あるひのこと ねこが ひよこを みつけました。
「しめしめ、ひよこが いるぞ。」
ねこは えさを まいて ひよこを おびきよせました。
「こっちに こい こい。いいこだ いいこだ。」
ねこは かんがえました。
「つかまえたら まるやきにして たべよう。」
ねこは もっと かんがえました。
「これを おおきくして たべたら いいじゃないか。そうしよう。」
「いや まてよ。たまごを うむまで まったって いいじゃないか。」
「そうしたら たまごやきと とりの まるやきと りょうほう たべられるんだ。そうしよう。」
ねこは もっと もっと かんがえました。
「いや まて まて。たべるのを ちょっと がまんしよう。そうすれば たまごを いっぱい うむよ。その たまごから ひよこが かえる。」
「そうしたら ひよこの まるやきと おやどりの まるやきと りょうほう いっぺんに たべられるんだ。そうしよう。」
「でも まてよ。ひよこを おおきくしてからだって おそくないじゃないか。」
「そうしたら おおきな とりの まるやきを いっぱい たべられる。これだ、これが いい。」
「いや まて まて、もっと いいことを かんがえたぞ。いっぱい いっぱい ふやしてからだって おそくないじゃないか。そうすれば.....」
「こんなふうに なる。これだ。ぜったい これに きめた。」
それから ねこは ひよこを そだて はじめました。
「おおきく おおきく なあれ......」
ひよこは こんなに おおきく なりました。
ねこは にこにこがおで いいました。
「そろそろ たまごを うむかな。」
まっても まっても とりは たまごを うまないのです。
そして あるひ、はねを ばたばた させると あっというまに そらへ とんで いって しまいました。
ひよこは かも だったのです。

**The Cat Who Was Too Greedy**
One day, a cat found a chick. "Aha, there's a chick," the cat thought. The cat scattered some food to lure the chick closer. "Come here, come here. Good, good." The cat thought, "Once I catch it, I’ll roast it and eat it." Then the cat thought a bit more, "Why not let it grow bigger before eating it? Yes, let's do that. Or wait, maybe I can wait until it lays eggs. Then I can have both scrambled eggs and roasted bird."
The cat thought even more, "No, wait, I’ll just hold off eating it a little longer. That way, it’ll lay plenty of eggs. From those eggs, chicks will hatch. Then I can have roasted chicks and roasted parent birds all at once. Yes, let’s do that." But the cat thought again, "Why not wait until the chicks grow bigger? Then I can have lots of large roasted birds. Yes, that’s the plan."
"Wait, wait, I’ve got an even better idea," the cat thought. "Why not wait until there are lots and lots of them? That’s it. That’s definitely the plan." So the cat began to raise the chick, saying, "Grow bigger and bigger." The chick grew this big.
The cat smiled and said, "Will it lay eggs soon?" But no matter how long it waited, the bird didn’t lay any eggs. Then one day, it flapped its wings and suddenly flew away into the sky.
The chick turned out to be a duck.
