むかしむかし、あるとおころに、ひとりの 男がいました。
Long, long ago, in a certain place, there lived a man.
ある日、男はゆめの中で こんな声を 聞きました。
One day, the man had a dream and heard a voice.
「さいしょに さわったものを、手から はなさないように しなさい。きっと、いいことが ありますよ。」
"Do not let go of the first thing you touch. Something good will surely happen."
男は目を さましました。
The man woke up.
ふしぎな ゆめだったと 思いながら、外へ出て 歩きだしたとたん、うっかり、ころんでしまいました。
He thought it was a strange dream and went outside. As soon as he started walking, he accidentally tripped and fell.
おき上がろうと したときです。男の手に、一本のわらしべが ふれました。
As he tried to get up, his hand touched a single piece of straw.
男はそれを つかみました。
He grasped it.
わらしべを もったまま、歩いていくと、あぶが とんできました。
While walking with the straw in hand, a horsefly buzzed around him.
ぶうん、ぶうん。
Buzz, buzz.
いくら おいはらっても、また とんできます。
No matter how much he tried to shoo it away, it kept coming back.
男は あぶを つかまえると、わらしべに むすびつけました。
The man caught the horsefly and tied it to the straw.
そして、それを もったまま、歩きつづけました。
Holding this, he continued walking.
むこうの方から、男の子と その母親が やって来ます。
From a distance, he saw a boy and his mother approaching.
そばまで来ると、母親は、男にむかって、こうたのみました。
As they got closer, the mother spoke to the man.
「子どもが、どうしても あぶの ついた わらしべを ほしいと 言うのです。すみませんが、この みかんと、こうかんして くれませんか。」
"My child insists on having that straw with the horsefly. I'm sorry, but could we trade it for these tangerines?"
「ええ、いいですよ。どうぞ。」
"Sure, that's fine. Here you go."
わらしべを わたすと、母親は、大きなみかんを 三つくれました。
After handing over the straw, the mother gave him three large tangerines.
わらしべが みかんに なるなんて、おれは うんが いいなあ、と思いながら、男は先へ すすみました。
The man thought, "I am lucky that the straw turned into oranges," and continued on.
しばらく行くと、木のねもとに、女の人が すわりこんでいました。
After a while, he saw a woman sitting under a tree.
「どうんしたのですか。だいじょうぶですか。」
"What happened? Are you alright?"
「ああ、のどが かわいて、少しも歩けないのです。水をおもちでは ないですか。」
"Oh, I am so thirsty that I cannot walk any further. Do you have any water?"
「水は もっていませんけど、そうだ、ここに、みかんなら あります。どうぞ。」
"I don't have water, but I have some tangerines. Here you go."
女の人は、うなずくと、みかんを うけとりました。
The woman nodded and accepted the tangerines.
そして、かわをむいて、口に入れました。
She peeled one and started eating.
「ありがとう。みかんのしるが、のどを うるおしてくれました。本当に たすかりました。おれいに、このぬのを さしあげます。」
"Thank you. The tangerine juice quenched my thirst. You really helped me. Please take this cloth as a token of my gratitude."
女の人は、男に きれいなぬのを くれました。
The woman gave the man a beautiful cloth.
ぬえはきものに なる ぬのです。
It was cloth that could be made into a kimono.
さらに歩いていくと、道ばたに 馬が たおれていました。
As he continued walking, he saw a horse lying by the roadside.
馬のそばには、もちぬしが 立っています。
Its owner was standing nearby.
「どうしたのですか。」
"What happened?"
「馬が うごがかなくなって、こまっています。しかたないので、ここに すてていこうがと 思っています。」
"My horse has stopped moving and I am at a loss. I have no choice but to leave it here."
「それは かわいそうです。このきれいな ぬのを さしあげますから、わたしに その馬を ゆずってください。」
"That is unfortunate. I will give you this beautiful cloth in exchange for the horse."
馬のもちぬしは、うれしそうに ぬのを うけとると、立ちさりました。
The horse's owner gladly accepted the cloth and left.
男が やさしく せわを すると、馬は元気を とりもどし、立ち上がりました。
When the man gently cared for the horse, it regained its strength and stood up.
男は 馬にのって、先へ すすみました。
The man mounted the horse and continued on.
そのうちに、大きな やしきの前を 通りかかりました。
Eventually, he came across a large mansion.
やしきの 中から、その家の しゅじんが、手をふりながら 出てきました。
From inside, the owner of the mansion came out, waving his hand.
「おうい、その馬を くれないか。今から、たびに出るので、馬が ひつようなのだ。
"Hey, can you give me that horse? I am about to go on a journey and I need a horse.
そうだ、わたしのかわりに、このやしきに すんでくれ。
In exchange, why don't you stay in my mansion?
もし、わたしが、いつまで たっても もどって こなかったら、やしきは あなたに さしあげよう。」
If I do not return after a long time, you can have the mansion."
男は おどろきましたが、言われたとおり 馬を わたしました。
The man was surprised but handed over the horse as instructed.
そして、そのまま、やしきで くらしました。
He then lived in the mansion.
たびに 出た しゅじんは、何年たっても 帰ってきませんでした。
The owner who went on a journey never returned, even after many years.
やがて、やしきは、男のものに なりました。
Eventually, the mansion became the man's.
わらしべが、みかんになり、みかんが ぬのになり、ぬのが 馬になり、馬が やしきに なったのです。
The straw turned into tangerines, the tangerines turned into cloth, the cloth turned into a horse, and the horse turned into a mansion.
それで、人びとは、男のことを、わらしべちょうじゃ と よぶように なりました。
Thus, people began to call the man the Straw Millionaire.
