ある おおきな 木に、いっぴきの あおむしが いました。
In a big tree, there was a caterpillar.
あおむしは、まいにち 木の はを たべて、
からだが ちょうに かわる ひを まっていました。
Every day, the caterpillar ate the tree’s leaves, waiting for the day its body would transform into a butterfly.
ある とき、いつものように はを たべて いると、どこからか、
One day, as usual, while eating leaves, it heard a sound from somewhere,
むしゃむしゃ むしゃむしゃと、おとが きこえます。
Munch, munch, munch.
なんと、じぶんと そっくりな あおむしが、おなじ 木で はを たべて います。
To its surprise, another caterpillar, just like itself, was eating leaves on the same tree.
「だめ だめ。この 木は、ぼくの 木。ぼくの はっぱ。」
"No, no. This is my tree. These are my leaves," said the first caterpillar.
あおむしが いうと、その あおむしも いいました。
「この 木は、わたしの 木。だから、はっぱも、わたしの はっぱ。」
"This tree is mine. So, the leaves are mine too," replied the second caterpillar.
にひきが いいあいを していると、どこからか、もりもり もりもりと、おとが きこえます。
While the two were arguing, they heard another sound from somewhere, crunch, crunch, crunch.
なんと、じぶんたちと そっくりな あおむしが、おなじ 木で、はを たべています。
To their amazement, another caterpillar, just like them, was eating leaves on the same tree.
「その はっぱは、ぼくのだぞ。」と、いっぴきめが いいました。
"Those leaves are mine," said the first caterpillar.
「わたしの はっぱを たべないで。」と、にひきめも いいました。すると、
"Don't eat my leaves," said the second caterpillar. Then,
「そんな こと、しるものか。」さんびきめが いいかえしました。
"I don't care about that," the third caterpillar retorted.
あおむしたちは おおげんか。その ときです。
The caterpillars got into a big argument. Then suddenly,
「うるさいぞ。」おおきな 木が、ぐらりと ゆれて いいました。
"Quiet!" The big tree shook and spoke.
「みんな、もっと うえまで のぼって、そとの せかいを みて ごらん。」
"All of you, climb higher and look at the world outside."
あおむしたちは、いわれた とおりに、のぼって いきました。
The caterpillars did as they were told and climbed up.
いちばん たかい えだに つくと、さんびきは、めを まるく しました。
When they reached the highest branch, they were astonished.
この おおきな 木は、はやしの なかの たった いっぽんだったのです。
This big tree was the only one in the forest.
「ぼくら、こんなに ひろい ところのに いたんだね。」
"We were in such a vast place."
「そらも、こんなに ひろいんだね。」
"The sky is so wide."
とおくには うみが みえます。あおむしたちは、まだ うみを しりません。
In the distance, they could see the sea. The caterpillars had never seen the sea before.
「あの ひかって いる ところは、なんだろう。」
"What is that shining place?"
さんびきは、えだに ならぶと、せのびを しました。
The three caterpillars lined up on the branch and stretched.
「きれいだね。からだが ちょうに かわったら、あそこまで とんで みたいな。」
"It's beautiful. When my body turns into a butterfly, I want to fly there."
「わたしも、あそこまで とんで みたい。」
"Me too, I want to fly there."
「それなら、みんなで いこう。」
"Then, let’s all go together."
さんびきの あおむしは、やくそくを しました。
The three caterpillars made a promise.
そして、くんねり くんねり おりて いきました。
Then, they wiggled their way down.
木の はが、さらさら そよいで います。
The tree’s leaves rustled gently in the wind.
