エルフの ことを はなします。
This is the story of Elf.
エルフは、せかいで いちばん すばらしい 犬です。
Elf was the best dog in the world.
ぼくたちは、いっしょに 大きく なった。
We grew up together.
でも、エルフの ほうが、ずっと 早く、大きく なったよ。
But Elf grew up much faster than I did.
ぼくは、エルフの あったかい おなかを、いつも まくらに するのが すきだった。
I always loved using Elf's warm belly as a pillow.
そして、ぼくらは、いっしょに ゆめを 見た。
And we dreamed together.
にいさんや いもうとも、エルフの ことが 大すきだった。
My older brother and younger sister loved Elf too.
でも、エルフは ぼくの 犬だったんだ。
But Elf was my dog.
エルフと ぼくは、まい日 いっしょに あそんだ。
Elf and I played together every day.
エルフは、りすを おいかけるのが すきで、ママの 花だんを ほりかえすのが すきだった。
Elf loved chasing squirrels and digging up Mom's flower bed.
ときどき、エルフが わるさを すると、うちの かぞくは、すごく おこった。
Sometimes, when Elf was naughty, our family would get very angry.
でも、エルフを しかって いながら、みんなは、エルフの こと、大すきだった。
But even while scolding him, everyone still loved Elf very much.
すきなら すきと、いって やれば よかったのに、だれも、いって やらなかった。
We should have just told him how much we loved him, but no one did.
いわなくっても、わかると おもって いたんだね。
We thought he understood without us saying it.
いつしか、ときが たって いき、ぼくの せが、ぐんぐん のびる あいだに、エルフは、どんどん ふとって いった。
As time passed, I grew taller, and Elf got fatter.
エルフは、年を とって、ねて いる ことが おおく なり、さんぽを いやがるように なった。
Elf grew old, started sleeping a lot, and didn’t like going for walks anymore.
ぼくは、とても しんぱいした。
I was very worried.
ぼくたちは、エルフを じゅういさんに つれて いった。
We took Elf to the vet.
でも、じゅういさんにも、できる ことは なにも なかった。
But even the vet couldn't do anything.
「エルフは、年を とったんだよ。」
じゅういさんは、そう いった。
"Elf is just old," the vet said.
まもなく、エルフは、かいだんも 上がれなく なった。
Soon, Elf couldn't even climb the stairs anymore.
でも、エルフは、ぼくの へやで ねなくちゃ いけないんだ。
But Elf had to sleep in my room.
ぼくは、エルフに やわらかい まくらを やって、ねる まえには、かならず、
I gave Elf a soft pillow and every night before bed, I always said,
「エルフ、ずうっと、大すきだよ。」って、いって やった。
"Elf, I will always love you."
エルフは、きっと わかって くれたよね。
I'm sure Elf understood.
ある あさ、目を さますと、エルフが、しんで いた。
One morning, I woke up and found that Elf had passed away.
よるの あいだに しんだんだ。
He died during the night.
ぼくたちは、エルフを にわに うめた。
We buried Elf in the yard.
みんな ないて、かたを だきあった。
Everyone cried and hugged each other.
にいさんや いもうとも、エルフが すきだった。
My brother and sister loved Elf.
でも、すきって いって やらなかった。
But they never told him.
ぼくだって、かなしくて たまらなかったけど、いくらか 気もちが らくだった。
I was heartbroken, but I felt a bit better.
だって、まいばん エルフに、「ずうっと、大すきだよ。」って、いって やって いたからね。
Because every night, I told Elf, "I will always love you."
となりの 子が、子犬を くれると いった。
A neighbor offered to give me a puppy.
もらっても、エルフは 気に しないって わかって いたけど、ぼくは、いらないって いった。
I knew Elf wouldn't mind, but I said no.
かわりに、ぼくが、エルフの バスケットを あげた。
Instead, I gave the neighbor Elf’s basket.
ぼくより、その 子の ほうが、バスケット いるもんね。
The neighbor needed it more than I did.
いつか、ぼくも、ほかの 犬を かうだろうし、子ねこや きんぎょも かうだろう。
One day, I will have another dog, maybe a kitten or a goldfish too.
なにを かっても、まいばん、きっと いって やるんだ。
And whatever pet I have, every night, I will tell them,
「ずうっと、ずっと、大すきだよ。」って。
"Always and forever, I love you."
