to be called "Wakatta-san" (the lady who says "Got it").
きょうは、四丁目を まわる日です。
Today is the day to visit the customers in Area 4.
四丁目は、はたけの おおい、しずかな ところです。
Area 4 is a quiet area with lots of fields.
ずっと 山の ほうまでが、四丁目です。
It stretches all the way to the mountains.
いつも、山の ふもとから まわって、町の ほうに かえって くるのです。
She always starts from the base of the mountain and works her way back into town.
まず、ふみきりを わたって.....。
First, she crosses the railway.
「いったん、とまる。」
"Stop first."
てまえで、とまって、でんしゃが こないのを たしかめて、
She stops, checks that no trains are coming, and then,
「ゴー。」
"Go!"
ところが、プツン！
But suddenly, "Putt!"
エンジンが とまって しまいました。
The engine stops.
わかったさんは、キーを まわして、エンジンを かけなおそうと しましたが、だめです。
Wakatta-san tries to restart the engine by turning the key, but it doesn’t work.
「やだあ、こしょうだわ。」
"Oh no, it's broken."
ふみきりの てまえで とまっていては、ほかの 車の じゃまです。
Stopping right before the railway is blocking other cars.
「こまったなあ。」
"What a problem,"
が、車は やってこないし、人も とおりません。
but no cars are coming, and no people are passing by either.
そのうちに、ふみきりが しまって、でんしゃが とおりすぎました。
Eventually, the railway gates close, and a train rushes past.
ガーブイイイイン ゴーッ
Gaaaa-rooooosh!
ふみきりが、あきました。
The railway gates opened.
とー。
Then,
むこうから、ウサギが やってきたのです。
from the other side, a rabbit appears.
ふくを きた ウサギです。
It's a rabbit wearing clothes.
ちょうネクタイを した、おしゃれ ウサギです。
A fashionable rabbit with a bow tie.
ウサギは、「やあ、おこまりのようですね。おてつだい しましょう。」
"Hello, you seem to be in trouble. Let me help you," the rabbit says.
そういって、わかったさんの ワゴンの うしろに まわって、へんな うたを うたいました。
He goes behind Wakatta-san's van and sings a strange song.
ツワラ ツツテト おせ せーの！
"Tsuwara tsuteto, push, heave-ho!"
すると、ワゴンが うごいたのです。
And then, the van starts moving!
わかったさんは、ハンドルを にぎって、車を 道の わきに よせました。
Wakatta-san grips the steering wheel and pulls the van to the side of the road.
それにしても、なんと 力もちの ウサギでしょう。
What a strong rabbit!
わかったさんが、車から おりて、「たすかったわあ。ありがとう。」と いうと、また、へんな へんじが かえって きました。
As Wakatta-san gets out of the van and says, "Thank you, that was a big help," the rabbit replies with another strange answer.
「おれいに、リンゴを 一つ、あげましょう。」
"Let me give you an apple as thanks."
「.....。」
"....."
「このリンゴで、アップルパイを、作ってください。」
"Please make an apple pie with this."
「えっ？」
"What?"
「きょうは、五番地の ナガオさんの けっこんしきです。おいわいに、アップルパイを もっていきたいんです。」
"Today is the wedding of Mr. Nagao from Block 5. I'd like to bring an apple pie as a gift."
「ナガオさん？」
"Mr. Nagao?"
「いそいでください。ぼく、十二番地の シロタです。とどけてください。」
"Hurry, I'm Mr. Shirota from Block 12. Please deliver it."
おかしいのです。
It was strange.
ナガオさんも、シロタさんも、おとくいさんです。
She knew both Mr. Nagao and Mr. Shirota—they were regular customers,
番地も あっています。
and the addresses were correct.
でも、シロタさんは、ウサギじゃありません。
But Mr. Shirota isn't a rabbit.
ウサギは、「たのみます。」と いって、はしって いってしまいました。
The rabbit ran off, saying, "I'm counting on you."
わかったさんは、なんだか わからなく なりました。
Wakatta-san, feeling confused,
リンゴを ポケットに いれて、ぼんやり、ぽかあん。
put the apple in her pocket and stared blankly,
でも、しごとだけは わすれません。
but she didn't forget her job.
「そうだわ。」近くの ハラダさんの うちに とどけものが ありました。
"Oh." There were items to deliver to the Harada household nearby."
集金も あります。
She also had to collect payment.
ハラダさんの うちで、でんわを かりて、しゅうりやさんを たのめば いい.....。
Maybe she could use their phone to call a repairman.

わかったさんから、せんたくした シーツを うけとりました。
The raccoon took the cleaned sheets from Wakatta-san
それから、また、ポンと たたいて、
and then, patting its belly again, said,
「わかったさんも おいで。もし、せんたくものに、あなが あいていたら、えらいことに なる。」
"Come with me. If there’s a hole in the laundry, it’ll be a disaster."
「あななんか、あけませんよ。」
"I won’t put any holes in it!"
「いいから、おいで。」むりやり、うでを ひっぱられて、いったところは にわでした。
"Just come," the raccoon insisted, pulling her by the arm heading into the backyard.
にわと いっても、ただの 草ばら みたいな ところです。
It was just an empty field, really.
そこに、大きな かごが あって、 かごの中には、なにやら きかいが のっています。
There was a big basket there, and inside it, some sort of machine.
ハラダさんは、土の 上で、シーツを ひろげだしました。
Mr. Harada laid the sheets out on the ground.
わかったさんは、びっくりしました。
Wakatta-san was astonished.
びっくりして、目を とじることが できなく なりました。
She couldn't stop staring.
シーツです。
It was a sheet.
たたんだ シーツを ひろげるのですが、ひろげても、ひろげても、まだ ひろがるのです。
Even though they had folded the sheet, it kept spreading and spreading!
「ううっ、えっ、ど、ど、どうしたの。」
"Wha-what’s happening?"
にわ いっぱいに ひろがって、
It stretched out to fill the entire yard.
「ようし。」

ハラダさんは、こんどは、シーツの はしの ところに、ロープを むすびはじめました。

シーツが ふくらんで、大きな ふうせんの ように あたまを もたげました。
The sheet inflated, turning into a huge balloon.
ハラダさんは、「さあ、のるんだ、 わかったさん。」
"Get in, Wakatta-san."
わかったさんを だきあげて、かごの 中に ほうりこみました。
He picked her up and tossed her into the basket.
「やだあ、 こわい！」
"No, this is scary!"
さけんだときは、もう、空に うかんで いました。
She screamed, but by then, she was already floating in the sky.
バルーンは、わかったさん ひとりを のせて、上へ、上へと、とんで いきました。
The balloon carried Wakatta-san up, up into the air.
はじめは こわかった わかったさんも、だんだん なれてきました。
At first, Wakatta-san was scared, but soon she got used to it.
下を 見ると、きれいな けしきです。
She looked down and saw beautiful scenery.
みどりいろの 山が 下に あるし、むこうに 海が 見えてきました。
Green mountains below, and in the distance, the sea was coming into view.
わかったさんの バルーンの かげが、はたけの 上を すべって いきます。
The shadow of Wakatta-san’s balloon slid over the fields below.
「すてき！」
"How wonderful!"
そのうちにも、バルーンは、どんどん のぼって いくようです。
The balloon continued to rise, higher and higher.
もう、けしきが 見えなく なりました。
Soon, the scenery disappeared.
わかったさんは、 しんぱいに なりました。
Wakatta-san started to worry.
「どこまで いくのかしら。」
"How high are we going?"
だんだん、さむく なってきます。
It was getting colder.
バーナーの 火が、ゴウゴウ もえて いなければ、こごえて しまいそうです。
If the burner didn’t keep roaring, she would freeze.
「もう いいわ。おりたいっ。」
"I want to get down now."
と いってみても、 わかったさんには、バルーンの そうじゅうが、わかりません。
She tried saying, but Wakatta-san didn’t know how to control the balloon.
バルーンは、まっ白な くもを とびこえようと しています。
It was about to fly over a white cloud.
「たすけてっ。」さけんだ ときです。
She cried out, "Help!"
くもの 上から、「おお、クリーニングやの わかったさん じゃな。」と いう こえ。
Just then, a voice came from above the cloud, saying "well, well, if it isn’t Wakatta-san from the cleaners."
こえの ほうを 見ると、かみなりさまが、まっかな からだで たって いるでは ありませんか。
Looking up, she saw a thunder god in red standing on the cloud.
赤おにの かみなりさまです。
It was red demon thunder god.
「たのんで おいた リンゴを とどけて くれたんだね。 ありがとよ。」
"You’ve brought the apple I asked for, haven’t you? Thanks."
わかったさんは、こわいのも わすれて、「わたし、クリーニングやよ。リンゴなんて、とどけない。」と さけびました。
Forgetting her fear, Wakatta-san shouted back, "I’m just a cleaner! I’m not delivering apples!"
「けしからん。わからんやつだ。」
"How rude. You don’t get it, do you?"
きゅうに、かみなりさまは、口を すぼめて、フゥーッ スウー と、いきを すいこんだ ようでした。
Suddenly, the thunder god pursed his lips and began sucking in air, "Fuuuu-suuu!"
と、バルーンは、それに すいよせられて、のぼるのを やめました。
The balloon was pulled down toward him.
くもの 上に、ちゃくりく。
It landed on the cloud.
かみなりさまは、 すうのを やめて、「おりなさい。」と いいました。
The thunder god stopped sucking in air and said, "Get down."
わかったさんが、かごから とびおりると、「さむいっ。つめたい。」
When Wakatta-san jumped out of the basket, she shivered, "It’s so cold!"
からだが しびれるくらい、つめたいのです。
Her body was so cold it tingled.
かみなりさまは、「だらしのない 人間だ。」と いって、こんどは、わかったさんに いきを ふきかけました。
The thunder god said, "Humans are so careless," and blew on her.
すると、わかったさんは、ビニールの ような、こおりの ふくを きているの でした。
Wakatta-san found herself wearing a vinyl kind ice suit.
とうめいな ふくです。
It was transparent suit.
くつも、てぶくろも、ぼうしまで かぶって、うごくと ぴかてか ひかる のでした。
Gloves, shoes, and even a hat too, and they shine as she moves.
「たすかったあ。」こおりの ふくの おかげで、からだが あたたかく なりました。
"Saved by this ice suit," she thought, feeling warm again.
かみなりさまは、いいました。
The thunder god said,
「はたらいて いるもんで、 のどが かわいた。はやく リンゴを 出しなさい。ポケットに はいってるじゃろ。」
"I’ve been working, and now I’m thirsty. Hurry up and give me the apple—it’s in your pocket, isn’t it?"
「えっ？」
"Huh?"
かみなりさまは、なんでも しっているのです。
The thunder god seemed to know everything.
わかったさんは、こおりの ふくを、キシキシ いわせて、リンゴを とりだしました。
Wakatta-san pulled out the apple, as the ice suit creaking.
「.....でも.....これ。」
"But...this...."
「アップルパイを 作るんじゃろ。わるいようには せん。よこしなさい。」
"You’re making an apple pie, right? Don’t worry, hand it over."
かみなりさまは、リンゴを ひったくると、ワシワシと、かわごと たべて しまいました。
The thunder god snatched the apple and ate it whole,
しん だけ のこして、「リンゴの いのちは、しんに ある。だいじに とって おくが いい。」かえして よこしました。
leaving only the core and handing it back to her, he said "The life of the apple is in its core. Keep it safe."
わかったさんは、ポケットに しまって、「こまったわ。アップルパイが できないわ。」
Wakatta-san tucked the core into her pocket, and said, "But I can't make an apple pie"
「リンゴが あっても、パイきじが なくては、できんじゃろ。」

ついていくと、こおりの 家が ありました。まるで れいぞうこです。

「よくきくが いい。まずは ざいりょう。 小麦粉 120グラム バター 80グラム 水 75CC
"Listen carefully. First, the ingredients: 120 grams of flour, 80 grams of butter, and 75cc of water.
バターを １センチ 角に きざんで、小麦粉に まぶすように まぜる。」

わかったさんは、びっくり しました。早わざ なのです。
Wakatta-san was amazed at the thunder god’s speed.
「わかんない。」と いっても、きいては くれません。
"I don't understand," she muttered, but he didn’t stop.
「これを 三十分、ねかせる。ここでは、このままだが、人間だったら れいぞうこに いれるが よい。 さぎょうは すべて、さむいところで やらねばならん。」
"Let it rest for thirty minutes. Here, we leave it as is, but if you were human, you’d put it in the fridge. All steps must be done in the cold."
三十分ー。
Thirty minutes—
わかったさんは、じぶんの うでどけいを 見ました。
Wakatta-san looked at her watch.
が、どうしたことか、はりが すごい スピードで まわるのです。
But for some reason, the hands were spinning rapidly.
まばたきを 二かい している うちに、三十分.....。
By the time she blinked twice, thirty minutes had passed.
こなを ふるった だいに おき のす のす のばす

「わかった。れいぞうこに いれるのね。」

はじめて 「わかった。」と いえました。
For the first time, she said, "Got it."
また、とけいを 見て、あっというまに 二十分。
She looked at her watch again, and before she knew it, twenty minutes had passed.
そして、かおを あげたら、「え、えっ！」
When she looked up, "What?!"
どこかで 見たような ところでした。

わかったさんは、かんがえました。

すぐ そばが 山です。

すぐまえに、もんが あって、ずっと 木の さくが まわっていて.....。

「クマノさんの 家だわ」
"This must be Mr. Kumano's house."
そうに ちがい ありません。

わかったさんの、いちばん とおくの おとくいさんです。
Mr. Kumano was her farthest customer.
「こんにちは。クリーニングやでーす。」
"Hello, it’s the cleaners!"
わかったさんは、げんきに もんを くぐって げんきに 家の ドアを あけました。
Wakatta-san cheerfully passed through the gate and knocked on the door.
すると、げんかんに、せんたくものの 山が ありました。
The entrance was filled with laundry.
「まってたのよお。」
"I’ve been waiting!"
その山を かきわけて 出てきたのは、クマノさん.....では なくて、クマの おばさん でした。
Through the pile of laundry, instead of Mrs. Kumano—Mrs. Bear appeared.
「こんなに たまっちゃって、こまってたの。おねがい するわ。」
"All this laundry’s piled up! I need your help."
わかったさんは びっくり しました。
Wakatta-san was stunned.
びっくりして、「あのー。車が こしょうして、リンゴが 一こ。パイを たのまれて、集金です。」
Surprised, she blurted out, “Uh... the car broke down, I’ve got just one apple, and I’m here to collect payment.”
へんな ことを いって しまいました。
She said something strange without thinking.
すると、クマおばさんは、「あら、そう。アップルパイね。リンゴは、四つに わって、かわを むいて、しんを とるのよ。それから、あつさ 五ミリの うす切りに して、なべに いれるのよ。」
In response, Mrs. Bear said, “Oh, I see. Apple pie, right? First, cut the apple into quarters, peel it, and remove the core. Then slice it thinly, about 5 millimeters thick, and put it into a pot.”
わかったさんは、あわてました。
Wakatta-san panicked.
「ちがうの。リンゴ、ないのよ。」

ポケットを さぐったら、かみなりさまの たべのこしの しんが はいって いました。
She checked her pocket and found only the apple core that Thunder God had left behind.
クマおばさんは、かまわずに いうのです。
But Mrs. Bear continued, undeterred.
「リンゴは、三こ いるわね。三ことも、おなじ うす切りに して.....。リンゴを にるんだけど、お水を いれちゃ だめ。おさとう 100グラムと、レモンじる 半こぶん、それを よく まぶして、二十分 なじませてね。」
“You’ll need three apples. Slice all three thinly the same way... You’re going to cook the apples, but don’t add any water. Instead, sprinkle 100 grams of sugar and the juice of half a lemon over them, then let them sit for 20 minutes.”
わかったさんは、うんざり しました。
Wakatta-san was exasperated.
「だからさあ、リンゴが ないの。」
“That’s what I’m saying—I don’t have any apples!”
「二十分 たったら、ちぎった バター 20グラム、レーズン 大さじ 二はいを いれて、十分間、ことこと にて ちょうだい。」
“After 20 minutes, add 20 grams of butter and two tablespoons of raisins, then simmer it for ten minutes.”
「.....。」
“...”
「ふたを しちゃ だめよ。バターの つつみがみを かぶせると いいわ。それだけ。」
“Don’t cover the pot. You can put the butter wrapper on top instead. That’s all.”
わかったさんは、がまんが できなく なって、さけびました。「わかった、わかった！」
Wakatta-san couldn’t hold back any longer and yelled, “I get it, I get it!”
やっと クマおばさんの 口が とまったので、
Finally, Mrs. Bear stopped talking.
「リンゴが ないのよ、おばさん。」と いうと、
“I don’t have any apples, Mrs.” she repeated.
「あら、そう。」
“Oh, I see.”
クマおばさんは、せんたくものを ふみつけながら、げんかんから そとに 出ました。
Mrs. Bear stepped outside, trampling over some laundry, and then turned to Wakatta-san.
そして、わかったさんの ほうに ふりむくと、「あんた、リンゴの しんを もって いるわね。リンゴの しんには、いのちが あるのよ。つまり、たねと いうこと.....。」
“You’ve got the apple core, don’t you? You know, the core holds the seed, and the seed is the life of the apple.”
かみなりさまと おなじことを いいます。
She said the same thing Thunder God had mentioned earlier.
わかったさんは、「しんを どうするの？」と ききました。
“What should I do with the core?” Wakatta-san asked.
「わかってる じゃない。あんた、リンゴが ないって いったわね。なければ、たねを うえれば いい。やがて めが 出て 木に なって、花が さいて、みが なるわ。」
“You know what to do. You said you didn’t have apples, right? If you don’t have any, plant the seed. It will sprout, grow into a tree, bloom flowers, and then bear fruit.”
わかったさんは、はらが たってきました。
Wakatta-san was starting to get frustrated.
「そんな、のんきな こと いってられないわ。ナガオさんの けっこんしきは、きょうなのよ。」
“I don’t have time for that! Nagao-san’s wedding is today!”
そう いっても、クマおばさんは、「そんなこと わかってる。きょうなら まに あうわ。あしたじゃ だめだけど。」
But Mrs, Bear calmly replied, “I know. You’ll make it if it’s today. Tomorrow would be too late, though.”
と いって、シャベルで、もんの わきに 小さい あなを ほりました。
With that, she dug a small hole next to the gate with a shovel.
「さあ、しんを うめて.....。」
“Now, plant the seed.”
わかったさんから リンゴの しんを とりあげて、あなに うめました。
She took the apple core from Wakatta-san and placed it in the hole.
土を かぶせてから、
As covering it with dirt, she said
「はあやく めを 出せ、リンゴの たねよ。出さぬと、おまえを、ほじくるぞ。」と いって、シャベルで 土を トントン たたきました。
“Grow quickly, apple seed. If you don’t, I’ll dig you up!” she said, tapping the soil with her shovel.
すると、土の中から、「わかった、わかった。」と こえが して、めが ニョキッ。
Then, from under the soil, a voice replied, “I understand, I understand,” and a little sprout poked through the earth.
クマおばさんは、「はやく 木に なれ、リンゴの め。ならぬと、おまえを、つっつくぞ。」と いって、シャベルで つく まねを しました。
Mrs. Bear then said, “Grow into a tree quickly, apple sprout. If you don’t, I’ll poke you!” mimicking poking with the shovel.
すると、「わかった、わかった。」と こえが して、ヌクヌク、ズンガズンガ、木に なりました。
Again, the voice said, “I understand, I understand,” and the sprout quickly grew into a tree.
こんどは、「はあやく みが なれ、リンゴの 木、ならぬと、おまえを、たたき切る。」と いって シャベルで 木を ツンコツンコ たたきました。
Next, Mrs. Bear tapped the tree with the shovel, saying, “Grow fruit quickly, apple tree. If you don’t, I’ll chop you down.”
すると、「わかった、わかった。」見るまに 白い 花が さいて、一度 まばたき したら、リンゴの 赤い みが、ワッサユッサと ゆれていました。
Then again, the voice replied, “I understand, I understand,” and, in the blink of an eye, white flowers bloomed. Then, with another blink, red apples appeared, hanging heavily from the branches.
「ほうらね、リンゴが できたでしょ。」クマおばさんが いいました。
“There, see? You’ve got apples now,” Mrs. Bear said with a smile.
そして、「うちの だいどころを かして あげるわ。リンゴを 三つ とって、さあ、アップルパイ作りよ。」
“Come to my kitchen, and I’ll help you make your apple pie. Pick three apples.”
わかったさんは、おしえられた とおりに リンゴを にました。
Wakatta-san followed her instructions and cooked the apples.
が、わかったさんは こまりました。
But then, she ran into a problem.
「......でも、わたし、パイきじが できない。」
“...But I don’t know how to make the pie dough.”
クマおばさんは、どんなときでも あわてません。
Mrs. Bear unfazed any situations.
どこかに でんわを して、「おねがいします。」と、でんわを 切ったとき、
She made a phone call, “Please, thank you,” she said and hung up.
「おまちどうさま。」
“Here you go,”
げんかんに はいって きた 人を 見て、わかったさんは びっくり しました。
Wakatta-san was shocked as she saw the person arrived at the entrance.
なんと、かみなりさま だったのです。
It was Thunder God!
「パイシート、もってきました。つかうときには ひとばん れいぞうこに おいて かいとう して ください。なにしろ、カチンカチンに れいとう してあります からね。」

わかったさんが、なにか いおうと すると、あたりが、ていでん したように くらく なりました。そして、すぐ あかるく なったとき、もう、かみなりさまの すがたは ありませんでした。
Before Wakatta-san could say anything, the surroundings darkened as if the power had gone out. When the light returned, Thunder God had already disappeared.
クマおばさんは、「さあ、ひとばん たったわ。れいぞうこから、パイシートを 出しなさい。」と いいました。
Mrs. Bear said, “It’s been overnight. Take the pie sheets out of the fridge.”
「ええっ？」
“What?!”
それから あとの ことは、わかったさんは もう、じぶんで なにを やっているのか、わかりませんでした。

ひとりでに、手が うごくのです。

パイシートを、たて よこに 20センチの 正方形に 切って、パイざらに はりつけ、四すみを 切って フォークで つついて あなを あけます。(空気ぬきのあな)
She cut the pie sheets into 20-centimeter squares and pressed them into the pie dish, trimming the corners and poking holes with a fork to release the steam.
のこった パイシートで、1センチはばの おびを つくって、といた たまごの きみを のりに して、まわりに ふちを つくります。
She cut the remaining pie sheets into 1-centimeter strips, brushed them with egg yolk, and made a decorative border around the pie.
ふちの 中に、にえた リンゴを こんもりと つめ こみます。

わかったさんには、じぶんで やっていることが、よく わからないのです。

かおを 出したのは、シロタさんと いう ウサギでした。

わかったさんが、「できたらしいわ。」と いって、オーブンの ドアを あけようと すると、クマおばさんが、「だめっ。」
Wakatta-san said, “It looks ready,” and reached for the oven door, but Mrs. Bear stopped her.
パイ作りの かぎは やきかたよ
"The key to pie-making is how you bake it,
つぎは ポッポッと 200度で パイは ポッポッとおちついて 十分たったら ふくれきる
Now drop it to 200 degrees. The pie will settle. After ten minutes, it will be full!"
それから ジワジワ 180度 パイは ジワジワ 火がとおり 十分たったら パリッと あがる
"And then, slow it down to 180 degrees. The pie will cook slowly. After ten minutes, it will crisp up."
クマおばさんが、「よろしい。」と いいました。

わかったさんは、クマおばさんに てつだって もらって、アップルパイを、きれいに つつみました。

ピンクの リボンを かけて、「じゃあ、とどけに いって くるわ。」と いって、でかけました。

おどろいて、気が つくと、わかったさんは ウエディング・ドレスを きていました。

「まあ、きれいな 花よめさん！」ウサギの シロタさんが いいました。
“Oh my, what a beautiful bride!” Shirota the Rabbit exclaimed.
「これより、リスの ナガオさんと、わかったさんの けっこんしきを はじめます。」
“And now, we will begin the wedding ceremony of Nagao the Squirrel and Wakatta-san.”
そしてまた、音楽が、しずかに ながれ だしました。
The music started again, softly filling the room.
みんなは、わかったさんが 作った アップルパイを、おいしそうに たべました。
Everyone enjoyed the apple pie that Wakatta-san had made.
シロタさんが いいました。「花よめの わかったさんに、みんなから、プレゼントが あります。どうぞ、そとを ごらんください。」
Shirota-san said, “The bride Wakatta-san has a gift from everyone. Please, look outside.”
そこには、わかったさんの ワゴンが ありました。
Outside was Wakatta-san’s wagon.
「あれっ？.....」
“Huh?”
わかったさんは、そとに 出ました。
Wakatta-san stepped outside.
のって、ためしに キーを まわして みました。
She got in the wagon and turned the key.

エンジンが かかりました。

とたんに、わかったさんは、もとの すがたに なって いました。

ふみきりを わたった ところに、とまって いたのです。

わかったさんは、それから 四丁目の おとくいさんを まわりました。
Wakatta-san then made her usual rounds, delivering to her customers in the neighborhood.
ナガオさんも、シロタさんも、ハラダさんも、クマノさんも、みんな まわりました。
She visited Nagao-san, Shirota-san, Harada-san, and Kumano-san.
が、ふだんと おなじでした。
Everything seemed just as usual.
「.....わたし、アップルパイの 作りかた わすれちゃった。おぼえて おけば よかったな。」と 思いましたが、もう おそい。
“...I’ve forgotten how to make apple pie. I should have remembered,” Wakatta-san thought, but it was too late.
しかし、ふしぎな ことは、これで おわりでは ありませんでした。

かえりに、本やさんの まえを とおったら、「おうい、わかったさん。」よびとめられました。
On her way home, she passed by a bookstore and heard someone call out, “Hey, Wakatta-san!”

わかったさんは、「ありがとう。わたしの 本、ね。」と いって、ワゴンを はしらせ ました。
“Thank you. It’s my book, isn’t it?” Wakatta-san said, then drove off in her wagon.
